Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Fwd: "I am Ubuntu"
hey guys upon reading your mail... well marketing mail my group too is in aid for promoting free gnu/linux systems in Malta its call linuxmalta.tk i have a videos page where i add my Ubuntu found ads from youtube.com... i wont mind getting the english/maltese/italion/arabic version of i'm ubuntu in Maltese"Jien ubuntu" in a sentence it could come Jien/a Warren u Jien UBUNTU - English trans... I'm Warren and I'm Ubuntu... jes i know jien is for male and jien is for female meaning I... we are a 35 linux mostly ubuntu/kubuntu users so why not share out ideas and produce it with each other and and stick it under the gnu license? my work is always under copyright like u send it out exactly how i done it under my name but you sent it under urs then thats breaching of copyright... but just change the pace/volume or something then its yours... i think thats fair? Since its a free world I could not resist myself from expressing my point of view. I'm a Marketing Major student (though have not graduated yet, expecting this Summer). Thus I can say I know a bit about presenting a product to the audience. From my point of view Hi I'm mac & I'm Pc ad from apple & ms was nice, that's a good marketing strategy to represent themselves. However we can not always follow what the market leaders are doing at the moment. Because Ubuntu Linux is still in the growth stage while MS & Apple have developed both their product & market to Matured state. Both Apple & MS have presented their products to their respective markets for years creating brand (product) awareness among the mass. We can put this idea in this way, 9 out of 10 people knows what is Windows XP/Vista & What is Mac Leopard. While at the same time if we ask same people about what is Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex, this rate will go down perhaps to 2-3 out of 10 and in some country (like mine) it's less than 1 out of 10. (all values are assumption, but I am sure it's close to these) In this case "I am Ubuntu" campaign is just a "ME TOO" campaign. This will confuse general user even more since they are not yet aware of what is Ubuntu. Instead we should represent Ubuntu as in "I use Ubuntu" campaign like Chris Rowson suggested. May be, Hi I'm Shahriar, I'm a marketing student and I use Ubuntu everyday for educational purpose. or Hi I'm X, I'm webdesigner and I use Ubuntu everyday for developing sites for my clients. Presenting Ubuntu as what we can use it to do, User representing Ubuntu from diversified occupation. This way people will have idea what they can use Ubuntu for and whether Ubuntu is right for them. Personally I really don't think "I'm Ubuntu" will have much effect on general user.. oh this is just another parody of Mac & Windows commercial... I hope you would consider "I use Ubuntu" instead of "I'm Ubuntu" campaign Have a nice day & Happy New Year :) -- Thanking you Shahriar Volunteer, Bangladesh Linux Users Alliance http://linux.org.bd http://forum.linux.org.bd Marketing & Contents Officer, Ubuntu Bangladesh http://www.ubuntu-bd.org Endorsement: আমাদের প্রযুক্তি ফোরাম http://forum.amaderprojukti.com/ and মুক্ত.অর্গ http://mukto.org -- ubuntu-marketing mailing list ubuntu-marketing@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-marketing

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Submission for "I am Ubuntu"
If you're interested on my debate with myself about which term I felt best to use I've settled with "Helo, fy enw i yw Chris a dw i'n Ubuntu" but to be honest I'll settle with the standard English format since it promotes uniformity rather than variations. On a side note however, I've been thinking ahead beyond individual clips now. I've been thinking should we watermark the first 5 seconds or so with something like "Recorded by the Ubuntu community" and should we have something that tells us what the heck Ubuntu is? We could have a 4person box all saying hello my name is x and I am Ubuntu, then following that we can have the 4 or so people telling us points about Ubuntu and it's philosophy. "Ubuntu is a free, more secure alternative to Windows" "Ubuntu is built on the foundation of humanity to others" I'm sure that the rest of you can elaborate the wording on that, as you can tell my language skills aren't too advanced when it comes to advertising but I have a general idea of what the scenarios should be like or theories at least. I'll add more ideas when the site gets up and we might have some more participation. Hopefully we can get some forums ready soon however :). Regards, Chris. Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Submission for "I am Ubuntu"
Then again I am Chris and I am Ubuntu can portray that my name is Ubuntu too. That's the problem with using other languages, although I speak both Welsh & English I find it hard to translate between the two :|. So unless I think what would be best to convey the message in this tongue then I believe that I'll be sticking with English since I barely see any Welsh advertisements, perhaps there's a reason for that in this language in comparisson to English. In my original mail however, I've addressed some issues on advertisement/sentence structure that I think should be addressed as well as the backdrop of the scenario & style of the person speaking. Should be a nerdy geek with glasses? Or should he be hip & trendy? Could he even be a farmer, builder etc? I'll leave that part up to the professionals I guess. Again with kind regards, Chris. Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Submission for "I am Ubuntu"
