[Bug 543767] Re: ssh logins doesn't show the MOTD when connecting with public key authorisation

2010-06-02 Thread Thierry Carrez
The MOTD is generated through PAM, so the fact that you have UsePAM no
probably affects your results. In the same vein, you have PrintMotd
no... Having the combination of the 2 parameters probably prevents the
motd from being displayed in certain cases.

I'd suggest trying
UsePAM yes
Or
PrintMotd yes

and report what happens.

I am also observed network freeze.
Used virtio drivers for network and for disk too (for WinXP/Win7 x86 guests),
On every guest shutdown and sometimes on guest start-up network connection (to
host and to guests) is interrupted from 2 seconds up to 10 seconds (sometimes
more, it vary).

My case:
Lucid x64 with eucalyptus installed on quad-core Intel CPU (motherboard 'Asus

Running kvm manually as well as using eucalyptus cloud - always same network
freeze occur.

1.6.2 is the version, sadly with some confusion now on my side if this

or the nightly.

Those logs I am echo ing too frequently to give a complete picture,

[Bug 584048] Re: kvm images losing connectivity w/bridged network

2010-06-02 Thread angriukas
Probably network freeze occur because of adding (on guest start-up) created
tun/tap interface to the bridge.
On guest shutdown tun/tap interface are removed from bridge. This add/remove
operation to/from bridge of tap interface causes network freeze in my case. I
have play around by replacing '-net tap' to '-net
tap,ifname=tap.0,script=no,downscript=no' - no freeze occur. But in this case
guest are not connected to the outside world.

I have no idea does network freeze problem related to the virtual
network kernel drivers or is it related to the physical network
interface drivers of the host machine (in my case host if is
'RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller (rev 02)').

Also tested following, run ping:
from LAN to IP of bridged if - time out during freeze
from bridged machine to bridged if - no freeze
from bridged machine to LAN - time out during freeze

I have tested on:
Lucid x64 + latest updates
installed eucalyptus cloud
kernel: 2.6.32-22-server
qemu-kvm: 0.12.3+noroms-0ubuntu9

[Bug 293000] Re: hardy: openssh-server oom_adj can lead to denial of service

2010-06-02 Thread Nathan Catlow
Is there going to be a back port to Hardy 8.04 LTS?

I have had a serious issue with a Virtual Server where the only access
is via SSHD. This resulted in an errant CPAN update downing the entire
box due to all services started via SSH being oom_adj == -17 and
therefore not being killed when out of control.

I cannot risk setting SSHD_OOM_ADJUST=0 in /etc/default/ssh as it is
essential that sshd remains running at all cost.

I have temporarily put echo 0 /proc/self/oom_adj in /etc/bash.bashrc
as a workaround. At least this may stop some potential problems.

This is serious in a Virtual Server environment, where RAM is typically
low and remote access requirement high.

[Bug 482836] Re: Samba shared printers not accessible under Vista and Windows7

2010-06-02 Thread crazydave
Very frustrating for me... I know figured out how to integrate the Cups
Printer in our Active Directory and now the x64 machines are not working
- and no new package for Ubuntu :-/ (not in lucid-backports nor in
maverick)

Someone has info when Ubuntu will release newer packages?!

Cheers,
David

[Bug 585964] Re: VMs won't start after purging apparmor

2010-06-02 Thread Henrik Svensson
Hi!

I got a similar issue on our production environment...
I noticed that after a clean install shutdown and start of domains works BUT
if you restart the libvirt-bin service you can shutdown domains but not start
them again.
If you while in this state purge the libvirt-bin packaga and install it again
(with aptitude)
it works until the next restart of libvirt-bin.
In this case I did not touch apparmor and I did not reboiot the server.

Output from the terminal:

[Bug 333460] Re: [Hardy][LDAP]client authentication broken

2010-06-02 Thread Teej
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all
reported bugs in a timely manner.
There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and
your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a
lot if you could test the current Ubuntu version (10.04). If you can test it,
and it is still an issue, we would appreciate if you could upload updated logs
by running apport-collect bug #, and any other logs that are relevant for
this particular issue.

[Bug 524447] Re: virsh save is very slow

2010-06-02 Thread Anthony Liguori
This actually turns out to be related to dd's default block size. By
default, dd uses a block size of 512. The effect of this is that qemu
fills the pipe buffer very quickly because dd just is submitting very
small requests (that will require a RMW).

If you set an explict block size with dd (via bs=1M), you'll notice a
significant improvement in throughput.

So I think this turns out to be a libvirt issue, not a qemu issue.

