Re: Introduction

2013-11-03 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Monika,

Make sure you do enjoy quality. You can do anything from manual testing to
writing automated tests to verifying bugs.

Just make sure that you ask when you don't know something.

Doing it wrongly is not a problem, as long as you know the solution:)

Ubuntu Studio 13.10 Release Candidate Call for Testing

2013-10-13 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Dear Ubuntu Studio developers, testers and users,

We are about to release Ubuntu Studio 13.10 on the coming Thursday.
However, we are desperately in need for testing. Please help us test
the release candidate images!

Testcases for the amd64 images are in
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/305/builds/55592/testcases,
while i386 image testcases can be found in
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/305/builds/55593/testcases.
Please also do the upgrade testcases as well, linked in
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/305/builds/55391/testcases
(for amd64) and
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/305/builds/55392/testcases
(for i386).

The latest image is available at
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/dvd/current. We recommend you
to use zsync to download the image, as the images will be updated
quite frequently in the coming few days.

The changes compared to Ubuntu Studio 13.04 can be found at
http://ubuntustudio.org/2013/09/ubuntu-studio-13-10-saucy-salamander-beta-2-released/
(except for one final feature: We added Ardour 3 to the images).

You can find a detailed testing walkthrough and videos at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Walkthrough.

If you have any inquiries, feel free to ask in #ubuntustudio-devel on
Freenode or mail us at ubuntu-studio-de...@lists.ubuntu.com

We appreciate your testing efforts and let's make Ubuntu Studio 13.10
an amazing release!

Ubuntu Studio 13.10 Beta 2 call for testing

2013-09-24 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Ubuntu Studio Developers, contributors and users,

"Keep calm and test the images!" -- Ubuntu QA Team

We are now close to our second and final beta release of Ubuntu Studio
13.10 (Saucy Salamander), and we want YOU to test for us.

http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/303/builds is the place where
you follow the testcases and submit the results, simply choose "Ubuntu
Studio ", and follow the testcases. If you want a
walkthrough, check out https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Walkthrough.

There are not many changes from Beta 1 to Beta 2 (except that we fixed 4
bugs about upgrading). Changes in features can be found at
http://ubuntustudio.org/2013/09/ubuntu-studio-13-10-saucy-salamander-beta-1-released/.
So we want you to test the upgrades again, to see if there is any more
bugs. (Of course you can report bugs in images too:))

The images are always accessible at
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/dvd/current.

For any inquiries, find us at ubuntu-studio-de...@lists.ubuntu.com or
contact zequence/OvenWerks/smartboyhw in #ubuntustudio-devel on Freenode.

Happy testing!

A bit of casual Studio testing.

2013-09-19 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Ubuntu Studio contributors,

This is just a casual email, asking for some testing.

All of the Ubuntu Studio-specific bugs (at least of those found during Beta
1 testing) are fixed, and the wallpaper (along with icons) has been updated.

So, time to grab an image from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/dvd/current to do some testing!
Upgrade testing are especially welcomed.

Before Beta 2 testing officially starts I would rather want bugs reported
via Launchpad and through the mailing lists instead of using the ISO QA
Tracker (you can still use it, but I won't check it that often until the
official testing starts).

Regards,
Howard Chan (smartboyhw)

Note: CC-ing ubuntu-quality since I saw some new testers for us there, but
it would be great if you subscribe to our devel mailing list via

Re: Kickstarting growth for quality

2013-09-09 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Ali,

I will send an e-mail to Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Ubuntu Studio, to tell them
about our plan to attract more testers, and see if they will join our
effort.

Technically, I *should* be responsible for attracting more testers for
Kubuntu too (since I'm a Kubuntu Member), but I'm afraid that three
flavours for me is too much a burden.

Nevertheless, Ubuntu Global Jam is coming, and it's time to write a blog
post to Planet Ubuntu to get everyone interested in helping Ubuntu (no
matter QA or other aspects).

