Mathias Gug [2008-06-25 19:33 -]:
In the second test case described above, the first occurence of load
the index.html page in browser should be load /apache2-default/ as
 index.html doesn't exist in dapper.

Does that mean, it was just a copypaste error in the bug followup, or
there is actually something wrong in the package?

Same problem, but installing Samba didn't change anything. Editing

the default line of send host-name hostname; was present, if I
changed it to send the actual host name that didn't make any
difference).

It was a copypaste error in the bug followup. There is nothing wrong in
the package as this operational step relates to the existing package in
dapper and is done _before_ the upgrade.

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2008-06-26 Thread Davias
So, just to summarize, we are stuck to ubuntu 7.10?

I would like to upgrade to 8.04 for many reasons, but to risk to find
myself with the same problem as before is unacceptable.

Do you guys think situation will improve by the time of 8.10 ?

Do you also find the following procedure suitable:

1) unplug 1 drive from RAID 1
2) update ubuntu from 7.10 to 8.04 with only one drive in the array
3) verify that everything works; if yes...
4) add the drive as spare and reassemble
5) No, upgrade is not good; then...
6) plug back the old drive and start the machine with that and reassemble the
other as spare...

Help? Suggestions?

TIA

[Bug 237460] Re: Root on iscsi is not supported

2008-06-26 Thread Soren Hansen
Just to fill in a bit more info:

1. The hw-detect problem should be straightforward enough, so I won't go into
much depth about that.
2. The problems involing open-iscsi are many-fold:
2.a. Networking is not configured in initramfs (yet the network is clearly up
since we have loaded the initramfs somehow).
2.a.I Debian fixes this by leeching off of nfsroot's networking code. This is
rather crappy, and doesn't have installer support (but needs it).
2.a.II The open-iscsi package has code (but doesn't ship the binary, IIRC) to
extract the networking info from the PXE firmware (or whereever it resides. I'm
not entirely sure). IIRC, the open-iscsi web page explains how to use this.
2.b. Then the network is up, we should be able to mount the root filesystem by
doing the usual iscsi stuff to get access to the block devices. This might
require some udev support in the initramfs, but I actually don't think so (UUID
based mounting ftw!))
2.c. When the root filesystem is mounted, and hence the network is up, we
should be careful as to not nuke it, when we actually finish booting, but we
should still let ifupdown configure the network properly (to get bonding
running and such).

There's probably more, but that should be enough to get started working
on it.

[Bug 243338] [NEW] wireless network connection lost on samba connect

2008-06-26 Thread Romke Nijkamp
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: smbclient

Symptoms:
When you connect to a samba server over a wireless network the following
happens:
1. The connection to the ap is disconnected.
2. You are not able to connect to the access point anymore.
3. Other access points work just like if nothing happened.
4. This is driver-independent

Steps to reproduce:
1. Connect to a samba share.
2. If i cannot successfully connect to a samba share then the bug does not
occur.

Other Notes:
I am connecting with the connect to server option in gnome.
The server is running samba server on slugosbe 4.8 and is using versions:
samba - 3.0.23c-r1 from openslug/slugosbe feed.

The client is just running the default settings on ubuntu hardy 32-bit and is
using versions:
libsmbclient: 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4
nautilus-share: 0.7.2-0ubuntu5
samba-common: 3.0.28a-1ubuntu4
smbclient: 3.0.28-1ubuntu4
ndiswrapper{
utils version: '1.9', utils version needed by module: '1.9'
module details:
filename:
/lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/ubuntu/misc/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper.ko
version:1.52
vermagic: 2.6.24-16-generic SMP mod_unload
}
and of course a wireless-n network driver WUSB300N from linksys.
Note: i have this problem on many hardware configurations - all the systems
with wi-fi
The ubuntu system does not have any extra repository's enabled except the
defaults.

Expected:
I expected that when you connect to a samba share that wi-fi is unaffected.

