[Bug 745522] [NEW] ucf prompt on server-tasks upgrade profile

2011-03-30 Thread Michael Vogt
Public bug reported:

On a manual upgrade from a server install (with all tasks instaleld) I
get a ucf conffile prompt about /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf

This is a automatically installed test machine, so the config was not
modified by me manually and we should not have this prompt.

The diff is
- protocols = imap imaps pop3 pop3s
+ protocols = none
and sendmail path. I attach a screenshot of the VM as well.

[Bug 672177] Re: libc6 upgrade causes umount to fail on shutdown because init cannot be restarted

2011-03-30 Thread Martin Pitt
Some nitpicks about the patch:

 - patch ordering in series
 - target is {lucid,maverick}-proposed
 - changelog missing bug references.
 - version 2.87dsf-4ubuntu18 already exists in maverick, can't be used for
lucid-updates
 - maverick debdiff doesn't apply, as it wasn't done against -updates.

I corrected these and uploaded to l/m-proposed. Unsubscribing sponsors.

[Bug 745946] [NEW] cloud-final job did not run

2011-03-30 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cloud-init

In natty beta-1 testing, we had 2 occurrences where it appears the
upstart job cloud-final did not run after 15 minutes of waiting.

This occurred once on eu-west-1 and ap-southeast-1. both were m1.small (i386).
I will attach the console output of each. Note, that in that console output,
the '[]' is from the 'timezone' cloud-config plugin. This gives us info that
cloud-init-config had gotten past the 'apt-update-upgrade' plugin.

cloud-config upstart job has:
start on (filesystem and started rsyslog)

cloud-config-final upstart job has:
start on (stopped rc RUNLEVEL=[2345] and stopped cloud-config)

I had seen this recently on a lucid instance, that caused a publish failure

[Bug 745930] Re: cloud-init timeout waiting for metadata service on EC2

2011-03-30 Thread Scott Moser
This only occurred once in todays beta-1 testing. I have seen it on
very rare occasion, as noted above.

I started digging a bit through my build logs. The daily build process
launches an m1.large instance in each region to facilitate populating
EBS root instances. On 2011-03-03, I updated the utility instances that
we use to the latest lucid refreshed version (ebs/ubuntu-
lucid-10.04-amd64-server-20110201.1), so this first info represents data
only from that date.

- 66 build logs (17 failed for one reason or another)
- 298 instances launched from 2011-03-03 to 2011-03-30.
- 9 of 298 instances could not be reached via ssh
- 3 of those 9 instances were due to timeout on metadata service these were:
  2011-03-26 us-west-1 maverick-desktop-uec-20110326
  2011-03-28 us-west-1 natty-server-uec-20110328
  2011-03-29 us-west-1 lucid-server-uec-20110329

So, 298 instances launched, 3 failures on metadata service. All of
those in us-west-1 and occurred in the last 5 days.

Going back further, though all the logs I have since ~ 2010-03-16
- 704 build logs
- 2620 instances launched
- 28 failed to have elastic IP associated and be reached via ssh.
- 4 TOTAL have messages in console suggesting time out on metadata service
  2011-03-01 us-east-1 lucid-server-uec-20110301
  2011-03-26 us-west-1 maverick-desktop-uec-20110326
  2011-03-28 us-west-1 natty-server-uec-20110328
  2011-03-29 us-west-1 lucid-server-uec-20110329

2011-03-30 Thread Clint Byrum
jdiasn, This is an issue with your configuration file. You'll need to
read squid's manual (there is a lot of help in the squid.conf itself) to
know how its supposed to work. The error message says that on line 176
there's an error, so try fixing that line.

[Bug 717166] Re: Broken with v4 isc-dhcp-server in Natty

2011-03-30 Thread Daniel Nurmi
All,

I think I've found the problem all! So, looking at:

bzr branch lp:ubuntu/isc-dhcp

1.) the patch I've supplied is being placed at the end of the '00list' file in
debian/patches. not a problem normally i suspect, however:
2.) the patch is not present in the actual code that is being used when I try
to build a package using 'bzr bd'. the reason for this is:
3.) in debian/rules file, there is a line:

dpatch deapply-until dhcp-4.1.0-ldap-code

which removes the patch since it is listed after 'dhcp-4.1.0-ldap-code' in
'00list'. The fix is:
4.) put the 'multi-ip-addr-per-if' list right after the 'dhclient-more-debug'
line in '00list' and rebuild.