[Bug 529008] Re: Should emulate /proc/cpuinfo

2010-06-02 Thread DaveHansen
If you're chroot'ing anyway, then you should have privileged access.
You could probably do this entirely in userspace, without even specially
intercepting the syscalls. When you set up the chroot, just get a copy
of how you want cpuinfo to look, and bind mount it on top of the
existing cpuinfo file:

r...@nimitz:~# egrep cache.size\|^processor /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
cache size : 4096 KB
processor : 1
cache size : 4096 KB
r...@nimitz:~# cat /proc/cpuinfo | perl -pe 's/4096 KB/8192 KB/g' cpuinfo.lie
r...@nimitz:~# mount --bind cpuinfo.lie /proc/cpuinfo
r...@nimitz:~# egrep cache.size\|^processor /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
cache size : 8192 KB
processor : 1
cache size : 8192 KB

Would that work?

[Bug 529008] Re: Should emulate /proc/cpuinfo

2010-06-02 Thread Anthony Liguori
I think the preferred way to do this is just to create a /proc/cpuinfo
file within the root file system. It's impossible for qemu to know
which file is /proc/cpuinfo because you can technically mount procfs
anywhere.

[Bug 587340] Re: otherwise live instance goes deaf connection refused

2010-06-02 Thread waltc
I believe it is 1.6.2

I followed https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEC/PackageInstall to a tee.
The only variation was rather than installing on a 10.4 image of Ubuntu Server
I installed it on Ubuntu Desktop at 10.4.

In order to insure the public addresses given the install script of the
cluster components did not interfere with anything previously in
existence I gave the ip address range 192.168.3.100-192.168.3.130 or
maybe it was 150, I think it was 130 though, so there would be 30
available public IPs.

I do have a VPNC configured but I do not know what magic it does with IP
addresses.

My Netgear router is on 192.168.0.2-192.168.0.254, the netmask is
255.255.0.0

the output from ifconfig is:

vmnet1 and 8 is, apparently, from VMWare Workstation which I use for a
Windows XP image.

According to the instructions for the aforementioned installation from
packages, the range I gave UEC was a unused, isolated range.

The UEC dhcp.conf is:
w...@cor720:~$ cat /var/run/eucalyptus/net/euca-dhcp.conf
# automatically generated config file for DHCP server
default-lease-time 1200;
max-lease-time 1200;

}
}

The single node controller machine was installed from a Ubuntu Server
10.4 cd and is reserved the address 192.168.0.12 on the aforementioned
wireless router. On it I constructed the bridged network precisely to
the instructions given in the url noted above:

interface=eth0
bridge=br0
sudo sed -i s/^iface $interface inet \(.*\)$/iface $interface inet
manual\n\nauto br0\niface $bridge inet \1/ /etc/network/interfaces
sudo tee -a /etc/network/interfaces EOF
bridge_ports $interface

EOF

Feel free to request whatever else I can provide to assist you.
Thanks,
Walt

[Bug 588953] [NEW] Unable to add /dev/md0 as storage pool

2010-06-02 Thread Rusty Burchfield
Public bug reported:

This is the mirror set I want to use as vm storage.
$ ls /dev/md0*
/dev/md0 /dev/md0p1

However, when I try to add it as a storage pool using virt-manager, I receive
this error message.
Error creating pool: Could not start storage pool: cannot open volume
'/dev/md01': No such file or directory

I receive this same error even if I reference the mirror device as
/dev/disk/by-uuid/259b1953-86c5-4d98-994e-79bb80491d8d instead of
/dev/md0.

I /am/ able to start the storage pool if I fdisk the mirror and remove
the partition on it. It is pretty clear that there is something hard-
coded to expect bland partition numbering which is not guaranteed.

This command is a workaround. However, I don't expect it to persist across
reboots (without some /etc/rc.local action) and it is pretty lame. :(
$ sudo ln -s md0p1 /dev/md01

[Bug 583933] Re: test results in php5-common are more than 1 MiB larger than last upload

2010-06-02 Thread Clint Byrum
It appears that the tests failed for some reason in 5.3.2-1ubuntu4.2,
but were successful again in 5.3.2-1ubuntu5, as the file is the right
size.

However, the bug is not fixed, as the failed tests should have failed
the build.

I believe it has to do with piping the output of the tests to tee,
therefore missing the exit code and not failing the tests... patch
forthcoming.

