It's good to have a competition. The desktop Linux world wants Wayland,
but only manage to release Rebecca Black OS. Kubuntu was hoping for a
miracle with Wayland.

[Ubuntu-PH] XMir Display Server

I'm waiting for this to happen in spite of the opposition. As I long to have
X-less Linux desktop for so long.
However, I need to have a fallback Linux desktop in case Ubuntu on XMir won't
live up to _my_ expectations.

Ok. Maganda yan. Somebody needs to create a customized distro first tuned
to our needs(that includes several people like graphic designers and sys
admins), then start the translation process.
If there is an application that needs to be translated to Cebuano or
Filipino languages, then I think I can provide a little time to help.
I already tried to translate the "Ubuntu Software" center to Filipino
through my launchpad account but found it difficult, because the default
English is much easier to understand.

Allan, I applaud your enthusiasm for a Pinoy distro. Here's a tool that

We can remove all Server components sa Ubuntu base installation para mas
lalong liliit ang distro at kaunti na lang i-translate.
Ang mga Audio, video, graphics apps at Open Office ay pwede nang hindi
i-translate. Kahit yung web browser na lang at text editor ang

muna for a start.
So Ubuntu-ph translation team cannot make an independent Ububtu-based

Wala rin kasing Philippine translation ang Bayanihan linux.

I think it is Filipino language not Tagalog.

Hi guys,

I believe Eric Manuel Pareja has done this before. He contributed code,
translated Ubuntu installation into Tagalog. However, I am not exactly so sure
whether there exists a full tagalog translation for the entire Ubuntu Desktop.

I agree, Ubuntu Team Philippines is the first step to raise this issue. Or you
may contact one of the team members at Ubuntu Launchpad Team Philippines .

Cheers!

Thank you jdcrisostomo for your help.
How can we campaign to all Filipinos to join the Ubuntu localization
so that Linux will be translated to Filipino?
Maybe we can post it in Facebook, university forums, school mailiing
list, government mailing list.
We could also post in on job sites mentioning that joining an open
source activity is like an on-the-job training and will be added to
their resumes and there are many ways to contribute to an open source
project and anybody can join.

"Imagination is as vital to any advance in science as learning and
precision are essential for starting points."   - Percival Lowell

The Ubuntu team is very pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
(Long-Term Support) for Desktop, Server, Cloud, and Core products.

Codenamed "Precise Pangolin", 12.04 continues Ubuntu's proud tradition
of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a
high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.  The team has been hard
at work through this cycle, introducing a few new features and improving
quality control.

To be a bit more precise about what we're releasing today...
There are 54 product images and 2 cloud images being shipped with
this 12.04 LTS release,  with translations available in 41 languages.
The Ubuntu project's 12.04 archive currently has 39,226 binary packages
in it, built from 19,179 source packages, so lots of good starting points
for your imagination!

For PC users, Ubuntu 12.04 supports laptops, desktops, and netbooks
with a unified look and feel based on an updated version of the desktop
shell called "Unity", which introduces "Head-Up Display" search capabilities.
Finding and installing software using the Ubuntu Software Centre is
now easier thanks to improvements in speed, search and usability.

Ubuntu Server 12.04 has made it much easier to provision, deploy,
host, manage, and orchestrate enterprise data centre infrastructure
services with the introduction of new technologies such as "Metal as
a Service" (MAAS), the Juju Charm Store, and the latest OpenStack version,
codenamed Essex.  These technologies further position Ubuntu Server
as the best OS for scale-out computing.

Read more about the new features of Ubuntu 12.04 in the following
press releases:

http://www.canonical.com/content/ubuntu-1204-lts-aims-conquer-enterprise-desktop

Long term support maintenance updates will be provided for
Ubuntu 12.04 for five years, through April 2017.  For those working
on the ARM architecture, an 18 month supported release is also
provided for the ARM server using the ARM Hard Float (HF) architecture.

