LyX download size

2012-04-04 Thread irlandes
Here is the list of LyX dependencies on 10.04, list obtained by apt-get
remove and then cancel:

The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer
required:
  texlive-extra-utils texlive-base texlive-pictures-doc
texlive-fonts-recommended doc-base texlive-pstricks-doc dvipng lmodern
texlive-common
  texlive-latex-extra-doc libaiksaurus-1.2-0c2a texlive-pstricks luatex
preview-latex-style ttf-lyx prosper tipa
  texlive-latex-recommended-doc texlive-latex-base-doc libkpathsea5
libboost-signals1.40.0 libt1-5 libaiksaurus-1.2-data texlive-latex-extra

  texlive-fonts-recommended-doc libfreezethaw-perl ps2eps latex-beamer
texlive-luatex texlive-font-utils latex-xcolor texlive-doc-base

I remember LyX as having a really big download, but don't have a
computer to dink with. I have used LyX to produce a book.

Slow DSL

2011-09-16 Thread irlandes
I think you have been given a good solution to slow service, Bob. But,
another option depending upon your exact problem is the command wget.

wget -c url.iso

lets you stop download and start again at your convenience. You can
download a few MB, and start again, even many days later, with no data
lost, as long as the iso has not been changed.

It expects to find previous downloads in the directory where the
terminal is setting, and if it is not there, will restart the download.

It seems to me, by defective memory, that there are mirrored images of a
small net iso which is designed to download other things desired. But, I
can't remember if Ubuntu actually lets you select which packages to
download, like debian does or not.

Maybe a wget bug?

2011-02-25 Thread irlandes
I am not sure of this, or I'd be working on a bug report.

Kubuntu 10.04 on a Dell Vostro laptop.

I have always used wget for downloading iso's. Our service in rural
Mexico is nothing to write about. Also we have file size limitations
which I did not understand until I installed vnstat last week.

Over the years wget always gave perfect md5sums no matter how many times
I interrupted the download with CTRL-Z, then restarted it.

In recent months, I get bad downloads. I finally let kde-dvd run all the
way with no interruptions, and got a good download. I had tried 3 times
with interruptions and all three were bad on md5sum.

It may be coincidence. I need to do a lot more work before I decide it
is a real problem or not.

Also, I need to try a later version and see if it is the same.

I think I will need to do a small iso such as puppy. 1.3 GB is too large
for experiments on my service.

Testing in USB

2011-01-27 Thread irlandes
Interesting. I haven't done much testing but 10.04 because I'd almost
rather take a beating than install a distro to suit my tastes.

If USB flash testing is good, I will have to take another look at it. I
have accumulated a significant number of flash drives, up to 16GB. I
probably can't do dailies, because it takes too long to download. But,
I can work on alphas and betas.

Thanks for info.

Strange KATE problem after Update

2011-01-07 Thread irlandes
Two or three days ago, I got a major update for 10.04 in my Dell Vostro
laptop . I think when I enabled it, it mentioned something like 97 bug
fixes, if my quick glance was correct, which is probably a clue as to
which update it was.

An hour or two later, I needed KATE. I tend to type major Web postings
on KATE, then copy and paste when I finish. This comes from too many
postings over the years lost by URL glitch. Also, more important
postings, I tend to save to my HD for future reference. (I write a lot.)

I clicked the icon in the bar across the bottom, and got a KDE crash
handler message for KATE. Again. Again.

I opened a terminal and typed kate, and it came up normally.

When I finished my typing, I tried the icon again, and it again gave me
the crash handler.

I thought it over, and when I remembered the major update, I rebooted
and the KATE icon works perfectly now.

I realize this is no big deal for most home users who reboot from time
to time. TSC might get nasty, heh, heh, but I think they use Redhat.

And, I cannot supply the information you want, because by its nature it
is not duplicable. But, it is so unusual to need to reboot to fully
implement an update that I felt I should at least mention it, even if it
is not a full fledged bug.

Had I not been engrossed in my posting, I would have chased it down.
Or, at least I'd like to think so.

To me, this installation of 10.04 is almost perfect. I had it on another
partition, and it developed a major mess up in Firefox scrolling which
to this date I was unable to fix. So, I simply reinstalled in another
partition, but this new one is the best OS I have ever had installed. I
do so much with it, including major editing with GIMP of old damaged
photos. (1890 and newer.) Love it. I have it on an old desktop
e-machine and it is that good, there, too. I am sticking with it until
the boxes die or support runs out.

