[Bug 574910] Re: High load averages on Lucid while idling

2011-08-24 Thread flaccid
Which actual AKI is this bug against and is it occurring with the latest images?
Maybe it doesn't exist anymore in the latest with pvgrub AKI and AMI?
Does LTS mean anything here?

[Bug 48734] Re: Home permissions too open

2010-10-27 Thread flaccid
@emarkay
Thats explained above if you read the history.
The simple answer is yes, any system user can read anything in /home/*

I did notice that what people are saying is correct... it is like this with
many other distros and OS.
But, imho, this shouldn't mean that Ubuntu does the same.

Do we want to be a leader or a follower?
Ubuntu - Linux for human beings.
Well, humans like privacy.

I also confirm the new kernels fix the bug. Thanks Scott!
Users keep in mind, that for existing images, you'll need to install the
corresponding kernel modules (a reboot will usually kernel panic if they do not

[Bug 48734] Re: Home permissions too open

2010-08-20 Thread flaccid
After some of the comments I did look at some other *nix OS and distros
and observed that quite a few do have open home directories too by
default. There are however quite a few that apply protection.

It is just a question of which category Ubuntu wants to be in. At this
point, it looks like the former which is a shame.

Microsoft Windows even protects user's files by default. IMHO, if we
want to remain mediocre and not add protection, then we could at least
provide an informative dialog in the installer or create user GUI to
advise that the created user has a world readable home.

No opt-in to 'sharing' as its been called is plain ridiculous. With
servers, sysadmins are responsible in this area, but this is Ubuntu -
linux for human beings, on the desktop.

Thats not what I said at all. If you know how the load average is calculated,
then you can look at what it is calculated from and then troubleshoot why the
values are high. Work out the source of the bad performance. Do we actually
know what this is yet?

Has anyone looked at Ubuntu's code where the actual load average is calculated?
If so where is this? Perhaps we should start from there, see

Testing is great, but we have already verified the incorrect averages.

LTS only really applies to people that pay Canonical for support i.e. they only
support LTS.
Ubuntu also does not release bug fixes in package updates during a release.
This basically means that LTS is worthless to the community and quite a big
misnomer.

[Bug 48734] Re: Home permissions too open

2010-03-11 Thread flaccid
@Mark Shuttleworth

I don't know where to start with your flaws, but I'll at least flag a
few + relevant points.

1. A majority != all
2. The wiki confirms that this is a security bug
3. People store their mail in the home directory (this is only 1 example). You
can then own the user or get the information you need etc. Identity theft is
huge and this is only one of the consequences
4. Linux for human beings? We like privacy. Sharing with friends or relatives..
Believe it or not, most friends and relatives like to keep their personal
information private, I'm sure you do too
5. You say the word 'assume'. Why would you ever assume trust? Security
Engineers are paid to prevent such assumptions
6. Sure you can circumvent via USB boot, but in Ubuntu you can use an encrypted
FS or encrypt folders to negate this if you want to
7. Ubuntu is being used in Universities, schools, organisations etc. Wasn't
this an objective of Ubuntu - to gain market share/use/awareness in any
environment? Are you really ignorant to think that Ubuntu is only being used at
home?
8. Real unix/posix operating systems don't make home dirs public. A lot of
admins won't even think about checking the perms as a result. We get totally
shocked when we first find this out, and obviously a lot have already been
bitten.

One only has to look at competitors such as OS X to see that sharing
features/frontends have been placed in the Desktop Environment to allow users
to easily share files within sub-folders of their home.
You may be suprised, but I have never heard anyone complain that this is hard
for an inexperience user to do.

[Bug 48734] Re: Home permissions too open

2009-08-20 Thread flaccid
@Carroarmato0
Samba server in Ubuntu is not installed or enabled by default. This is also
networking sharing, not simple local sharing via UNIX perms. Although Ubuntu
lacks a real implementation of Samba that is a transparent config to the user,
a network sharing filesystem is not really applicable here. A frontend that
allows a user to share a folder in their homedir that is initially forbidden,
is really what we need; its already there in the DEs as I mentioned, but not
transparent to the user.

It is the responsibility of the DE and/or distro to provide a facility
for a newbie-level user to easily allow sharing of a private folder.