Thanks to the efforts of the global translation community, Ubuntu
is now available in 41 languages.  For a list of available languages
and detailed translation statistics for these and other languages, see:

  http://people.canonical.com/~dpm/stats/ubuntu-12.04-translation-stats.html

The newest Kubuntu 12.04 (LTS), Edubuntu 12.04 (LTS), Xubuntu 12.04 (LTS),
Mythbuntu 12.04, Lubuntu 12.04  and Ubuntu Studio 12.04 are also being
released today.  More details can be found in their announcements:

Sorry for the off-topic.. :)

+Elmer, exciting, the Raffle Draw portion, and given that this is PLDT, a
Toyota Jazz is not that surprising. I am all ok for an Android phone/tablet, I
am now willing to attend!!! The thing that I was afraid of is the Black & White
attire. Hahaha..
So any advice for my attire will be greatly appreciated!

Good morning,

Has anybody had any experience in the past to attend PLDT PASALAMAT NIGHT?
I was invited, and just curious of what to expect, whether to accept it or not.

1. primary domain controller running openldap, managed by webgui

2. nfs and samba server (for the few windows boxes, around 5).
home folder mounted as a separate partition (need to enforce quotas)

3. around 25 desktops (home directory pathed to nfs/samba server
when they log in)

4. backup server for the pdc and file server and sql server (db is
around 30gb compressed), must dump to a nas and a tape (offsite
backup, manual intervention of changing tapes at 8am daily).
backup and restore should be easy.

5. backup of pdc, files server and backup server (virtualize?)

6. users can print to a central fax server (with two usb

hylafax.org

7. one update server for the client desktops (to save bandwith)

8. Print audit, who print, what, pages, with report summary.
softcopy of all print requests if available

http://printserver:631 plus nagios(extension), http://www.papercut.com/
is a great tool for this though. I think all of the above can be done
with a combination of Ubuntu server, samba (auth=LDAP(Fedora Directory
for failover instead of openldap)), hylafax, nagios, rsynch.

9. hardware design? dell r710?

10. manage, alerts (email when errors occur like system stopped

Can be done with Nagios

11. all processes are automatic

security concerns are important.

please feel free to recommend, we're looking for a best practice

please do recommend.

can you please point me in the right direction for a person that

Unless if you are a developer something like you develop utilities/applications
that relies heavily on X-dev, I can't see any reason why you aren't comfortable
with another window server alternative, since it is transparent to the user,
also Wayland was develop with backward compatibility in mind, so the transition
is smooth. The difference is that we can expect GNOME and KDE to be faster to
render windows than what we have today.

Re: [Ubuntu-PH] Welcome Michael Lunar

2010-10-26 Thread Allan E. Registos
Welcome to the Ubuntu GNU/Linux world... : - )
If you ever need some software to get installed in your system, the "Software
Center", is your helper.
Installing a software in Windows "Click Setup.exe" is quite different in Linux,
and it is easier in Linux than in Windows as long as the software is present in
the "Software Center."

hey...

am a newbie... just started using Ubuntu about three weeks ago. I was
attempting to install Windows7 on my laptop but for some reason I cannot. Even
with a clean install. My friend's got a 9.04 and he told me to wipe my laptop
clean by installing Ubuntu and clean install Windows7 after... didn't work!

And s... I got stuck with with the 9.04! BUT when the Update Manager showed
an Upgrade to 10.10, i clicked on upgrade and soon after... my laptop won't
start! Tried slipstreaming Windows... didn't work! Then I made a Pendrive
installer of Ubuntu10.04 following on-line instructions, installed it on my
laptop and have been enjoying Ubuntu since then.

I am a convert and have been showing my new OS (with the jiggling windows) to
my peers. One friend has actually installed Ubuntu using the Pendrive I
created. Am still discovering a lot of things about Ubuntu hence I joined the
Mailing list. Now... am a bit nervous about these changes you are talking about
here...

Sorry... am not a full time techie (or what some call a geek), I'm an above
average Windows user and would like to be formally "doctrinized" on Ubuntu...
Am really starting to like it but am beginning to be wary...