I just went through this process on my natty box, installed the
resulting isc-dhcp-server deb, and ran an instance or two through
eucalyptus without problem. I think thats probably it (!)

thanks all
-dan

[Bug 561750] Re: squid starts and stops immediately (after upgrade from karmic to lucid)

2011-03-30 Thread Clint Byrum
D J, I would agree with you that -D should be in the default args for
squid. I'm not sure why it was removed, but this counts as a regression
as in karmic -D would allow squid to start without a valid network
connection.

Marking as regression-release, and changing back to Triaged, as I don't
feel that the bug is actually fixed completely by changing restart to
reload. We also need to add -D back into the default squid arguments.

I note that the current debian unstable package in effect does the same
thing, through its use of do_start which calls start-stop-daemon with
the --retry option.

Can anyone confirm they have seen this bug?

I think it is probably a good idea to follow the bug submitter's
proposal anyway, but am afraid that without confirmation we wont' be
able to get SRU approval.

Re: [Bug 743858] Re: sshd not appending to /var/log/btmp

2011-03-30 Thread Colin Watson
Well, I was the one who turned that off, but I think we should keep this
bug open because the situation has changed. /var/log/btmp was mode 0664
in Debian when I made that change. Now, in Ubuntu (and possibly in
Debian, I haven't checked), it's mode 0660. This suggests to me that we
could re-enable the feature and just check for non-world-readability.

[Bug 745930] Re: cloud-init timeout waiting for metadata service on EC2

2011-03-30 Thread Eric Hammond
In my experience in 2008-2009, just because networking is up on an EC2
instance does not mean that 169.254.169.254 is going to accept
connections and requests for meta-data and user-data. You need to wait
for this to become available. I had code to do this in Ubuntu AMIs I
built back then.

perl -MIO::Socket::INET -e 'until(new
IO::Socket::INET(169.254.169.254:80)){sleep 1}'

I used to think I was waiting for networking to come up, but it became
clear that the meta-data service was not listening even some times when
networking was working and I had a local IP address on the instance.

passwords with XXX) and give the full command line. Your vm.cfg has
'templates = ../vmbuilder' - what is in that directory?

On second glance, cloud-init may actually be retrying the connection and

[Bug 745930] Re: cloud-init timeout waiting for metadata service on EC2

2011-03-30 Thread Scott Moser
Well, if you lok at the attached console logs, you can see that cloud-
init is retrying. In lucid, we retried 100 times with a increasing back
off, resulting in 17 minutes or so of trying. The build scripts gave up
after 5 minutes.

In natty (both to reduce the pain if cloud-init was installed outside of
EC2, and because i had extreme amounts of data -- 2000+ instances that
waiting did not help), I reduced that timeout significantly, but made it
configurable in /etc/cloud/cloud.cfg.

From the console logs attached:
-- lucid --
  cloud-init running: Sun, 27 Mar 2011 10:14:09 +. up 10.57 seconds
  waiting for metadata service at
http://169.254.169.254/2009-04-04/meta-data/instance-id
  10:14:11 [ 1/100]: url error [timed out]
  ...
10:16:56 [31/100]: url error [timed out]

-- natty --
  cloud-init start running: Wed, 30 Mar 2011 17:01:16 +. up 10.08 seconds
  2011-03-30 17:01:18,555 - DataSourceEc2.py[WARNING]: waiting for metadata
service at http://169.254.169.254/2009-04-04/meta-data/instance-id
  2011-03-30 17:01:18,555 - DataSourceEc2.py[WARNING]: 17:01:18 [ 1/30]: url
error [timed out]
  ...
  011-03-30 17:03:55,735 - DataSourceEc2.py[WARNING]: 17:03:55 [30/30]: url
error [timed out]
  2011-03-30 17:04:01,742 - DataSourceEc2.py[CRITICAL]: giving up on md after
165 seconds

So, at the point at which the build publishing scripts gave up, cloud-init had
been re-trying (after network had already come up) for 2 minutes and 35
seconds. In the natty test, it gave up after 2 minutes 45 seconds of trying.