In regards to my previous message, sorry any fellow Welsh speakers out there I mangled the language because I was in English 'mode'. What it should've really said now that I'm back to thinking in Welsh is something like "Helo, Chris ydw i ac Ubuntu ydw i". That is a lot shorter to say and makes more sense than what I would've previously put forward. It just sounds more normal than my previous message in my head and to other speakers. Also including helo as I forgot to introduce myself to the audience. Then again I guess that I am Chris and I am Ubuntu would've been sufficient. All non-Welsh speakers can ignore this message ;). Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Submission for "I am Ubuntu"
I have been actively thinking about how best to record a video myself for the project since Sunday. I've been thinking of what environment to set myself in when recording too. Since there are only 75,000 people that share my accent and just 2,500,000 people in my country I've been thinking that I really should represent my country-folk for Ubuntu. Recently thanks to winter, there's been some snow & frost around so I've been thinking should I set it in a snowy wonderland or should I wait until the environment is more normal for my area i.e. not as much snow? Then I've been thinking, where best to situate it. Should we have videos say in the garden, at work, at college/school, in the forest, near the river, by the rugby fields etc? Then I was thinking, should we go hip & cool like Apple, or should we have normal people in normal clothing just like Micro$oft's ad campaign? Also as recently suggested what about the wording? Should we restrict ourselves to just English as well? Should it be, Hello my name is Chris and I am Ubuntu. Or perhaps it could be "Chris ydy f'enw i a dwi'n Ubuntu"? Or perhaps Hi, I am Chris & I am a student that uses Ubuntu. Hi I am Chris, I come from Wales and I use Ubuntu. etc. We should underline what structure to use before we actually set out any further plans. Would using other languages on the other hand further enhance the Ubuntu (humanity) message? Also the ending of the video ad/collage/campaigns, what will the ending part be like? Just a simple logo & url to ubuntu.com or a further explanation or a short little message in text? Perhaps on the website you could hold a poll/vote or even try to set one up via this mailing list. Part of me is a little fearful of "following" in MS footsteps, but I really can't think of a better ad campaign myself so push on. One suggestion is at the end of some of the videos there be one of hundreds/thousands of people all saying we are ubuntu at the same time. Fill the screen to the horizon with people if possible. The other part I was thinking of is families. Our family is 100% Ubuntu and my 3 and 4 year olds use it as much or more as my wife and I. So to have a family themed we are Ubuntu or mixed in with the we are one. Lastly, maybe trying to do like the Verizon commercials showing the support that comes with the package. Not sure how to do that off the top of my head but it is an important aspect of the open source software we use. Perhaps it'd be a nice idea if some submissions could go along the line of. "I am Ubuntu and I arrest criminals..." (for example showing a policeman with his laptop) "I am Ubuntu and I predict the weather.." (for example showing someone at a university using Ubuntu to run a research project) You get the general idea... I'm just a bit worried that saying I am and I am Ubuntu might get a bit repetitive. I think that people might be more interested in what people are/do than in what that person's name is. What do you think? We should focus on just Ubuntu for now. When people learn about Ubuntu they will become more aware of the other distros simply by reading and doing searches. We really need to have a constant message and Ubuntu is the most popular and well known of all the Ubuntu "flavors". Lets focus on Ubuntu for brand awareness, and so that new people will try it and learn about it. We all know that the more people running Linux the better, why shouldn't Ubuntu be the first one they try? I'm Beth and I am Ubuntu! I think the same phrase should be used to offer consistency and the message will get to everyone interested this way. Btw, sorry for posting the previous message from a different address. It was set up as default in Gmail. I was thinking that they could also say it in English, but that would complicate things. At the end of the video a message could be used so the viewers retain the subject. 2008/12/31 Alan Pope > Hi Daniel, > > 2008/12/31 Daniel Voicu : > > Hi. Those from other parts of the world may > want to use something like this: "Hi, I'm (name) from (place), and I am > Ubuntu." > "other parts of the world"? Surely everyone is from an 'other' part of the world relative to everyone else? I'd say you choose one or the other phrase for consistency but don't make the assumption that if someone doesn't say where they are from, they're from where you are. I'll certainly submit a video or two :) Cheers, Al. -- ubuntu-marketing mailing list ubuntu-marketing@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-marketing
Re: [ubuntu-marketing] "I am Ubuntu"
Hi. I've just subscribed to the mailing list and would really love to help in promoting Ubuntu. Related to "I Am Ubuntu", what do you think if the users could say they are Ubuntu in their native language? This could promote the idea of different persons, from different countries can join under the same "banner", Ubuntu. Humanity to others.