No, I am not a team member. Too early to comprehend on what should the behavior

Forgive me about that. I assume that when you customize Ubuntu for Windows
users, Gnome or Ubuntu's Gnome is not that good enough for Windows users. The
key is to educate them the ways of Linux. As I stated and this is my
experience, Windows users like what we have here doesn't care much of the top
and bottom panels of Gnome as long as they can "print", "share", and "run" MS
office. At least Ubuntu looks just like what it is = with a Unix-based shell.
Any Windows user who once use other distro with a Gnome desktop will quickly
identify Ubuntu with Linux. Try that with the distros being customized to look
like Windows, and those users will expect that it will behave as Windows, and
if it doesn't they will junk it and say it is broken.

computers for an NGO with Ubuntu installed as an OS. Users are all young
people. It maybe long, but I'm crossing my fingers on what the Chrome OS will

 decision is the level of

>looks cool; [2] they don't care if it feels fast; [3] they >want something

>(re)-learning.

When we demoed Ubuntu, we made it look like Windows XP and Windows 7, as in
customized as much as possible, and still those 4 I mentioned above still came
up.

So changing the desktop to Unity default, based on our experience, will further
make the Windows users to _not_ to migrate, nor even try. "Unity for desktop as
default" will not break that ice. For netbook, sure, it _is_ a netbook after
all, we need space and speed. But for a desktop as default? It's a bad
decision.

This clearly tells me that Canonical is done with the "come Windows users try
us out" phase. The recent decisions, from Jaunty onwards, were all signs to me
that they have a new vision and a new objective. They are now treating Ubuntu
as an independent "OS". A product worthy to be called an Operating System in
and of itself. Ubuntu is Ubuntu. Ubuntu _is_ _the_ OS.

Compare that to say Debian: Debian is the distro, Linux is the OS, hence
"Debian Linux". Canonical look to me to be aiming for something like this:

Person A: "What's your OS?"
Person B: "Linux"
Person A: "What distro?"
Person B: "Debian" or some other distro…
Person A: "How about you?"
Person C: "Me? My OS is Ubuntu"
Person B: "That's the distro, you should say Linux"
Person C: "Huh? What is Linux? My OS is Ubuntu not Linux, whatever that is"

They're repositioning Ubuntu down that path (or up that future). It's done
being an "alternative", it's done being a "gateway to Linux". That's why
they're deciding on major changes that many people are reacting against, like
this one now.

For us geeks, again, for "us geeks", it is as easy as installing whatever DE
and DE-shell we want to use. For the average user, most of them are not
comfortable with that, doesn't have time to learn and tinker and break their
machines, and whatever reason why they are still an "average user". There are
people built for building skyscrapers and people made to be just end-users of
those skyscrapers. And there are people with plenty of time on their hands, and
people who just wants everything familiar so they bother not with reading this
and that just to do this and that.

The phase where Canonical is now is for those with time on their hands to learn
something new. And to some extent, the people who build buildings not the
people who lives/use the end product.

Is it a good move? Only time can tell. Or maybe the question is: Is it the
right time to do this?

Right now, the popular OS are: Mac (for Unix, lolz), Windows, and Linux. Most
are mis-informed about the name/brand "Linux" but not with "Ubuntu". I only
hope that the good reputation they have built behind the brand "Ubuntu" will
bring the product to greater heights and success with the new path and future
they want to bring it to.

Maybe one day it will be like this: Mac, Windows, and Ubuntu. ^_^

Re: [Ubuntu-PH] Downgrading from Meerkat to Lynx

2010-10-17 Thread Allan E. Registos

According to this site: http://jaqque.sbih.org/kplug/apt-pinning.html
Apt pinning allows you to access the latest updates without compromising the
stability of your system. When it is enabled, you can have lynx installed but
can access Meerkat's latest updates but this will only apply to
applications(non critical updates) only. So if iamthechicken...@gmail.com 's
module is a driver module, this may serve him best.

However, ubuntu recommends backports rather than apt-pinning:

Re: [Ubuntu-PH] DNS Setup

Yes, that would mean a virtual machine for another DNS is not an ideal solution
= if the host OS goes down and network problems , but for other DNS software
related problems, the virtual machine is still capable of backing up, I think
this is a poor setup. My current company setup is we do not have DNS servers on
our own but hosted at ISP(PLDT). Registrar's built in DNS servers won't resolve
to correct hostnames.