If the metadata service isn't up 3 minutes after the instance is booted,
then there is a bug in the platform, expecting an instance to wait 3
minutes is not acceptable.

As always, look into the log files or start the daemon in stand-alone mode,
i.e. not forking and with a lot of debugging output.

My problem is solved as I mentioned in my previous message that there
were 2 extra files with name apache present in

want to investigate this issue further as why did I needed to do this
? What was the reason that another file apache2.2. was present in
/etc/init.d and using that had worked and not /etc/init.d/apache2 .
My guess is some update might have over written (but I am not having
any facts to support my argument)
let me know what do I investigate ?Or some one can point to some thing
by looking at any other log even I will post.
Because this over writing or creation of files did not happened in the

Hmm since apache was not able to start as daemon
so the requests never reached my web server.
Which I had verified in Apache log as I checked openitup.in I did not
saw any request being logged in /var/log/apache2 access.log or
error.log hence I had pasted the /var/log/apt/*

how ever there are 3-4 lines on this server in question which were
repetition of following

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library
'/usr/lib/php5/20090626/pdo_mysql.so' -
/usr/lib/php5/20090626/pdo_mysql.so: cannot open shared object file:
No such file or directory in Unknown on line 0

I am not using any mysql on this machine so this line should not be
present or be a reason for the problem
(correct me if I am wrong)

I also checked the daemon.log
http://pastebin.com/c64Vhk4u
could not find any thing suspicious for creation of a different
version of /etc/init.d/apache to /etc/init.d/apache2.2

So I had pasted the apt logs.

Re: [Oneiric-Topic] Server Boot

2011-03-30 Thread Serge E. Hallyn
Quoting Scott Kitterman (ubu...@kitterman.com):
There was a lot of discussion around improving the server boot experience
before the UDS-M. A number of people expressed interest in seeing more
 useful
diagnostic information during boot. Others expressed concerns with boot
reliability on the more complex hardware typically found in servers.

How are we doing on this? Personally, I can't remember the last time I
rebooted a server and it wasn't via SSH and the hardware I use is the sort
there were problems with. Are these still issues for the Ubuntu Server
 community?

 Scott K

I think right now these issues are oveshadowed by the fact that a
great deal of server software is not yet upstartified. I think that
needs to be addressed for O.

Since mysql is used by desktop applications we'll need to make sure that's
supported there as well. We don't want to get into another mess like we did
with having to support 5.0 and 5.1 (to some degree) in Main.

I'm very interested in postgresql-9.0, but that should just happen since it's
in Debian already and postgresql supports parallel installation of multiple
versions. The only question is if it should be the version in Main starting
in O or P. I think there are some packaging complications if the highest
version in the archive isn't the one in Main (pitti would know for sure).

[Oneiric-Topic] user namespaces

2011-03-30 Thread Serge E. Hallyn
The natty cycle was quite productive in terms of user namespace work. The
overall development plan is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UserNamespace. For
the Oneiric cycle I think a reasonable goal is to complete the conversion
of all capable() and uid comparisons to do appropriate user namespace
comparisons, and the ability for a full filesystem to be owned by a user
namespace. If things go well, we may also start uid mapping - which would
just about complete the kernel part of user namespace.

I do not have much to contribute to the technical discussion around Xen
dom0. All I can say is that, in my work with corporate end-users, it's
a FAQ; seems like Xen is entrenched in a lot of organisations.
Maintaining and supporting a dom0 kernel would make the life of these
organisations much easier, and even open new opportunities for Ubuntu in

[Oneiric-Topic] SRU Process

2011-03-30 Thread Chuck Short
Hi,

I do not have the statistics in front of me, but I believe most of
users are using LTS releases of Ubuntu. The policy of cherrypicking
fixes from the development releases does not scale in my opinon. We
should offer PPAs for users who want to use a new version of for
example Apache. Or go through the list of packages we support and see
if we can get it to qualify as a micro release update.

Since mysql is used by desktop applications we'll need to make sure
that's supported there as well.  We don't want to get into another mess
like we did with having to support 5.0 and 5.1 (to some degree) in Main.