  E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
+
+ SRU justification: breaks installation of new packages when particular
+ packages from universe are installed from the previous LTS release
+
+ Does not apply to intrepid, for which direct upgrades from dapper are
+ not supported.
+
+ TEST CASE:
+ 1) Install mysql-server-4.1 and mysql-client-4.1 from dapper.
+ 2) upgrade to hardy.
+ 3) install the mysql-client and mysql-server packages.
+ 4) observe that the upgrade fails with file conflicts.
+ 5) enable hardy-proposed.
+ 6) try again to install the mysql-client and mysql-server packages.
+ 7) observe that the upgrade completes successfully, with removal of the old
mysql-{client,server}-4.1 packages.
+
+ Regression potential: minimal, since the only change is to declare
+ conflicts/replaces with packages that already have these file conflicts
+ in practice. However, the impact of this bug is also lower than I
+ originally thought, because it can't be triggered on a dapper-hardy
+ upgrade itself since the mysql-client and mysql-server metapackages are
+ /already/ pointing at 5.0 in dapper, and already have the undeclared
+ file conflicts. Therefore this SRU does not need to be accepted prior
+ to the 8.04.1 point release.

I have done nothing of the sort.

I asked why you were do determined to make the install less useful by
default. Your reply was something like I'm not very determined, which
doesn't answer my question at all. You want us to remove groff from the
standard install, even though you're going to install it yourself. That
sure sounds to me like you find groff (probably actually man-db) to be
useful (otherwise, why would you be installing it), but you want to not
have it installed by default, thus making the default install less
useful.

I see the usefulness of the minimal install, but this I think this is
getting ridiculous. Ubuntu Server is -- after all -- supposed to be for
human beings, not for embedded systems.

There seems to be a lot of praise for the bare install option in the
installer, and no one has said anything against it.

Well, you seem to think that it's not bare enough?

though, since so many folks are more familiar with it.

I'd like to suggest maybe Desktop and Server should go in different directions
once we have the server seed. Tracepath also uses (abuses depending on how
pedantic one wants to be) UDP instead of ICMP and so there are some real
functional differences (we discussed this at UDS in one of the server
sessions).

It might make sense to push tracepath to the desktop seed and add traceroute
to the server seed so that traceroute is what we provide for servers. For me
it's certainly one of the first things I install on a server after I set it
up.

IIRC, mtr is installed by default and this tool should be enough (I
know I was the one who started traceroute discussion :).

As an die-hard old-school (err, make that, ancient school) 'nix admin
I applaud the idea of trying to keep installs minimal, both for space
 and security reasons.

On the other hand, I recognize the value of having some basic utilities
handy to administer services, test them, debug them, and fix them.
Like many other people, I've got a favorite set that I often find
useful. I try to keep that set restricted to those that I can run
on a low-bandwidth ssh connection, because that's often exactly
what I have to do, and I try to avoid overlapping tools (although
arguably two of my choices, curl and wget, at least partially do so).

My suggestion is that discussion take place over (a) whether it makes
sense or not to bundle a collection of such tools for easy installation,
and (b) what tools might be good candidates for inclusion. Here are
the ones that I've used across a variety of 'nix systems; I don't
claim that this list is the best or most inclusive or anything, it
just happens to be the toolset that I've found lets me deal with
most of the things I've had to deal with.

   curl

We ship wget in standard, which is close enough in functionality that I
don't think two tools make sense.

dig (part of the BIND distribution)

We ship both dig (dnsutils) and host (bind9-host) in standard.

   lslk

This sounds potentially useful, but is in universe and abandoned upstream.
Doesn't lsof provide this functionality?

   lsof
   mutt

Both in standard.

   nmap

This is in main, but we don't install it by default. A scanner probably
doesn't belong in every installation.

   patch

This doesn't seem to be in standard, though I'm somewhat surprised that
nothing in there pulls it in through a dependency.

I think it's a good candidate for the server seed.

   rsync

standard

   screen

This is in desktop, not standard. A good candidate for the server seed.

   surfraw (I *said* I was ancient-school)

No comment. :-)

   tcpdump
   top

Both standard.

   traceroute

We ship tracepath by default, which isn't setuid. traceroute is in main,
though, since so many folks are more familiar with it.

   w3m

Currently in standard, and the subject of this thread.

   wget

Standard.

Ooh. Very shiny. I didn't know about that one.

Bad thing about it:

-rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 46084 2008-03-31 06:32 /usr/bin/mtr

setuid. :(

But traceroute isn't:

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 41644 2007-11-19 17:23 /usr/bin/traceroute.db
