I'm sorry that I'm human Sarah and that I show emotion when something I
did to contribute is shunned because I don't meet all the guidelines of
professionalism.

Professionalism to me is nothing more than a word that means remain
completely politically correct, show no emotion and under no circumstances
must you act human.

Well I'm human and I have emotions and I have opinions and I have a heart
which is the very reason I set up this site to begin with.. Ubuntu was the
first Linux distribution that honestly gave me complete freedom from MS
and Apple.

To be honest after these discussions about how terrible I am for building
this site I am very depressed and very sad. Especially the comments from
you Sarah since I see the ubuntu.com as your email.. Sorry I'm just a guy
and not a fortune 500 executive. I was under the impression Ubuntu was for
ALL humans which includes opinions, feelings, emotions, flaws and heart.
Of course then again I may be wrong.

Question: Is Linux Trovald the most professional politically correct
person in the big game? No way... Do we all love what he did/does for us?
Of course... If it wasn't for that unprofessional person you wouldn't not
have the ubuntu.com as part of your email address.

Thanks for making me feel miserable over something I did for Ubuntu,
Linux, the community and as a hobby for myself.

I will also add I'm not abandoning the site I will continue to develop it,
advertise it and move forward even if no one ever uses it because I
believe in the idea and if only one person buys a computer from it and
learns linux then I contributed something.

If the support team behaves in an unprofessional manner like this, would
you really entrust large amounts of money (hundreds of dollars) to them
for computers? Do you have the confidence that you would get the gear

Michael this is my last attempt trying to get you to understand that I'm
not in it for money. Its a hobby/service and all advertisements on the
site are strickly promotional (exchanges)... There isn't one thing on the
site making me anything... You must be a business man since that is the
only thing you see..

You still believe that "I" am selling these computers... I'm not... Anyone
can, thats the point...

I'm sorry that I created something for everyone to benefit from and not
only help "spread the word" about linux but actually help get Ubuntu/Linux
in peoples homes. It also helps others make some extra cash who have a
talent and find pleasure in setting up machines with linux.

Lets see, I'm helping spread opensource, I'm spreading the word about
ubuntu, I'm giving everyone a venue to buy a linux computer, I'm giving
everyone a place to sell/showcase their work... and I'm doing it all for
free... If thats not in the spirit of opensource then I'm not sure what
is.

And don't give me that but. you plan to make money someday off the
site.. Is linux free? Yes. Does linux make money? Of course it does!

Linux, opensource, GPL does not mean "You must make no money!" Its about
freedom not just about free (non profit).

If I ever decide to make some money off of Buntfu it will be through paid
advertising not fees or commissions from users.

2008-03-11 Thread Michael Ramm
Ronnie,

You certainly are correct in your statement that many sites are breaking
Canonical's trademark. My LoCo is doing it with our blog at
http://alabamaubuntu.org. BUT there is a big difference between your site
and my site.

I am NOT trying to make money off of the site. I am, in fact, sticking to
the community spirit of Ubuntu and spreading the message. If Canonical came
to me and asked (or told) me to change the name, then I would. I certainly
would not take it to an official Ubuntu channel and degrade the members
because of the actions that Canonical took against me.

I wish you well in your endeavors, but I will not use your service because
of the actions that you have brought to this list. Like Jeremy said, had you
taken a different tact, you could have avoided a lot of misunderstanding and
probably not made such a bad name for yourself or your business.

I think you caught heat because you didn't do earlier what you did in
this e-mail. To explain what your thoughts were and what the concepts
were behind what you are doing. I think what you have done now will
allow people to give intelligent suggestions and maybe help you in what
you are trying to accomplish. Anyway, my two cents...

I take you at your word, but nonetheless it certainly confused me,
even though it was not your intention. From a marketing point of
view, such confusion is disastrous and your excellent idea can surely
be taken forward with a second think about a look and feel which

It was clear to me that it was ubuntu focussed. It was not clear where
it fitted in commercially and its credible motives.
Ironically, the better job you do to make it look ubuntu-ish, then the
more suspicion you might get about your motives, whatever you state,
because of the intuitive look alike.

I kept it similar to ubuntu not because of trying to steal or confuse but

I did this because I believe in ubuntu, I also believe if new users are

There are a massive amount of sites on the internet that break Ubuntu's
trademark policy just with their domain names... no site can have ubuntu

2008-03-11 Thread Dan Trevino
Michael has a very good point.

Ronnie, I think buntfu is a good idea, maybe just needs some
refinement. Any project which tries to involve a community like this
is gonna require some thick skin and perseverance.

I am personally disgusted by some of the fees you pay to the larger
commercial sites (ebay, amazon, etc), and while some may prefer
established vendors, at least for personal use, I'd rather buy from
someone in our community (providing prices arent out of whack). To
each his own.

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Introducing a community based PC vendor. (Mike Feravolo)

2008-03-11 Thread Michael Ramm
THAT sure is one way NOT to get business from a segment of the population. I
will definitely not steer anyone to the Buntfu site for computer purchases.
The defensive tone of your response to some warranted criticism is really an
unacceptable business practice in my book. The Ubuntu is a tight knit
community (I know that you know this). We are just worried about the image
of Ubuntu because it is such a struggle to get people to even try
non-Microsoft stuff in this day.

Your proper response should have been to outline you philosophy and
reasoning for offering what you do. Systems preloaded with linux are still
pretty hard to come by, but are increasing. I think that your site had
potential, but I will not find out any further because of the derogatory
tone of your comments to this list. Also remember, flattery is one thing,
trademark infringement is a totally different beast.

There are so many ways to contribute to the Ubuntu community. I just one guy
also who does not program, is not a linux god, and does not have deep
pockets. There are many teams (like this marketing team) that need folks to
help out with their mission. Get involved in a LoCo team in your area. Just
helping people on the forums is great! That is the real beauty of the Ubuntu
Community, it is open to all...linux n00b (like me) all the way to the
programmers of the OS.