[Bug 48734] Re: Home permissions too open

2009-08-19 Thread flaccid
Whatever solution is decided upon, as long as home dirs via adduser etc. are
NOT world readable then its ok.
We should also be educating users instead of getting them into bad habits such
as sharing home directories - you won't see any decent administrator set this
up on a LAN's LDAP or similar.

The basic concept is this: A user has a password, which suggests that a
user's resources are protected by this password. Currently this is not
the case due to the wrong mentality and current policy in Ubuntu.

I've pointed out to dozens of users that 'hey did you know anyone can
read your home folder?'. They are inheritantly shocked when they check
my accusation, and a lot reply with 'Gee, Windows is even more secure
than this'.

So whats next? IMHO, we should be looking at how other operating systems
current share files between local users - check OS X, MS Windows, other
distros/*nix etc. Personally I think one of the management options is
the DE to provide a tool to share a folder - and hey lets not forget
that in Gnome and KDE users can already click a folder and goto its
permission's and easily change who can read it. Ideally I think that
that every user should know the basics to UNIX/Posix FS permissions
also.

Oh and there are many other out of the box style Linux distros out there as

Also the good old 'but its free' argument is always bogus and classically used

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-12-30 Thread flaccid
@Robert Bernecky

1, Complaining to AMD/ATI tends to do nothing but frustrate people due to the
lack of any response on their part
2. ATI *did* release open specification for its video driver, or at least the
parts they could or would due to licensing and other IP gripes. I guess it
enabled better development of the open-source Xorg driver, but has only
relinquished their responsibility with fglrx.
3. fglrx does not support XrandR so dual head needs to be done via Xinerama or
similar eg. http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/X.Org/Dual_Monitors/ATI
4. switch user and dual display should work Ok under the open-source ati or
radeon driver.
5. In this case you can't blame Linux, but you can blame AMD for lack of
support and maintainence of the driver and Ubuntu for its lack of action - Its
still not proven which one is exactly at fault and why; but it do looks like
the ATI driver is doing something non-standard

Unfortunately none of this gets us closer to fixing this bug.

Considering how hard it is to get the other fixes committed as a

assume this would be harder to get committed. Mathias suggested a great

I disagree and I don't think you can speak for others like that.
Considering the Linux kernel and Samba itself are shared between
hundreds of Linux distributions and that Samba is basically the same (in
this context) on other operating systems such as FreeBSD etc., it is
clear that its the responsibility of the distribution especially
considering scripts existed already and were simply executed at the
wrong stage of the shutdown sequence.

'Who' wants to take responsibility is kind of irrelevant here
considering fixes are available and we are only asking for 1 of these to
be committed as opposed to 'someone take the blame will you'.

to commit fixes such as Canonical sponsors.
I gave up on Ubuntu's management a long time ago. Where are the chiefs?

[Bug 298601] [NEW] Firefox cannot start: Cannot mix incompatible Qt libraries

2008-11-15 Thread flaccid
Public bug reported:

Trying to start Firefox in Kubuntu Intrepid returns:

Bug is critical as Firefox doesn't work in the current Kubuntu. Does
anybody test these things before its released?

[Bug 211631] Re: CIFS/SMBFS shares not unmounted before network is shut down

2008-10-31 Thread flaccid
Yeah I would have to say that response with things in Ubuntu is pathetic.
A lot of the time its hard to get something fixed for the next release let
alone in the current release where it should be fixed.
Its the good old 'have to upgrade to the next release to fix this problem, and
then i get fresh new problems in the next release' (or continue to wait for a
bug to be fixed and then it gets expired!).

Considering the people copied on bugs like this, its like they don't
read their email..

So will somebody with authority like in Canonical get off their behind
and sponsor one of the fixes that has been available for a very long
time.

All I can say at this stage is that i'm waiting till final release on 30th
October 2008 before I install Intrepid.
If I install it and get this, i'll be very unhappy. At that time, I will
probably ask myself why I upgraded, to which I will answer because I get bug
fixes not in Hardy. Its the usual Ubuntu upgrade to get rid of problems only to
inherit new ones. This occurs every Ubuntu release.