Yeah that could work as well. However, I dont think it's ideal practice since
if your link goes down, there's no DNS service to fallback to. And some
registrars detect if the nameservers are on the same IP block.

Hi,

Thank you for your replies. PHNET is the registry for the EDU.PH
domain name. The provide domain registration, DNS hosting and web
hosting services. However, we would like to run our own DNS for this
purpose. Indeed for the setup that's behind the NAT port-forwarding is
the solution. PHNET requires that you must register at least 2
nameservers for validation. I will try to contact PHNET on this issue.
Thanks again guys for your helpful suggestions.

There are a lot of software development companies in Cebu. You can try
applying for a job
in Lexmark RnD, as a device driver developer or in firmware
development(C/C++) and there are a lot of
website development companies as well (PHP and ruby on rails).

Of course, salaries for tech jobs here are just on the comfortable
level, but not luxurious (except if you're
single and already a senior-level).

Looks like Oct 16 (Saturday) is the date.

As for the program, we'll do live streaming with Zamboanga, I'll talk about
what's new in Maverick, we can do a burn fest and install fest, we'll eat,
drink, and socialize. Ayos ba yon?

Dala na lang tayo ng food and drinks. Kung may makakapag-sponsor, ok din.

Sana, may mag-organize pa sa ibang areas para mas masaya.

Hello Guys,

This is a very sad day for me since I'm announcing my resignation as
the LoCo Contact for the Philippine Team. I've thought this through and
decided it's the best for the team.

My time for Ubuntu and Ubuntu-PH has been drastically reduced for quite
some time now due to additional workload, school, family, and renewed
focus on software development (specifically the Linux Kernel and
Wammu/Gammu). And I can no longer stand by and watch while my absence
holds the team back.

I'm not sure how we go about selecting my replacement, but I sure wish
someone would volunteer themselves for this job or maybe hold an
election. In the mean time, I'm assigning Zak Elep (our previous LoCo
Contact) to stand-in for me on all Ubuntu-PH matters - _but_ only if he
accepts this responsibility, I don't want to burden him further.

== Website ==
I've already sent Zak and Loell (our forum moderator) the login and db
credentials for our website. If you need it, I only ask that you become
an Ubuntu member as the minimum requirement.

In addition, our website is closest to my heart and I will continue
working on it during my free time. I'm still working on improving the
theme and a Planet alternative that'll work on our current host.

== Official Ubuntu and Official Ubuntu Server Books ==
I already mailed the 2 books to JC, anyone who needs them will have to
contact him directly. Please make sure that you mail/bring it back since
he'll be the custodian of the books and will guarantee that the whole
team benefits from it.

Another set of free books is available[1], so the next LoCo Contact
should make sure to order one.

== Philippine Team Wiki ==
Our wiki is sadly outdated, we need someone to look after it. Also note
that we need to create/submit a monthly team report. The howto is
documented on the TeamReports wiki.

I have an answer:
It will depend on your requirements. If you use Linux heavily e.g. development
and internet, and little use on Windows for office use(i.e., excel) then it is
better to run Windows as the guest OS and desktop Linux as the host. I
recommend setting the memory of the Windows guest to a minimum of 2Gb or more,
and 4Gb for the host and this will require a 64-bit Linux host.

But if you use Windows heavily for example gaming and any other Windows
specific applications, then you must follow above in a reverse format with a
recommendation that you will install a Windows 7 64-bit edition as the host.

Just my two-cents.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think this may be a driver issue since the
time when I can't shutdown/restart my laptop, audio's not working, usb storage
auto mount does not work and there's a lot of error found when I type dmesg
after inserting a pcmcia device.

Might as well revert back to ubuntu 9.10 since that was the version that my
laptop works well. Thanks again. hope my laptop will work out of the box when
10.10 comes out.

add the option acpi=force

" but what if you administer both windows and *nix"?