Re: Kickstarting growth for quality

2013-09-06 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Nicholas,

If Ali would permit, I would like to co-lead the effort with Ali, since I
have the most experience of inadquate testers (I test mostly for flavours
that have a small testing team, e.g. Edubuntu and Ubuntu Studio, and these
flavours have under 3-5 active testers).

Ali doesn't have a blog of Planet Ubuntu (since he isn't a Ubuntu Member
yet), so I will help in promoting through Planet Ubuntu and through Google+.

Ubuntu flavours 13.10 Beta 1 upgrade testing

2013-09-03 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Ubuntu Release Team, flavour's project leads and QA leads,

May I specifically remind you that the upgrade tests are NOT enabled for
Ubuntu 13.10 Beta 1. We at Ubuntu Studio decided to enable the upgrade
tests since we really need to try how it works for 13.04 -> 13.10. Flavours
do NOT necessarily have to enable the upgrade tests, but you might want to
enable these for good:)

Hi Jackson,

I know that. But it is ALWAYS that we tell different QA people of changes
of QA roles. For example, when Elfy became Xubuntu QA lead. I don't think
it is appropriate that testers don't know who to report to.

Hi Ali et. al,

The first idea is great! We can get Phill on this since he is a wiki expert.

For the second idea, I think we have a reason to include such things: For
QA. If we included our blogs there, it means that we would use the site to
promote Ubuntu QA. We can remove it of course, but these links can be great

2013-07-17 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Jackson et. al,

I don't think it is a good idea to wait until the Hackfest. Translators do
not normally subscribe to this list, and hacking on Testdrive may not seem
to be a good idea for them. I will send off an email tomorrow evening (UTC
time) to the Ubuntu and Launchpad's translation lists.

Anyways, if we are to run the Hackfest using Google+ Hangouts, make sure it
goes in the Ubuntu OnAir! course. Jackson, after you finalized everything
please inform Jose Antonio Rey (JoseeAntonioR) so he can make appropriate
arrangements on it.

And I am looking at Nicholas to do all the promotion for us:)

Hello Jackson et. al,

I don't think it is a good idea to have a Google+ Hangout all day long, we
don't have enough manpower to do a 24-hour marathon just on Testdrive
business (we aren't the Ubuntu Community Team, don't forget).

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Testdrive hackfest.

2013-07-16 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Ubuntu and Lubuntu QA Team,

It's great that Jackson will finally hold a Testdrive Hackfest for us. I
got my UbuntuKylin Testdrive code merged in just today, which is great.

As for time, it will be difficult for me to join Jackson, since when he is
morning I am sleeping, and when we are both on IRC everyone else will be
asleep!!! So probably I can't join it, sorry.

As for the date, just pick any weekend. I don't think we should actually
fit it to Ubuntu Touch's final freeze. It will attract less contributors
and I don't think we can fit Ubuntu Touch images ibto Testdrive anyway.

So Jackson, just pick any date you want on August.

Regards,
Howard Chan (smartboyhw)
(K)ubuntu member, Ubuntu QA Team member

P.S. Jackson, maybe you should do the hackfest using Google+ Hangouts.
Also, do you want me to do the Ubuntu GNOME flavour addition to Testdrive
when I come back or just do it yourself? Maybe you can do it yourself or
let new interested contributors join in, it's just copying;) I will
investigate on adding the Netboot ISO when I come back from London on 31st
July.

"Testcase pilots"

2013-07-03 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Ubuntu Quality Team,

If you have been a member of the Ubuntu Development Team (or if you have
been subscribed to the ubuntu-devel mailing list) you will know that Ubuntu
Development has a system called "Patch pilots". Look at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/CodeReviews?action=show&redirect=PatchPilot#Patch_Pilotsfor
a better introduction.

Basically, one pilot (or two if possible) stands on guard at certain times,
and helps developers who doesn't have upload permissions to upload their
packages upon review.

This might be a good idea for our team to implement. We can have people to
get their testcases (no matter Autopliot or autopkgtest or manual) reviewed
and merged.

