Re: help with qmail package for ubuntu + debian?

2009-10-16 Thread Jiri Navratil
Thank you for quick and clear responses. I will not invest time in this,
after looking at these referenced URLs.

After listening to Ubuntu UK podcast, I decided to offer also help with
qmail package. I appretiate these honest answers.

qmail + OpenBSD spamd is doing great job for me and for my customers on
OpenBSD boxes. My intention was to utilise my long good experineces and
help to provide more options for Debian / Ubuntu users.

I did two things, which may help qmail supporters.
1. I requested qmail support from Red Hat
2. I CC Dr. Bernstein (I hope that this is not too incorrect step)

Best regards,
Jiri

apt-proxy Version: 1.9.36.3 on Ubuntu 9.04 --- bad header lines error

2009-10-16 Thread Gareth Tuffney
Hi

When running apt-get update with apt-proxy 1.9.36.3 running some of the
repositories return a bad header error. I am able to ping and share files
across the network.

I cannot find any documentation as to how to resolve this or even a
definition of error. The README file is unavailable on
http://apt-proxy.sourceforge.net.

Can you offer any insight into the causes of this error and how to fix it,
or alternatively provide me with a working link to the README ( the URL on
the sourceforge.net is - /cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/apt-proxy/apt-proxy/README)

Thanks for your time

Regards
Gareth Tuffney

New version of Gfax

2009-10-16 Thread George Farris
Could who ever packages Gfax have a look at getting the new version
packaged for Karmic. http://gfax.cowlug.org has 0.7.7 and it works
well with Karmic and Jaunty.

Thanks

And here is the ITP bug for qmail:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=457318

What I know about qmail that it needs several patches to match current
expectations of a MTA. And a qmail package might need some work to match
Debian policy.
So one needs to be familiar with qmail to know where to find all the
needed patches and a little bit familiar with packaging to make a
package which complies with the Debian policy.

Jiri, you should contact the people who want to get qmail into Debian
(and Ubuntu then) to avoid duplicate work and also to know about the
current status of the ITP.

Michael

We already have a qmail source package. It is kind of a special case. My
recommendation would be to contact the Debian maintainer. Whatever gets
done in Debian will flow into Ubuntu.

Do not turn this into a debate about the merits of qmail, that is
off-topic. You can see the debian report on inclusion here:

Is it unmaintained upstream? We don't want a mail client full of
security holes and bugs. It's not just a "package and go" process.

help with qmail package for ubuntu + debian?

2009-10-16 Thread Jiri Navratil
Hello,

I'm considering to create qmail package for debian and ubuntu usage.

I'm using 12 years qmail (compiling from source code) As the owner
changed the licence, now the package can be created.

Could you let me know, if my work can be taken? What I shall read to
understand, how hard is to make package, which roles shall be followed?

Thank you.

Best regards,
Jiri
