[Bug 503393] Re: xserver freeze after a few reboots

2010-06-02 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I installed Lucid on the same machine and have had a couple of X server
freezes - I move the mouse pointer around and suddenly everything goes
into a complete freeze.

Don't want to switch to vesa mode driver if I can help it mainly because
I normally attach another (bigger) display to the laptop when I am
working (which I can't do in vesa mode).

Re: [Bug 542603] Re: [RS480] Dual Monitor Blanks Out Suddenly

2010-06-02 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I have installed Lucid on the system and the display freezes suddenly in
the middle of a mouse or keyboard movement. I have posted the relevant
information on the launchpad site, as suggested by you.

I think the problem is due to acceleration because:

1. Once when the system froze, I was in the middle of a very rapid
scroll within firefox using the PgUp key on the keypad

2. the other time it was when I was rapidly moving the mouse.

[Bug 542603] [NEW] Dual Monitor Blanks Out Suddenly

2010-03-20 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I have two days ago attached an external TFT monitor to my HP Compaq
nx6115 notebook. The monitor is Viewsonic VA1912. I set up dual displays
using System-Preferences-Display as a mirror.

I have noticed that the external viewsonic monitor suddenly goes blank
and the display stops working. A message pops up saying No signal. The
notebook display however, is working fine.

On the two occassions that this has happened, I was using the mouse. In
the first instance, some link in Firefox and in the recent incident, a
mail header in thunderbird.

as Xorg.0.log.old shows there seems to have been some problem with X
(ddxSigGiveup) which made the second monitor go blank.

it is related to mouse movements. Something happens to X at certain
points when the mouse is moving.

By the way, I have an external USB mouse attached to my notebook

able to get work done. But obviously, this is not the best of solutions.
So hoping that the bug is fixed

[Bug 510544] [NEW] Cups duplex printing possible through ipp but not through samba

2010-01-21 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

I have a perculiar problem. I have a small file/print Ubuntu server
running jaunty (9.04) with an HP Laserjet 1320 printer attached with a
built-in duplex unit. The printer is shared via samba (smb://...). If
the client uses the smb:// URI to print to this printer, duplex printing
does not work. If I define the queue as an ipp:// one it works. Can't
figure this out.

Clients are Ubuntu Karmic desktops. With Jaunty on the desktops, this
issue did not arise.

[Bug 503393] Re: xserver freeze after a few reboots

2010-01-12 Thread pramathesh ambasta
To report further, the system worked well for a few days and froze once
again. After that it performed without a hitch for a few more days but
today, while in the process of selecting applications for installation
in Synaptic, it froze and the screen turned to black and white stripes.

Again, the system turned unresponsive and could not even be connected to
from another computer via ssh.

Nothing in the logs as far as I can see which seems to capture this.

[Bug 370505] Re: Call to undefined function get_gosa_version()

2010-01-09 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I would like to confirm that this exists in Ubuntu 9.10 too. After
applying the fixes posted by Nathan Eriksmoen I got this:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function print_array() in
/usr/share/gosa/include/class_dhcpPlugin.inc on line 206

Is there any solution to this?

Grateful for help

[Bug 503393] [NEW] xserver freeze after a few reboots

2010-01-05 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This is new to Karmic. I have not had this problem before. I first tried
to go into a virtual console using Alt+F1 etc. The system froze. It
could not be contacted by another machine on the network. I reformatted
twice and performed a clean install. After a few successful boots, X
server would stop loading. The screen would go blank and the system
would freeze leaving no option but to do a hard reboot. I was able to do
a startx from a recovery console (by getting into it using the shift key
during the bootloader stage). The attached Xorg.0.log.old captures the
problem when the X server gives up.

After some attempts, it may randomly decide to load up again. No reason
that I can make out

I have experienced some screen freezes in jaunty (32 bit *not* 64-bit).
I have never experienced this with Hardy *ever*, in which I installed
the proprietary fglrx drivers.

But Karmic has been unstable in this respect from Day 1. I have no
choice but to go back to jaunty, or look for another distribution or
hope that someone advises me how to get around this, since work is
severely affected.

I am also attaching a gdm log of today just in case it helps.

[Bug 459770] [NEW] network drives not listed in thunderbird file attach dialog

2009-10-24 Thread pramathesh ambasta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: thunderbird

I use Thunderbird 3.0.14 for my email. If I want to attach a file which
is on a network (windows) drive on another computer, the file attachment
dialog in thunderbird does not show the drive. I have to go to the
location bar and manually type {home}/.gvfs to show the drive. This
happens even if the gnome Places menu is showing the network drive and
so are other apps (like OpenOffice). This happens despite thunderbird-
gnome-support being installed.

Cannot figure out why and as far as I can remember previous versions on
Ubuntu/Thunderbird did not have this problem.

This does not seem to have been reported on bug #263441, but for the
record, it seems to have been fixed in the next upstream version of
KompoZer, version 0.8a2 (20081229). The Ubuntu package should be
updated to reflect the fixed version.

I got it by adding the PPA for the maintainer to my
 /etc/apt/sources.list (go to https://launchpad.net/~giuseppe-
 iuculano/+archive/ppa for the information).

[Bug 309748] Re: ubiquity crash, no initrd.img -- 8.10 desktop

2009-04-23 Thread pramathesh ambasta
I wish to confirm the above. Some weeks ago I was trying to install 8.10
from the amd64 dvd iso (which was checked against the md5sum) on my HP
Compaq nx6115 notebook (AMD Turion based). At the last stage of install,
the installation would abort with an error on each attempt. The notebook
already has winxp and Hardy installed on other partitions. 8.10 would
have been the 3rd OS.

I tried also not installing the boot loader and configured the menu.lst
file in the Hardy boot partition to include the Intrepid OS. At boot
time, Grub would show Error 15 (file not found). I realized that the
root partition of the Intrepid install had symbolic link called
initrd.img which was broken in that the file it pointed to had not been
installed at all.

I gave up after these attempts until I came across this post yesterday.
I tried ubiquity with the --debug and --no-migration-assistant flag and
the install worked. It installed its boot loader which I changed to
include the Hardy partition as well. Without these options, ubiquity
crashed.

Hope that this helps sort out this issue and thanks in advance