The "testcase pilots" should be people from the Ubuntu Testcase Admins Team
in Launchpad (https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-testcase), and maybe the
Canonical Platform QA Team members.

You might wonder how to update the topic of our IRC channel at
#ubuntu-quality and at #ubuntu-autopilot. Well, as I can see in
#ubuntu-devel, patch pilots do have a process to automatically check in
using a bot. I think if everyone agrees to this plan, we can ask the
development team on how do they implement it.

This is just a suggestion, and feedback is welcome from everyone.

Do have a think of it:)

Best wishes,
Howard Chan (smartboyhw)

Re: [Lubuntu-qa] Classroom Sessions,

2013-06-03 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Dear all,

Since I am in my examination period, I need someone to change the wiki for
me. I will probably hold it on 1st July, 2013 (HKSAR Establishment Day
Anniversary Holiday) 13:00 UTC -> 15:00 UTC.

@Phill: Heh, I've done one Open Week session about QA and one Classroom
session about ISO testing, I know the procedures;) Will that "person" be
JoseeAntonioR or philipballew?

Re: Ubuntu Studio 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) Release Candidates needs testing!

2013-04-23 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello Ubuntu Studio testers,

We finally got the RC image listing in the ISO QA Tracker! The summary page
of all flavours is available in
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds.

For Ubuntu Studio we have three main testcases: Live session, where we test
to see if our DVD image can actually run Ubuntu Studio in a live session;
Install (entire disk), for us to test whether the installation is
successful; and Post Installation (Ubuntu Studio), which is a specific
testcase for Ubuntu Studio to check if the audio settings are working.

The testcases are listed below:

For amd64:
Live session:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42829/testcases/1303/results
.
Install (entire disk):
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42829/testcases/1300/results
.
Post-installation (Ubuntu Studio):
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42829/testcases/1455/results
.

For i386:
Live session:
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42830/testcases/1303/results
Install (entire disk):
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42830/testcases/1300/results
Post-installation (Ubuntu Studio):
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42830/testcases/1455/results

Download the image from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/dvd/currentand follow the
testcases in the above links. After you finished the
testing, make sure you report the results in the links above. You should
specify whether that's a pass (or fail) result, bugs reported and such.

We also have upgrade testcases (WE NEED MORE HELP IN THAT BIT) where we
test the upgrade process from 12.10 to 13.04. There are two methods: using
an image to upgrade, and using the Software Updater to upgrade.

For amd64:
Upgrade (software updater):
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42847/testcases/1310/results
Upgrade (image):
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42847/testcases/1498/results

For i386:
Upgrade (software updater):
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42848/testcases/1310/results
Upgrade (image):
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/269/builds/42848/testcases/1498/results

Again, follow the testcases and report your results in the above links.

Thank you all for testing, and we hope you enjoy QA for Ubuntu Studio!

Howard Chan (smartboyhw)

Ubuntu Studio 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) Release Candidates needs testing!

2013-04-20 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Dear Ubuntu Studio developers, testers and fellow users:

We are now near the final release of Ubuntu Studio 13.04 (Raring Ringtail).
We now need a full force of testers to help us do the testing of the
release candidate images!

Sure, you may ask: What's the point of testing dailies, when the official
RC images hasn't landed in the ISO QA Tracker[1]?

The following message is an answer from the Ubuntu Release Team to Phill
Whiteside (Lubuntu QA Lead) last evening (UTC time):
>
>> Pretty much everything from here forward (well, as of today's crons,
anyway) could be considered RC material.
>> Everything we're producing this week is an RC until we stop spinning and
declare a winner.
>> So, I'd rather you just encourage people to test early and often all
week, rather than fret over "the RC", of which there is none.
>> (Or there are many, depending on how you look at it)
>> All of them.
>> And lots.
>> Even when something *has* 100% test coverage, it STILL needs testing.
>> Because not all testers are created equal, and some do weird things to
find new and fun bugs.
>> So, really. Just ask people to beat the crap out of the ISOs over the
weekend and file bugs.

