Pidgin works properly, no need to try Empathy. Just follow my previous
reply. It should work for you.

When you create new account in "Basic Tab" choose
Protocol : XMPP
Username : your_username
Domain: gmail.com
You can leave Resource and Password fields blank

Now in Advanced Tab
XMPP Options
check "Require SSL/TLS"
uncheck "Force old (port 5223) SSL"
check "Allow plain text auth"
Connect Port: 5222
Connect Server: talk.google.com

You can leave other fields blank.
If you are not using proxy, then leave proxy settings unchanged.

We all are using pidgin with our gmail accounts and without any trouble.
What is the error you're getting when you try? Without you telling us
the error, all cries for help are pretty useless.

The following setup works for me

Add Account
Protocol -> Gtalk
Username: your gmail username
Domain: gmail.com
Resource: Home
Password: your password
Check "Remember password"

on Advanced tab
Uncheck all three checkboxes (Require SSL/TLS, Force Old SSL, Allow
Plaintext)
Connect port: 5222
