Sunsetting Ubuntu Friendly
Hello all, On October 2011 we launched the beta of Ubuntu Friendly [1], with a clear goal: being the reference of systems that work well with Ubuntu, using the community to test their own laptops and desktops and submit results, using Checkbox [2], a tool that is currently available in Ubuntu Desktop by default. The success of the tool has been minimal, looking at usage statistics it is clear that people still relies a lot more on the certification list [3] when looking for systems that work well with Ubuntu. The cost of maintenance of Ubuntu Friendly’s infrastructure is high, and cannot be justified looking at the current usage of Friendly. We have decided, therefore, to shut down the service. The service will be down on the 15th of September, and we have already add a warning message to the page that will be up until that date. The raw data Ubuntu Friendly is based on (Launchpad HW DB [4]) will still be up and running and your data will still be there after shutting down Ubuntu Friendly. We have added information with the process to the main UbuntuFriendly wiki page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuFriendly Thanks, Ara. Ubuntu Friendly - Feedback on Submission
Hello all: I would like to start a discussion on having a method for people to get feedback about their submissions. >From my understanding (please correct me if I am wrong) checkbox and launchpad results do not process submissions for inclusion to Ubuntu Friendly. For this reason building a feedback mechanism in to Ubuntu Friendly itself appears to be a good reason. My thoughts would be to change the 'can't find your results?' to 'review my submissions' which would result in a page that would utilize a person's LP login and then display their submissions and the status of each. If the submission has not been included it would list the reason for it being excluded. Would this be possible? I believe that was what was suggested as a possible way of improving the processing of data and feedback to people submitting results. Ubuntu Friendly - 13.04
JediMike: At our meeting it was asked if it was possible to retool checkbox to submit results directly to Ubuntu Friendly; is that possible? If so would it be possible in time for 13.04 or should this be a target for 13.10? What else can we do to improve the processing of results and feedback to the person who submitted the results? Ubuntu Friendly - Meeting Report - Next Meeting (Feburary 19th 17:00 UTC)
Hello all: The details about the UF meeting are here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuFriendly/Meetings/20130206 We have three action items: * SergioMeneses will be reviewing the current wiki pages and making changes were necessary -- if you would like to assist please contact him. * roadmr will produce a flowchart of the current process that submissions to Ubuntu Friendly undergo * We need a chair for the next meeting. It was decided to go with an earlier meeting for the UTC 0/+1 folks. The next meeting will be at 17:00 UTC. I am at work at this time so I can not guarantee that I ca be present and not get pulled away. If you can chair the meeting please respond on the list. Thanks. If you are interested in helping please join the launchpad team: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-friendly-squad The primary focus of the team right now is on improving the feedback to the people making submissions. roadmr reminded us that any changes to checkbox in this regard (like submitting directly to the UF website) would need to be done soon due to feature freeze. jedimike - can you comment on what avenues are available for providing feedback to the submitters? Thanks everyone for attending. Charles -- Ubuntu-quality mailing list Ubuntu-quality@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-quality
Ubuntu Friendly Meeting - February 5th / 6th (depending on TZ)
All people interested in Ubuntu Friendly: The Doodle Pool has completed and the time chosen is 01:00 UTC 2/6/2013. We will meet on #ubuntu-meeting. I think we may alternate this time slot with a 17:00 UTC slot. I also think I would like to see the team meet twice a month to get items off the ground. meeting agenda: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuFriendly/Meetings please feel free to add your own items -- any items we do not get to we will schedule until next time. Ubuntu Friendly - Meeting
Hello all: The results of the Doodle poll were that the times I listed were not good for a majority of the team. Out of 8 people the most that could meet were three and that was at the latest hour. The only days were Tuesday and Wednesday. For this reason I want to open one more poll, but I am going to put one two options for UTC and two options for UTC -5, and I will only include Tuesday and Wednesday. I hope this will give us a better picture of a good meeting time. The new poll is here: http://doodle.com/nqhhkycwr9aihb69 Also, I added a pad for us to brainstorm at: http://pad.ubuntu.com/sClb0uH2g8 Thanks, Charles -- Ubuntu-quality mailing list Ubuntu-quality@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-quality

Everyone: My life became a little bit of a mess this past Sunday. My little boy has an abscessed tooth and I came down with the flu. Phil: I would love to come up with something... let me get through the issue with my son and then I can refocus on the issues at hand with UF. Thanks for thinking of UF and myself. If anyone else wants to take the lead on the classroom session please feel free to step forward. My apologies for the disturbance in the force. Hi Charles, we are going some way in the up coming sessions for friendly, specifically the laptop sessions [1]. If you want to book a session to advertise via the classroom people, please do give me a poke in the ribs. Our own dates are about set now, but you are more than welcome to add a session for friendly. I'm guessing that liasing with the laptop team would be good for both of you. Charles Profitt Yes please include me Charles. I have always been interested in setting up a hardware compatibility database for Ubuntu. The idea of UF is amazing, but the limitation I run into on a regular basis with UF is that only entire systems are shown. Why is this a limitation? How often do you find the exact same system these days? Duplication (in this context a good thing, as it confirms compatibility) is low because models are not exactly the same. From one week to another, one batch to another, a manufacturer can change hardware components making it a new system. Therefore I suggest that if we have a chance to improve UF, we make it component based (USB and PCI ID based).