Let me clarify: There is NO SINGLE RC. All the dailies produced now until
official release are RCs. So please, download a daily image of Ubuntu
Studio 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) in [2] and start testing!

You don't necesseraily have to report results in the ISO QA Tracker (for
now, since the RC milestone hasn't been created in there). However, you DO
have to report bugs for us:) When you target a bug, try to identify the
package that causes the bug and file a bug using "apport-bug
". Please, though, after the bug is filed please also report
the bug against the "Ubuntu Studio" project (as long as that package is in
Ubuntu Studio), by clicking "Also affect project" so that we can track the
bug.

I will send a e-mail again when we DO have the milestone in the ISO QA
Tracker.

Have fun testing!

Howard Chan (smartboyhw)

Dustin and the Testdrive team:

Would it be possible to merge
https://code.launchpad.net/~sergiomeneses/testdrive/FixingCdImage/+merge/159080now?
It is a proper bug fix by Sergio Meneses, and it fixes the issue where
there are two items per image.

First of all, I am extremely sorry for the delay of this announcement. The
testing milestone for Ubuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) has just been created
in the ISO QA Tracker yesterday afternoon (UTC time) and zequence, who was
supposed to send it for me this time, clearly forgotten to. Anyways

This time we would want testers to especially help out test the upgrade
process from Ubuntu Studio 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) to Ubuntu Studio 13.04
(Raring Ringtail) Beta 2. Try to install applications that aren't included
in the default ISO, and do some settings customization.

Then either download the image from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/dvd/pending (NOT c
urrent) and boot into it to upgrade, or just use the Software Updater to do
so.

After upgrading, make sure all the packages are upgraded and that the
settings do remain. If they don't, file a bug against that package in the
Terminal using ``apport-bug (package name)``.

If you just wanted to test the images, use the previous link to download
the ISO. Make sure you run the post-installation tests too.

No matter you are doing the upgrade tests or the installation tests, make
sure you follow tightly the testcases written in
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/264/builds and report the
testing results. When reporting your results please include the bug number
(if any), a hardware profile and some remarks (e.g. whether you are using
VM).

The deadline for testing will be 4th April 14:00 UTC, so that leaves us not
much time for testing.

Fire up your machines and start testing!!

If you have any questions, e-mail ubuntu-studio-de...@lists.ubuntu.com or
go to #ubuntustudio-devel on Freenode and contact Howard Chan (smartboyhw),
Kaj Ailomma (zequence) or Len Ovenwerks (len-1304).

Regards,
Howard Chan (smartboyhw)

Dear fellow testers:

The testing period for Ubuntu Studio 13.04 Beta 1 has started!

Ubuntu Studio 13.04 Beta 1 is a release milestone to release Ubuntu Studio
13.04. This is a beta release, so only testers and enthusiatic users should
use this release.

The Ubuntu Studio team has implemented lots of new features, including new
apps (supercollider, faust, lmms, kdenlive, recordmydesktop, Krita, and
create-resources), new wallpapers from the community, new ubiquity, new
menu items, and much more!

Please test the images which can be downloaded from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/raring/dvd/current/ . We especially
want testers with amd64 machines to test the amd64 ISOs since there was
normally a problem of not having enough testers. Just follow the testcases
for Ubuntu Studio in
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/261/builds.

After you have tested it report the result on the same page of the
testcases. If the ISO installs and boots and runs OK after installation,
submit a pass result. If it fails, please submit a failed result and also
leave the comment with the reported bug(s) and comment. It would also be
nice to give us the link of your hardware profile.

If you have any questions please contact Scott Lavender (scott-work), Kaj
Ailomaa (zequence)or Howard Chan (smartboyhw) in #ubuntustudio-devel on

Wish you a happy time testing!

2. Hold a 24-hour IRC + Classroom marathon, just like what the Canonical

Dear fellow testers:

The testing period for Ubuntu Studio 12.04.2 LTS has started!