Nokia 5530

2010-08-22 Thread irlandes
The disgrace of it all. I went up the mountain to download baptism
photos from a niece's Nokia 5530 phone. In Kubuntu 10.04, I could load
the driver for digiKam and when she connected via USB, and turned on the
phone, her phone would say it connected. But, the computer could not
connect to the phone.

I had to go to Vista and it automatically detected the phone and loaded
the pictures, then I moved the photos, to Kubuntu.

My problem is, I don't have a phone to work out details for a bug, or
even to make sure I did everything right.

I tell ya', it is rare I can't find a way to do a job in Linux.

Updates to 10.04 okay, but...

2010-05-07 Thread irlandes
I have two machines, an old desktop which had 9.10 on it. I updated it
online, and it worked okay but no audio for youtube. I finally realized
something in the mixer was shut off. This was a minor problem for an
experienced user, but could be bad for a newbie.

That machine seems to work okay, and the Firefox browser scrolls
smoothly with the up and down arrows. (I had this problem on my main
machine with 9.10.)

On the main machine, I first cloned the entire HD to an external HD just
in case, because this one has all the good stuff on it.

It updated fine. The Firefox browser still scrolls in a very unpleasant
manner. Further stated, it is simply not acceptable. So, it is not
something in the 1500+ files updated.

So, I installed via CD ISO to an empty partition. This one, Firefox
scrolls perfectly. To be frank, I have no idea where to start. I may
look at plugins or extensions and see if removing something helps.

I would prefer to solve the problem if I can, but with no ideas where to
start and some serious deadlines on personal projects, I don't know how
well I will do.

In general 10.04 looks fine. I have a lot of work to get the other
partition working exactly as I want. I will let y'all know if I find
something on the scrolling problem.

Update on Firefox problem

2010-04-06 Thread irlandes
I finally had some time, not a lot, but some. My schedule involves
spending more time using my computer for forum moderation; book
production; and photo retouching; with testing as a second priority.

I tried putting in another "stable" version, which somehow ended up
being 3.6.4pre with the different name. Still messed up scrolling on my
Dell Vostro A860 laptop, and Kubuntu 9.10.

I put my 10.04 flash drive on, scrolled solid as a rock, and upgraded
Firefox to 3.6.4. Scrolling solid as a rock.

So, my real worry about shipping a problem is not a worry, at least not
on my machine.

And, I conclude there is a serious problem with Kubuntu 9.10. on my
machine. I do not know where to start, there is nothing much there that
was not installed with 9.10 during set up, and re-installing 9.10 this
close to 10.04 final is not an option at all.

I got some communications on this. One man said I should not call it
disgusting, but should be writing bug reports on it. I tended to agree,
but now I am not sure I do.

First, though many of you with much more experience with bugs may have
forgotten, it takes some practice to write bug reports efficiently. I
wrote exactly one, which has been fixed, and with all the things
required to write the first bug, it took many hours. When I find a solid
one, I will work at it again, and after several, I will also be able to
casually investigate existing bug reports and input one if not there
already.

Second, what on earth do I report? I don't even know where to start. A
problem somewhere in 9.10 which causes bad Firefox scrolling? Yeah,
right.

There is still a problem with 9.10 Gwenview CROP function on some
computers. We spotted it right away, and the developer wrote a fix
really fast, and requested it be shipped via (bug updates?). Months
later, that has not been done, and I would say it is not going to be
done, so 9.10 Gwenview will run through it's support cycle with no fix
shipped. The problem is fixed in 10.04 but 9.10 has a considerable
remaining life expectancy.

So, I have not bothered to report a multiple crash problem in digikam
9.10. It is also fixed in 10.04, but will also be out there through the
support life of 9.10.

Since 10.04 is looking good, I am dealing with this problem until then
by installing Opera which is also solid as a rock on scrolling.

Another suggestion was that I install 3.7 daily build on my main
computer. I checked and it reported failed build. I suspect it is a
really bad idea to install a daily build on a main computer.