Re: Server Support

2010-06-02 Thread Thierry Carrez
Mathias Gug wrote:
In my case, actually having those unanswered questions kind of prevent
me from using the channel for random development chat. I don't feel like
appearing as an insensitive developer that continues his work and jokes
with co-workers while people beg for help on the channel. And most of
the time I could help them, if only I had the free time[tm] to do so.

I understand that feeling. One perspective could be to set the expectations
right: answers given in the channel are done on a best effort basis. And one
should not be offended if their questions aren't answered even if people are
 chatting in the channel.

If I'm the only one bothered by this, I have no issue keeping the status
quo.

 The current help factoids states:

Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line
and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone
knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)

How about splitting out the help factoid to include a statement about setting
 the expectations right:

Thanks for stopping by and ask for help. We'll try to help you out on a best
effort basis. If anyone knows the answer they will probably reply. If you
 have
a serious problem you may wanna opt for another support option available at
   http://www.ubuntu.com/support/.

When someone asks a question one could always use the help factoid to set
 their
 expectations right.

Maybe the channel topic should be updated to reflect that development is
the main thing we discuss on this channel ? Currently it shows:

Ubuntu Server discussion and support | For general (not server specific)
support visit #ubuntu | IRC Guidelines:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IrcGuidelines | Get involved:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/GettingInvolved | Be patient. Don't
ask to ask, just ask. | Docs and resources:
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/

How about:

Ubuntu Server development, discussion and support | For general (not
server specific) questions visit #ubuntu | Get involved:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam/GettingInvolved | Be patient. Don't
ask to ask, just ask. | Docs and resources:

Then it wouldn't feel so awkward to ignore support questions to discuss
development issues.

Server Team 20100601 meeting minutes

2010-06-02 Thread Thierry Carrez
Hi,

Here are the minutes of meeting. They can also be found online with the
irc logs here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeetingLogs/Server/20100601.

Action points from the last meeting

 * sommer to try to move server doc spec to Ubuntu specs: DONE
 * ttx to document (or delegate documentation of ) package stack names: DONE

 Alpha1 milestone

The Alpha1 milestone will be released Thursday. Please participate to
Server ISO testing[1] to get as much coverage as we can. Current known
issues include an oversized CD, due to bug 587893. smoser will publish
cloud images soon. Between now and Alpha1 we are in soft freeze and
should not upload major changes that could impact negatively the milestone.

ACTION: all to run ISO testing coverage on alpha1

ACTION: smoser to ensure cloud images make it to the alpha1 iso tracker

[1] http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/qatracker/build/ubuntuserver/all

 Alpha2 subcycle status

The Canonical team tracks progress on their specs here[2]. Please
remember to keep your work items and Status: line updated in the
blueprints, at least once per week before Monday EOB. See the
WorkItemsHowto for more info. ttx will reset the trends line tomorrow to
something more useful to track progress.

server-maverick-cloud-kernel-upgrades needs some attention since there
is some work separation between smoser and jjohansen, and a more
detailed work items plan is desired.

On the community side, Mail cluster stack look in great shape. jib
asked to seperate items out for before after feature freeze to help
track things. The doc spec is also in good shape.

ACTION: smoser to coordinate with jjohansen and ttx to provide a more
detailed work item overview for server-maverick-cloud-kernel-upgrades

[2]
http://people.canonical.com/~pitti/workitems/maverick/canonical-server-maverick-alpha-2.html

Weekly Updates Questions for the QA Team

hggdh verified bug 565101, which should go to -updates as soon as
possible. Additionally, he also did a quick test of bug 586134, and
seems to work with 512 loop devices configured. There might be a delay
in the Eucalyptus SRU due to a potential regression on bug 566793.

Weekly Updates Questions for the Kernel Team

jjohansen is in vacation, so no progress yet on pv-ops. SpamapS
mentioned that the proposed PTRACE changes would also affect negatively
the ops population, and will chime in on the thread to make that concern
known.

Weekly Updates Questions for the Documentation Team

Lucid serverguide PDF is available on h.u.c. For next week's meeting,
sommer will present new sections for which the doc team will need input
from the server team.

ACTION: sommer to present list of sections that need input from server team

 Papercuts selection for Alpha2 subcycle

We currently have 14 bugs nominated[3] for a desired total of 16
targets, so choosing between them should be easy. Last-minute
nominations can still occur since ttx will proceed with formal selection
tomorrow morning. You can also start assigning yourself to those you're
interested in.