Ubuntu Studio 12.04.2 LTS is a point release of Ubuntu Studio 12.04 LTS,
incorporating the latest changes in the Ubuntu archive after the release of
Ubuntu Studio 12.04.1 LTS.

There hadn't been much big changes, except with the linux-lowlatency
kernel, which was now updated to 3.2.0-37.37, based on the Linux v.3.2.37
kernel.

Please test the images which can be downloaded from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/precise/dvd/current/ . We especially
want testers with amd64 machines to test the amd64 ISOs since there was
normally a problem of not having enough testers. Just follow the testcases
for Ubuntu Studio in
http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/milestones/254/builds.

If you have any questions please contact Scott Lavender (scott-work) or
Howard Chan (smartboyhw) in #ubuntustudio-devel on irc.freenode.net.

Wish you a happy time testing, a happy Chinese New Year of the Snake and a
happy Ubuntu 12.04.2 release day on Valentine's Day!

Re: Cadence Week 6 -- Now with more of yours truly!

2013-02-08 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Presumably I will be here on Valentine's day, 14:00-15:00 to answer
questions and also helping any flavours (Ubuntu Studio, Kubuntu, Xubuntu
and Ubuntu desktop would be my priority) to be able to finish their tests
on 12.04.2.

To testers:
This week I advise you to do more ISO testing, since 12.04.2 will clash
with Kubuntu/Edubuntu 13.04 Alpha 2. So if you think that you had done all
the ISOs in 12.04.2 section in ISO tracker, try Alpha 2.

(Good that it is Chinese New Year holiday for me, so I will be spending my
whole holiday helping testing 12.04.2 ISOs and Alpha 2 ISOs.)

Wish everyone a happy testing week, a happy Chinese New Year of the Snake,
and happy 12.04.2 and 13.04 Alpha 2 release day on Valentine's day!

Ubuntu QA Classroom session -- "Your first ISO test"

2013-01-21 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hi guys.

As mentioned in [1], I will be holding a session for people to try and
do their first ISO test.

I originally decided that the date shall be 5th February, 13:30 GMT.
(I did tell Nicholas yesterday). However, seeing that it won't be a
good idea to leave out such a big space in between Section 2+3
sessions (in 23rd January) and my session, I decided to move it
forward to 29th January, 13:30 GMT.

Hopefully than the Ubuntu Laptop Testing Team can finish it before
10th February (aka Chinese New Year).

Thanks,
smartboyhw (Howard Chan)

P.S. I hate getting things not finished after Chinese New Year, a
tradition problem:P

Re: Classroom sessions

2012-12-04 Thread Ho Wan Chan
To Nicholas, Phill:
I certainly can't do it before 17th January. I am going to have my exam
starting from the 3rd.

Best date for me should be around 22nd.

Thanks,
smartboyhw

Re: Autopilot xubuntu

2012-12-03 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Probably no. Jackson, you should probably work with knome and elfy on these
autopilot testcases.

Also to everyone: Try to remove the ubuntu...@lists.ubuntu.com from your
email's contact lists (except if you are a Qatar LoCo team member). Clearly
both I and Jackson made the mistake of sending the mails (aka the no Alpha
1 and this one) to the wrong mailing lists.

No Alpha 1 for you (except if you want to play with Kubuntu)

2012-12-03 Thread Ho Wan Chan
Hello to all!

So, Canonical has decided to remove the Alpha and Beta 1 Milestones for
Ubuntu Desktop/Netboot/Nexus7 etc.

However, community flavors can still decide to whether they want Alpha and
Beta milestones. Now it is coming up to the time where we test community
Alpha 1 ISOs.

However, in an e-mail thread concerning about the release of Alpha 1
milestones, only Kubuntu is going to do it. Even Edubuntu, which as I
recall would like to do Alpha milestones, decided to dump Alpha 1.

So unless you want to help test Kubuntu Alpha 1 images, then sorry no Alpha
1 for you!

I know this isn't a cadence week, so try to play with autopilot more or
help test some daily images!!!

Regards,
Howard Chan (smartboyhw)