If I had an idea where to start, I'd try to look into the 9.10 problems
causing this problem, but I don't. And, with 10.04 coming out in a few
days, I suspect there won't be much attention given by anyone here.

The reason I volunteered to test 10.04, with little experience, is
because 9.10 just had too many problems, and this is merely another one.
I am hoping my first impression of 10.04 being much better than 9.10
holds true.

Since 10.04 is LTS, I will work hard to report any bugs at all. if there
are any. Even though I have only written one bug, I do feel I have
learned a lot about dealing with problems, just need more practice on
the reporting.

On my use of the word disgusting, I feel that is an accurate term.
Scrolling is unbelievably bad. It is pleasing to know it will work okay
in just a few weeks.

Second problem on firefox, sorry, forgot.

2010-04-05 Thread irlandes
I forgot. Also now depending upon where the cursor is, I get a big
blinking bar all the way to the bottom, sometimes it is real wide. This
started at the same time. I can eliminate it by clicking elsewhere.

Reminder this is in Firefox 3.6.3 automatic update on 9.10, but that
means there is some sick Firefox stuff out there just as we are ready to
finalize 10.04.

Keep a close eye on Firefox for Lucid

2010-04-05 Thread irlandes
I just got an automatic download for Firefox 3.6.3 on 9.10, and I tell
you it is murdered on my Dell Vostro A860 laptop. We sure don't want
anything like that shipped on Lucid.

I will also be looking at it as best as I can.

Originally, Firefox would scroll down the page well, with Page up or
Page down, or up and down arrows.

Then, I started having problems with Digg. If the cursor touched a
"share" icon, it wouldn't move and I had to reclick the page to scroll
at all.

Then, it got worse like now. I downloaded a scroll smoother, and though
it still worked clumsily, it started working again.

Last week, when I got an update note, it changed from 3.6.2 to 3.6.3.
Since then it has been so bad I am thinking of installing Opera which
should be not needed.

I tried Smooth scroller again. I tried turning on and off auto scrolling
and smoothing, in the preferences menu.

Down arrow takes to the bottom, then it won't go up again. Page down
moves one little jump, then you need to click the page again, then one
more little jump.

with the cursor in the up/down bar at the right, it sometimes goes up
and down, but that means when I look at a snapshot sequence, I have to
keep moving the arrow back and forth, a lot of work on a laptop with
sense pad.

Sometimes, even with auto-scrolling turned off, when I click on the
up/down bar, it takes off running all the way to the end as if I had
autoscrolling on, and nothing I do will stop it.

As I said, I will do my best on Beta, but if something like this gets
out in Lucid, we are going to get a lot of negative reviews, and a lot
of newbs are going to walk away.

As I said, I will do my best on 10.04 to make sure nothing like this
gets shipped. It is disgusting.

Beta looking good

2010-03-28 Thread irlandes
I installed Beta 1 in a flash drive, using USB creator. I am running
on a low'end Dell Vostro A860 laptop.

I am not an experienced tester, so I just started building it up to do
the things I usually do.

I note the bug I reported on the digital clock, which needed root to
save, is fixed. I also noted when I changed from Chicago to Mexico
City, it cranked back the clock one hour, so they may have added Mexico
DST schedule, which is different. NEAT I'll find out later if it
kicks it ahead or not as it should, which I am guessing is tonight or
next Sunday?

Gwenview in 9.10 had a bad CROP function on some computers. That is
fixed now. The developer wrote the fix some months ago, and has
requested it be shipped to 9.10 users, but this has not happened, which
has a negative effect on the acceptance of Gwenview, which otherwise is
a nice program. The good news is, I was forced to learn GIMP, and am
scanning old photos from the 19th Century which the old people let me
scan. I made a text file of functions as I learn them.

A bug in digikam in 9.10 meant sometimes I had to try to import photos
from my Canon A470, 15 or 20 times until it stopped crashing instantly,
then loads in the end, very frustrating. THAT IS FIXED. Thanks to the
developers. I use that a lot and my wife hates it when it does that,
and I scream insults at my computer. :)

I watched a DVD of Nelson Mandela, worked perfectly.

Youtube worked okay, except one day I booted and there was no sound. I
hit MIXER, and discovered PCM had set itself to zero. Not sure if that
is a bug or a glitch.

Installed LyX. No time to typeset a book right now, but will in the
future.

