There are other desktop environments you can try out as well. I've been
using KDE on my 11.10 install & quiet happy with it.

If you are looking for a more gnome-ish experience, then there is Cinnamon
as well which you can easily install & try.

Hi all,

I would like to join the discussion by asking Kush , why not unity.?
Unity is the best alternative to windows and Mac , moreover a variety
of app can be developed for unity , and the new version of 12.04 is
customisable to gnome . Yes i do agree that it is a lot more buggy and
many drivers dont work . Unity is the future of ubuntu..

Thanks Pratik and Deepak for your replies.

I shall try the gnome shell option again --there was an option at
installation time for gnome shell or unity and i had opted to go for
the default since i figured that those problems would have been
debugged in the 11.04/11.10 series.

I have both the 10.04 and 12.04 on 2 different laptops and 10.04 works
much faster on the earlier laptop.

Cheers,

Yes it is possible. Simply install gnome-shell.
$ sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

Doing so, you will have an option to choose between Unity and GNOME at the
login screen itself by clicking on the gear.

I kind of disagree with you on this point. If no changes are made, then
there will be no development. While features like HUD and others have been
annoying to some, they are also been liked by many. So its not fair to say
why such changes are made. Obviously, some user feedback must have prompted
Canonical to make these drastic changes to the UI.

Hi,

It seems that your are more interested in gnome shell instead of unity. For
this you can prefer Ubuntu with gnome shell .

[ubuntu-in] 12.04 vs 10.04

2012-12-17 Thread K Singh
Hi all,

I have been using ubuntu since version 6 but of late am becoming
disillusioned with ubuntu. Version 11.04 and 11.10 were buggy and
12.04 with the unity interface/windows mgt system is not as fast as
gnome was. Plus in 12.04 it is not as easy to customise a lot of
things which were easy to do with earlier versions through the
commandline or the gui. It seems that the development of ubuntu is
being hijacked by vested interests from the commercial
competition--since the user no longer has the control over the OS like
they had in previous versions and which was a hallmark of linux.

It is also not easy to change the appearance of the screen to the
earlier one in 10.04. 10.04 had a lot of options to change the
appearance which 12.04 does not have.

Is it possible to revert to the old gnome in 12.04 /12.10 also?

I don't understand why they have to keep making changes to the
appearance or the user interface with each succeeding version when the
old interface was working so well.

It was a pain to install the driver for my hp multifunction printer
the mfp m1136 in 12.04 as compared to 10.04. After using the printer a
few times in 12.04, the driver crashed in such a way that the printer
can no longer be used/re-installed now without a full reinstall of
ubuntu.

Thats been my user experience--i haven't tried to install 12.10 and
only wish that 10.04 is extended indefinitely or a better LONG term
version comes out which does not have fancy stuff but just improves
the core engine or the kernel without compromising quality and
security.
