Hi Ronnie, I think it is a great idea and wish you all the best with it. I know how you feel; we also get sometimes negative feedback on making money from Ubuntu. But most people see it as a positive thing that pre-installed Ubuntu systems are available at the market. And as long as you go by the rules, you should not be bothered about some negative feedback. Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Introducing a community based PC vendor.
honestly Ubuntu is different because of 2 things: 1. It's community (Who ROCKS!) 2. Its aim on been viable (which means also commercially) Buntfu has both and although I may not use it, I think it is a great way to contribute to the ubuntu enviroment. Keep up your work! yes they made me change my original name which was ourbuntu. They were very enthused that I created this site but that the buntu part of my site name was on of their trademarks and that they could not grant permission since the policy clearly states they will not do so for commercial type sites.. I kept it similar to ubuntu not because of trying to steal or confuse but simply because the site is more focused on ubuntu computers rather than just general linux systems... I wanted that to be clear from the door. I did this because I believe in ubuntu, I also believe if new users are going to be looking for linux machines they will want an ubuntu machine first. Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Introducing a community based PC vendor. (Mike Feravolo)
Michael this is my last attempt trying to get you to understand that I'm not in it for money. Its a hobby/service and all advertisements on the site are strickly promotional (exchanges)... There isn't one thing on the site making me anything... You must be a business man since that is the only thing you see.. You still believe that I am selling these computers... I'm not... Anyone can, thats the point... I'm sorry that I created something for everyone to benefit from and not only help spread the word about linux but actually help get Ubuntu/Linux in peoples homes. It also helps others make some extra cash who have a talent and find pleasure in setting up machines with linux. Lets see, I'm helping spread opensource, I'm spreading the word about ubuntu, I'm giving everyone a venue to buy a linux computer, I'm giving everyone a place to sell/showcase their work... and I'm doing it all for free... If thats not in the spirit of opensource then I'm not sure what is. And don't give me that but. you plan to make money someday off the site.. Is linux free? Yes. Does linux make money? Of course it does! Linux, opensource, GPL does not mean You must make no money! Its about freedom not just about free (non profit). If I ever decide to make some money off of Buntfu it will be through paid advertising not fees or commissions from users. Good Grief Ronnie, You certainly are correct in your statement that many sites are breaking Canonical's trademark. My LoCo is doing it with our blog at http://alabamaubuntu.org. BUT there is a big difference between your site and my site. I am NOT trying to make money off of the site. I am, in fact, sticking to the community spirit of Ubuntu and spreading the message. If Canonical came to me and asked (or told) me to change the name, then I would. I certainly would not take it to an official Ubuntu channel and degrade the members because of the actions that Canonical took against me. I wish you well in your endeavors, but I will not use your service because of the actions that you have brought to this list. Like Jeremy said, had you taken a different tact, you could have avoided a lot of misunderstanding and probably not made such a bad name for yourself or your business. Re: [ubuntu-marketing] Introducing a community based PC vendor. (Mike Feravolo)
Good god would you guys get a friggin clue! This site is not about ripping anyone off its about giving the everyday man a venue to sell his ubuntu/linux work either as a hobby or profession whatever... I wanted to flatter Ubuntu and give Ubuntu/Linux a community based venue where anyone can sell there Ubuntu/Linux based computer because they like setting them up and maybe they can make some extra cash doing it.. And help promote linux as a whole. All of you have been so tainted by Microsoft and big business that you think there is some evil plan behind everything THERE ISN'T I'm just a guy with a love for Ubuntu who had an idea to give everyone an auction style store to showcase there work and sell them if they wanted to With ebay killing you with fees I thought it would be nice for everyone to have a place dedicated to linux/Ubuntu computers to buy and sell at without the fees... But apparently no one is allowed to be good hearted anymore and create something for others. Would it be nice if Buntfu could actually pay for itself one day sure. But its not the reason behind it. Maybe I had the wrong idea about the philosophy behind linux then again maybe the philosophy of linux is being jaded by big business in general,... who knows but thanks for making me feel like I did something for nothing... All I wanted to do was create something unique for everyone because its the only big way I can contribute I'm not a hard core programmer or a linux god or have big deep pockets... Just a guy trying to help I think there were two guys like that who started this whole thing anyway... Remember their names? If not you don't know linux Sincerely, Ronnie Ubuntu - Linux for Human Beings Buntfu - PCs from Human Beings Thats called flattery not theft Buntfu is not a linux distro, its computers with Ubuntu/Linux on them from everyday people. hence PCs from Human Beings I'm sorry but the whole . . . human beings seems just a bit silly to me but that's just one man's opinion. The format of the boo-foo or however you are suppose to pronounce it is wrong on a number of levels: The Human Beings Thing is a direct rip-off. They are reselling systems that you could just buy from the Manufacturer in an Auction Format. The Disclaimer is exactly what they are doing. Although I agree with most the the comment below: That is precisely what made me feel uncomfortable. I have had enough of half truths, clever concealment and spin and worse, when I was using . . . . Although they might be perfectly honorable well intentioned people, I do not feel well motived to use it. -- alan cocks Kubuntu user#10391 I little bit of spin, concealment and half truths is required to sell anything, but this is way beyond the acceptable level. One of things that I try to find for people are systems that have Linux installed at the factory. This is especially important if they want to use WiFi, since getting WiFi to work can be a pain in the . . . . I like the people in Berkley California, (ZaReason) and Dell's approach to selling Lunix Systems, since there is no confusion who they are and what Ubuntu is.