Installed ImageMagick, mogrify worked okay.

Nothing failed on anything I did. Sorry I didn't find more bugs, if it
has many. Maybe with more practice.

Answer to what to do...

2010-02-17 Thread irlandes
I am certainly not an expert on this, having found exactly two bugs.

But, if you have no other test plan, simply start using the
installation.

For example, when I booted on my persistent flash drive installation,
the battery monitor did not detect the battery until I connected and
disconnected the charger cord. This one was already reported.

Next, as I usually do, I went to change the time zone, and found it had
a problem, requiring root as opposed to receiving a password window, and
Kubuntu does not come set up for root log-in. This one I reported.

Gwenview from 9.10 has had a problem with not displaying the correct
file name when you step through a group of photos. I keep trying to get
time to check 10.04 alpha, but haven't got around to it yet to see if it
is fixed.

9.10 also have a Gwenview crop problem on some machines, mine being one
of them. (The corner boxes in crop for a photo are not visible, and one
must fumble around looking for hidden boxes.) They got the patch a long
time ago but have not shipped it as an update for 9.10. I did verify it
works okay on my machine now in the new version.

So, until you (we) get more experience, just do your favorite things to
see if they work on alpha. Try to connect with wireless if you have it.
Run some check book reconciliation with dc, edit some photos, listen to
some music or watch a movie or rip one, whatever you normally do with
your machine.

Flash testing???

2010-02-04 Thread irlandes
A thought which may or may not suit anyone. For fast testing, one can
make a USB flash drive for the iso, using USB Creator in an existing
Ubuntu installation. It may not be optimum, I don't know. I am just
starting to learn how to test, but with alpha 2 in a flash, I found a
bug adn reported it. I realize one bug isn't much, but I had to start
somewhere. Well, I found another bug, the battery monitor bug which
makes it think there is no battery until you cycle the charger cord.
But, it was already reported.

Next, I want to test Gwenview, because 9.10, it does not always display
correctly the file name, but falls behind at times.

Flash loads up quickly, my guess is much faster than installing on HD,
not sure though. I don't recommend Upgrade though; on both alpha 1 and
alpha 2, upgrade breaks it badly.

I don't have enough experience to know if flash is very different that
bugs will be missed. So, this is just a suggestion if you want to make
it faster.

I did not see any questions on testing, so I thought maybe I was in the
wrong place. Thanks.

I think I figured out my main question. Out of habit, after installing
alpha 1 and alpha 2 on a flash drive, I upgraded, and in every case it
breaks.

I think now that during alpha the upgrade is simply not set up to be
used for testing. So, I will not upgrade, or if I do, will run two
flash drives, one kept original with my bookmarks and so forth; one to
upgrade and see if it works so I can keep my primary installation and
not have to input everything every time I reinstall.

I do like in general how it works, and am glad to see CROP on Gwenview
is fixed, the patch was written for 9.10 but it has not been sent out. I
do have some bugs, but assume they have been reported. I am set up for
launchpad, and will try to check.

It is not clear if since I am running this on a laptop maybe I should be
working with laptop testing. For sure the battery monitor bug should go
there.

I am viewing this as normal start up problems when doing anything brand
new. Thanks for encouragement. I will go chasing my list of bugs to see
if they are already in, and if not, I will have to learn how to write
bug reports, another start-up issue.

Thanks, and thanks to Mr. Vikram Dhillon for help as well, including a
wiki update.

Re: Ubuntu-qa Digest, Vol 27, Issue 12

2010-01-21 Thread irlandes
Okay, I might as well take my whipping. I wanted to help test kubuntu
alpha/beta releases. I had some minor issues, and looked for the
mailing list to ask some basic questions that a newb tester might have.
I got my signature and signed up, I think on Launchpad.

Alas, for reasons unknown I signed up on this list, which is clearly
wrong. But, looking at the long list on the wiki I still can't figure
out which one to sign up on.

Go ahead and whip me for messing up, but first please tell me where to
go to post my start-up questions. I have noticed people seem to like to
tell me where to go, so have at me, thanks.

(An example to clarify -- on Alpha 1, it ran around in circles on
log-in, which I just found out was a known bug, but from inexperience I
didn't realize it. It would have been nice to hit a mailing list and
ask about it.)