Although some people will appreciate the work around it doesn't solve anything
and makes you use the open souce ati driver to which most people will not like
as they enabled the restricted driver for a reason.
Another workaround that works very well is using Windows or going and buying a
Mac :)

I guess there is simply nothing Ubuntu can do about a 3rd party restricted
closed driver.
Should we submit a bug report to the unofficial http://ati.cchtml.com/ and
close this one as the problem is upstream?

[Bug 210303] Re: [hardy] kaffeine loops on Codec package is already installed

2008-09-17 Thread flaccid
@TWO

A few things to help you understand better:

* There was some official movement and at least 2 people told officials who did
nothing
* 5 months is beyond patience especially when a fix was available months ago
and simply needed to be committed. Response times by projects such as Mozilla's
Firefox are usually days or weeks not months for example
* No we are not all capable. Kubuntu is for end users as well. Ubuntu uses the
term 'Linux for human beings'. Most of the other media players don't support
smb and are not KDE based, but the point here is that newbies/non-technical
people/windows users don't know how to install software nor will think they
should have to, and they are right!
* There is a fix, we are just having problems with someone committing it
despite how many people have this authority on this thread
* As you can see people are not giving up, nor walking away, instead they are
complaining because of lack of action. This is normal human behaviour and
pressuring is one way to get movement in this world.

[Bug 210303] Re: [hardy] kaffeine loops on Codec package is already installed

2008-09-16 Thread flaccid
@Jakarta yeah I agree. Ubuntu is very political imo and Kubuntu does not
get the attention it requires nor the respect. I also recall
highlighting this bug out to some 'leaders' of Kubuntu months ago like
at least one other person did on this bug, but no response.

Jonathan Riddell is subscribed to this bug and hasn't done anything
although Sergey had notified him in May with a fix (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kaffeine/+bug/210303/comments/46
).

People should get real and practical and just go to OpenSUSE, Gentoo or
PC-BSD because this makes Kubuntu worse than MS Windows - at least its
media player works.

[Bug 270721] [NEW] No presentation on input form elements in Firefox 3/KDE 3

2008-09-15 Thread flaccid
Public bug reported:

Input form elements (and other form elements) do not display any visual
presentation like a border (they do function correctly).
This is probably to do with the qt/gtk engine and/or theming.

[Bug 247376] Re: undefined symbols when trying to load fglrx

2008-08-06 Thread flaccid
Can somebody hassle AMD/ATI and get them to fix their driver?
Its 2008, not 1994. I'm assuming they open-sourced their driver to relinquish
responsibility in maintainence and support.
Using the 'ati' driver is not going to cut it for most users, particularly
older Radeon users. And I certainly don't think users should have to buy new
hardware to get decent video on *nix (in general).

I have fglrx working without this bug however on:
Linux lister 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux
ii fglrx-control 1:8-3+2.6.24.13-19.44
Control panel for the ATI graphics accelerat
ii xorg-driver-fglrx 1:7.1.0-8-3+2.6.24.14-20.46
Video driver for ATI graphics accelerators

With all the people who have reported this bug, who/what compiled the
module and was it compiled against a matching kernel etc.?

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-07-31 Thread flaccid
Can somebody please advise which package and repos this fix is in for Hardy?
I have no desire to upgrade to Intrepid (unreleased) to get a major bug fix.

I'm using:

ii xorg 1:7.3+10ubuntu10.2
ii xorg-driver-fglrx 1:7.1.0-8-3+2.6.24.14-20.46

on Linux lister 2.6.24-19-generic #1 SMP Wed Jun 18 14:43:41 UTC 2008
i686 GNU/Linux

I still have hard crashes in situations like going to a tty while an
OpenGL game is running then going back to the X tty and it hard crashes
or when restart KDM after logout.

Same actual information on the bug fix and where it was applied etc. is always
useful for users to re-test and confirm etc.
I dislike saying a fix is available but not specifying exactly where (this
wastes more time etc.).

[Bug 242145] [NEW] kpersonalizer should have a menu entry for itself in Settings - Desktop Settings Wizard

2008-06-22 Thread flaccid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kpersonalizer

In kpersonalizer on the last screen, it says After closing this
dialogue you can always restart this Wizard by choosing the entry
Desktop Settings Wizard from the Settings menu.