My preference is to use a Linux desktop. Although I am managing only two Linux
servers one for email and squid and the other two for legacy Win NT VM servers,
your requirements might be different. You can manage Linux servers from any OS.
In Linux, we can use the Terminal server client or rdesktop to view the
Windows/NT servers/workstations, so there must be nothing that prevents you
from using Linux to administer both Windows and Linux. To view Linux desktops
and servers, I am using freenx server.

It's probably an Indicator Applet Session 0.3.7 bug so you need to use another

But if you use Windows heavily for example gaming and any other Windows
specific applications, then you must follow above in a reverse format with a
recommendation that you will install a Windows 7 64-bit edition as the host.

Just my two-cents.

2010-05-06 Thread Allan E. Registos
As I mentioned earlier, the way the PCOS count the votes is error prone, plus
the things you've mentioned below if that is true it is indeed a matter of
serious concern of the P.O.P.

Yes - but there are more problems found :

Among the unresolved problems revealed by the SysTest code review are the
following:

• “Possible database corruption", which can result in loss of vote data
(p.16, 24)
• “Potentially incomplete, corrupted, overwritten or lost audit logs,"
which can also result in loss of vote data as well as make it possible for
intruders to hide their tracks (p.18-19, 21, 23, 30-31);
• “Possible injection of malicious SQL [database] commands", which can
corrupt vote data (p.19);
• “Unencrypted passwords in database and other encryption and password
problems" (p.19-20, 24, 29); and
• “Possible loss of significant digits" in the vote data (p.20, 22).

Re: [Ubuntu-PH] OT: Ubuntu on Election Automation

2010-05-06 Thread Allan E. Registos
Thanks for that info. I've been watching closely the video shown in the TV news
lately, to see what OS they've been using at Smartmatic for configuring cf
cards. I noticed a top/bottom bars but I am not so sure, since I am also
thinking of a theory that it maybe a running program in full screen, so thank
you guys.

Anyway, has anyone bothered from the recent cf card issues??
I think their is a flaw in the design of Smartmatic PCOS machines the way it
counted votes, ok, as we believe that no system is 100% perfect, but as I see
it, it is more to error prone like the single and double spacing issue.
Anyway this is a separate topic, if you guys knew of where this topic was being
discussed, kindly provide me a link...

Cheers,
Allan

Re: [Ubuntu-PH] ubuntu-ph Digest, Vol 60, Issue 4

2010-03-28 Thread Allan E. Registos
I think you can just ask questions and post the relevant errors in your log.
Someone in this list will take a look at it and give you a piece of advice. I
don't know about Novell's networking protocol, I think it was IPX/SPX or NCP. I
believe it is not Samba that can talk to a Netware server(Samba's purpose is to
talk to Windows computers), I think it is
http://www.novell.com/products/clients/linux/overview.html.

Good Day Allan,

Thanks. Is it okay to post here my logs. Though I had install Ubuntu Server
9.10 and configure Samba and everything works well for now. I had transfer some
network folder from our Novell 3.12 server w/ a 10g HD. Yah, its 3.12( Super
luma na talaga). I still cant understand some of the logs. Hope someone can
tell that something is not right base on my logs.

I missed the original mail.
Does the ISP provided you with username, password and IP address/DNS servers?
If it is DHCP, then Ubuntu will connect to the internet once the ethernet cable
is connected from your ZTE ADSL to your VIA RhineII Adapter(If this card is
Linux-supported), so I suspect that you do have a custom details provided by
your ISP.

Another option would be to setup a router - any router then setup the
connection details(provided by your ISP) to your router, setup a DHCP
connection and connect your Ubuntu to that router. Then you should be connected
to the internet immediately. The difficulty of configuring a router for an
internet connection and then DHCP for local addresses varies from router to
router but most often it is more difficult than configuring Ubuntu directly for
internet connection. We do have an Edimax router with username/password/public
IP/dns server-configured to connect to a ZTE ADSL provided by PLDT.

I can't seem to visualize the steps above so let's wait for the
community to answer your questions.

I can answer this last question though - No, it doesn't matter where the
LiveCD came from, as long as it was burned/pressed from the official
ISO. The only time it'll become a factor is when it won't boot up.