[3] http://tinyurl.com/papercuts-nominations

 Weekly SRU review

SRU nominations were reviewed. The tracker for the new SRU process is
under work, with an early view accessible at
http://people.canonical.com/~chucks/SRUTracker/

 Open Discussion

server-maverick-openldap-dit was reviewed and approved. EtienneG brought
up the question of which iSCSI target is being chosen for main/UEC: tgt
is the answer, and ccheney will work on the MIR, and zul on the
upstartification.

Agree on next meeting date and time

Next meeting will be on Tuesday, June 8th at 18:00 UTC in #ubuntu-meeting.

Server papercuts: Alpha2 round bugfixing started

2010-06-02 Thread Thierry Carrez
Hello everyone,

The nomination period for the Alpha2 round of Server papercuts is now
closed, and the following 14 bugs have been selected:

https://launchpad.net/server-papercuts/+milestone/maverick-alpha-2

The goal is to close all those bugs by June 28th ! Those should all be
straightforward and easy to fix bugs, so they are a great way to get
started with Ubuntu Server development. Feel free to assign yourself the
bugs you are interested in, and to ask for help on the #ubuntu-server
IRC channel.

Note that you can still nominate Server papercuts for the next round
(Alpha3 round, nomination ends on June 27th).

Cheers, and happy bugfixing :)

In my case, actually having those unanswered questions kind of prevent
me from using the channel for random development chat. I don't feel like
appearing as an insensitive developer that continues his work and jokes

the time I could help them, if only I had the free time[tm] to do so.

Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE
 line
and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If
 anyone
knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)

How about splitting out the help factoid to include a statement about setting
 the expectations right:

Thanks for stopping by and ask for help. We'll try to help you out on a
 best
effort basis. If anyone knows the answer they will probably reply. If you
 have
a serious problem you may wanna opt for another support option available
 at
   http://www.ubuntu.com/support/.

| Docs and resources:
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/

Then it wouldn't feel so awkward to ignore support questions to discuss
development issues.

I'm fine with that.

No guest network with KVM using vmbuilder

2010-06-02 Thread Walter Souto
Hi, I hope I'm not asking something dummy, anyway...

So, I'd use vmbuilder to create a VM like this:

sudo vmbuilder kvm ubuntu \
--suite lucid --flavour virtual --arch amd64 -o -v \
--libvirt qemu:///system \
--cpus 1 --mem 256 \
--rootsize 8192 --swapsize 2048 \
--hostname vm101 \
--ip 10.0.3.11 --mask 255.255.252.0 --net 10.0.0.0 --bcast 10.0.3.255 \
--gw 10.0.3.254 --dns 10.0.3.254 --bridge br0 \
--user sysadmin --name SysAdmin --pass 656667 \
--addpkg acpid \
--addpkg openssh-server \
--mirror http://ironman:/ubuntu \
--raw /dev/vgvm/lvm01

The host (lucid) has bridge br0 configured and forwarding with
10.0.0.1 / 255.255.252.0. The configurations seems to be ok:

domain type='kvm'
  namevm101/name
  uuid43cf30ee-1d29-2c34-ebda-f16b9c2472bc/uuid
  memory262144/memory
  currentMemory262144/currentMemory
  vcpu1/vcpu
  os
type arch='x86_64' machine='pc-0.12'hvm/type
boot dev='hd'/
  /os
  features
acpi/
  /features
  clock offset='utc'/
  on_poweroffdestroy/on_poweroff
  on_rebootrestart/on_reboot
  on_crashdestroy/on_crash
  devices
emulator/usr/bin/kvm/emulator
disk type='file' device='disk'
  source file='/dev/vgvm/lvm01'/
  target dev='hda' bus='ide'/
/disk
interface type='bridge'
  mac address='52:54:00:19:fd:7c'/
  source bridge='br0'/
  target dev='vnet0'/
  model type='virtio'/
/interface
input type='mouse' bus='ps2'/
graphics type='vnc' port='-1' autoport='yes' listen='127.0.0.1'/
video
  model type='cirrus' vram='9216' heads='1'/
/video
  /devices
  seclabel type='dynamic' model='apparmor'/
/domain

I can't connect to the machine via SSH with the given IP. I can't ping
too. I have no clue about what can be wrong. I did some research on
this list but no lucky...

TIA,

Walter.

Re: Ubuntu Server update for Maverick Meerkat

2010-06-02 Thread Gustavo Niemeyer
Hi Jos,

with the Maverick cycle kicking off and UDS-M just behind
us, it's time to take a look at what's in store for the next
release of Ubuntu Server. In broad strokes, these will be
 the likely topics:

Are the LXC conversations a subtopic in one of those items, or should
it be included as a new topic?