I'm very interested in postgresql-9.0, but that should just happen since
it's in Debian already and postgresql supports parallel installation of
multiple versions.  The only question is if it should be the version in
Main starting in O or P.  I think there are some packaging complications
if the highest version in the archive isn't the one in Main (pitti would
  know for sure).

Isn't it time to use mariadb instead of mysql?

There's more than one fork out there.  It would probably be useful to have a
discussion about what mysql variant will be most supportable for LTS and move
towards that in the oneiric timeframe.  I think that deserves a spec of it's
 own.

 Scott K

I agree, if the community is going to want to move away from mysql to
one of the variants, the time is now to discuss which one would be
best.

[Oneiric-Topic] Further PowerNap Improvements

2011-03-30 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Hi All,

During the Natty release cycle, PowerNap was improved in two main aspects:
 - Monitoring enhancements, adding the capability to monitor different
components such as Input, Network Activity and Application activity to
correctly determine the idled state of the machine.
 - New Power Saving method, consisting on using pm-powersave and providing a
few additional scripts.

However, now. I'd like to see a Client/Server implementation approach of
PowerNap on which things occur as follows:
 - Client auto-registration to a PowerNap server
 - PowerNap server tracking the status of a PowerNap client in the network.
 - PowerNap server being able to schedule wakeups-sleeps for any of the
clients.
 - PowerNap server being able to monitor network to auto wakeup monitored
machines (i.e. ARP Monitor)
 - API like base implementation to be able to integrate it to
other applications, (i.e. Landscape.)

Cheers,

Agreed. Some mechanism to modularize the distribution is in order.
From an end-user perspective, it does no make any sense that you need to
upgrade the OS to run a new version of Apache. I understand why we are
doing this from the distribution perspective, and I know a lot of people
are very attached to the way things are being done now, but it really
baffles people coming to Ubuntu from other platforms at time.

mdz blogged about this a while ago:

http://mdzlog.alcor.net/2010/07/06/weve-packaged-all-of-the-free-software-what-now/

Decoupling certain key software from the distribution so that it does
not have to be upgraded in lockstep would be a start. I would really
like to discuss that at the UDS; count me in.

The server CD is full. I think a lot of I'd like to add type discussions

I think that unless we split cloud/server as I suggested in a different topic

It's been an ongoing topic for while. I think we really have the

This is something I've wanted for a while. I know backports exist, but
they're usually pretty limited. I'd really like to see more things
backported. Like the previous poster stated, there's no reason to
upgrade the entire OS if all we want is say a newer apache or nginx or

How are packages being selected for backports currently?

I've triaged a few bugs where issues have been seen in pure IPv6
environments where IPv4 is completely disabled; I'm uncomfortable about
whether this is really a supported configuration and should this type of
configuration be covered in the health check?

Even if it's not formally 'supported' we need to treat these as valid bugs as
this will, over time, be an increasingly common configuration. I have one
server running in a data center with native IPv6 and the only issue I ran into
so far is the need to add an IPv6 localhost by hand (this should at least ben
done by the installer on new installs, but I doubt it should be done for
upgrades).

This is something I have been working on, and that I was going to write
a blueprint for. Feel free to do so yourself, though!

From my notes, here are the stuff that needs some work:

- d-i/netcfg support: right now, AFAIK (I have to check that), you
cannot install an IPv6-only Ubuntu host.

- netboot installation: PXE relies on IPv4 DHCP and TFTP. Are there any
IPv6 alternatives, and do we need to do anything special to support
these? (there probably aren't, sadly)

- DHCPv6: I believe we are going to get this for free with ISC dhcp v4,
but it's worth checking.

- Network Manager: reportedly, it will work with IPv6, but it cannot be
made IPv6-only. That is important in certain use-case. We need to
check that.

- NFS over IPv6 is currently DOA in lucid (notably, missing kernel
support in some place). Not sure about the status of natty. This will
need some serious testing.

- What about IPv6 support in Eucalyptus and OpenStack?

- It would be interesting to check that the network API of the various
language interpreter we ship (Python, Perl, etc) are IPv6-ready.

- In general, IPv6 will need to be integrated into our QA test-suite.

Some of the above are really topics for the foundation team, I
understand that. It even spills into desktop. I think IPv6 enablement
has to be a cross-team effort.
