Re: [ubuntu-in] 64-bit - Not recommended for daily desktop usage, (and problems in i5 processor)
Hi was starting to download 64 bit at http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download then saw this message along side the button to check for which version to download 64-bit - Not recommended for daily desktop usage so why is 64 bit not recommended for daily usage ?? ** An aquaintance recently installed 64 bit on an i 5 processor machine with the following kernel 2.6.32-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 05:14:15 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux and is experiencing strange system freezes - the system just locks up - nothing works not even Ctrl+alt+backspace and has to power off to get the machine back to boot and then it gets stuck in checking disk and after a long long while it gets to login screen ** look forward to advise ram I have switched over to from 32 bit to 64 bit since the launch of Maverick Meerkat. So far have not faced any major issues. Only problem which I faced was that google earth does not run on 64 bit. Probably the issue is of RAM, one should have at least 3-4 GB RAM to run 64 bit systems. It is worth a try if you have the hardware. I have a Dell Vostro laptop with 3 GB RAM. regards Kartik -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Google earth runs fine, as does everything else. am Using the 64 bit Ubuntu OS. It has an NVidia Card which is not yet running of the propreitory driver, so just installing that to see if it will resolve the problem. ram -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

The problem is some programs just dont run with 64bit system. I could not the 32bit internet connecting binary from my 64bit lucid install. Hence had to fall back on 32 bit. Also there are many programs just not available in 64 bit. - brian On Aug 18, 2010 10:39 AM, Jkhatri khatri.ja...@gmail.com wrote: On Tuesday 17 August 2010 10:34 PM, Narendra Diwate wrote: On Tue, Aug 17, 2010 at 22:21, S You have to install 32bit library If you have 64bit supported hardware then you should ( again should ) go with 64bit OSs I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Fedora 13 dual-boot ( both 64bit ) and runs fine on my Dell Inspiron 1564 core i5 processor, 4Gb DDR RAM , 1GB ATI Graphics cared Warm regards -- Jatin Khatri) Web www.khatrijatin.co.nr www.fedoraproject.org/wiki/Jatin Phone (+91) 98250 20393 Save Paper, Save Environment.** *(Plant at least one tree in your life and nurture it !!!)* -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in

Its as stable as any OS can be, 32 bit or 64 bit. As for the msg on Ubuntu site there is a whole lot of discussion going on on Ubuntu forums. I personally believe, the msg is extremely misleading and does not clarify what or why. As for your friends issues, is it a dual boot - does he have similar issues with the other OS. If not is the harddisk good, i.e bad sectors, old age etc. I had similar issue with my system very recently and even posted a query on this list, but no one responded. However i diagnosed the problem to a loosened RAM card and now the system is as good as ever. Ask him also to rum memtest on his RAM after checking for proper fit in the slot. If its a laptop then, theres a lot more to consider. -- ubuntu-in mailing list ubuntu-in@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-in
Re: [ubuntu-in] 64-bit - Not recommended for daily desktop usage (and problems in i5 processor)
Hi Ram, On Tue, Aug 17, 2010 at 2:55 AM, Ramnarayan.K ramnaraya...@gmail.com wrote: Hi was starting to download 64 bit at http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download then saw this message along side the button to check for which version to download 64-bit - Not recommended for daily desktop usage so why is 64 bit not recommended for daily usage ?? I think there are some open issues related to specific apps, java, flash etc. This is the reason for the warning. Having said that, I have 64 bit Ubuntu installed on 1 Desktop and 1 Laptop, both new, and haven't faced any blocking issues.. Java, Flash etc work fine (probably needed to do some install of non-default packages - for example, Java version shipped with Ubuntu is currently the icedtea package, which has issues with some web sites). Workaround is to remove this and install Sun java. ** An aquaintance recently installed 64 bit on an i 5 processor machine with the following kernel 2.6.32-24-generic #39-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jul 28 05:14:15 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux and is experiencing strange system freezes - the system just locks up - nothing works not even Ctrl+alt+backspace and has to power off to get the machine back to boot and then it gets stuck in checking disk and after a long long while it gets to login screen I do see some random freezes once in a while on the laptop which is an i7. Not sure of the reason, probably compiz. But it is not frequent enough to be frustating, like BSOD :) Let me know if you need any further specifics Thanks !