On a fresh/no kde profile, this welcome process will popup.

It appears to be a Kubuntu modification to remove this menu entry. In
this case the above notice should be removed from kpersonalizer for
quality purposes.

Question might then be asked: What to do when KDE vanilla references entities
that Kubuntu removes and the artifacts are left.
The more that Kubuntu removes/modifies, the possibility of more of these
problems arising.

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-05-09 Thread flaccid
Thanks Martin.

I applied the update, the crash occured on first logout (because no reboot yet).
After reboot, logged out successfully and tested this a few times, tested OK -
logouts were pretty speedy as well.

However, when I tested restarting KDM, the crash behaviour still occurs.
So I report successful logouts but crashes on sudo /etc/init.d/kdm-kde4 or
selecting Restart X Server from KDM itself.

Some details on my current system:

I can confirm this also.

When I click on the menu dialog it renders the wallpaper for that area after
the dialog hides so its like the wallpaper is there somewhere behind that or
something.
I tried to play around with kdm configuration of wallaper and themes and could
not get any background to display.

[Bug 118605] Re: [fglrx] freezes upon Logout or Switch user [patch]

2008-05-06 Thread flaccid
I have had friends with Nvidia and this problem as well - just to
advise.

What is the status of this bug now?
How can I apply the proposed patch?

I would also like to note that bugs like this are very bad. Its amazing that
such a severe bug exists in the world's most popular linux distro.
It seems every ubuntu release has at least a few major bugs like this -
upgrading to the new version may get rid of some bugs but you get the new ones
for free as well.
My kingdom for stability!

[Bug 223445] [NEW] Hard crash on logout with Hardy (ATI restricted driver)

2008-04-27 Thread flaccid
Public bug reported:

When logging out a hard crash occurrs - usually black screen, cannot
access ttys or even ctrl+alt+bkspc.

It appears to only occur with the restricted driver and has been
reported by at least 2 other people in #kubuntu/freenode.

This did not occur for me on Gutsy. I have an ATI Radeon 9600 Mobility.

Nothing in logs - likely ATI's fault, but cannot confirm.

[Bug 222335] [NEW] k3b runs under root after prompt from inserting cd

2008-04-25 Thread flaccid
Public bug reported:

I insert a CD and i select burn data cd from the prompt - which I think
is from HAL.

It then somehow runs k3b under root and ask to which i get:

Running K3b as root user
It is not recommended to run K3b under the root user account. This introduces
unnecessary security risks.
Solution: Run K3b from a proper user account and setup the device and external
tool permissions appropriately.

[Bug 130562] Package ttf-malayalam-fonts no longer includes malayalam.ttf

2007-08-05 Thread flaccid
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ttf-malayalam-fonts

I have read in another bug that this particular file/font was being removed.
If that is the case, then I don't know why. I've been using malayalam.ttf for a
long time now, its not buggy to me.
I upgraded to Gutsy to test it out and my favourite font has been removed. The
others in this package don't seem to look the same, so as a workaround i've
copied the Feisty malayalam.ttf in the dir.

If this font really needs to be removed, can you advise the replacement
that looks as much close as possible, so I can test?

Re: [Bug 41339] Re: Mythtv won't install

2007-04-11 Thread flaccid
Will the user be told they have to reconfigure if there is a root
password, or will they have to go searching around for help?
Can it just run dpkg-reconfigure mythv-database if there is a root pass?

The latest feisty packages now assume no root password during

install, but just require reconfiguration to setup that password.
 sudo dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-database
 will handle this

Wayne, I had mysql-server preinstalled, preconfigured and it doesn't make a
difference.

[Bug 45837] Re: Focus Follows Mouse doesn't set focus to Desktop

2007-01-04 Thread flaccid
I am not sure if this is related, but most likely.

When I open a file externally to open in an existing session for eg. txt file
into open kate instance, it doesn't set focus and bring the window up.
Using Focus Follows Mouse doesn't change to the desired behaviour and when
selecting Focus under mouse, the focus works, however the window list when
doing alt+tab switching goes away despite being checked (note selecting focus
under mouse greys out this option).

So basically playing around with the Window Behaviour to get the window list
and set focus is not achievable due to the bug.
This is on dapper.
