[Bug 993660] Re: package samba-common 2:3.5.8~dfsg-1ubuntu2.4 failed to install/upgrade: unable to open '/etc/dhcp3/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/samba.dpkg-new': Too many levels of symbolic links

2013-02-20 Thread SeanBoran
I came accross this ina similar situation.
When installing samba-common:

dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/samba-common_2%3a3.6.3-2ubuntu2.3_all.deb (--unpack):
unable to open '/etc/dhcp3/dhclient-enter-hooks.d/samba.dpkg-new': No such
file or directory

In my case /etc/dhcp3 was a link to /etc/dhcp, because it was needed for Vmware
customisations scripts:
http://javierin.com/2012/09/05/template-customization-para-debian-squeeze-en-vsphere-5-0u1/

The samba package just cannot handle that at all though.
Removing the link, allows samba to install:
rm /etc/dhcp3
(or copying the directory as noted above).
Howver this is not nice at all, having two directories for dhcp and one or the
other might be read depending on circumstances.

So to me this is bug in the samba packaging.
== Could this issue be re-opend please and the samba packaing examined?

[Bug 1130599] [NEW] make openvpn's net-tools dependency optional

2013-02-20 Thread Max
Public bug reported:

The net-tools package (provides ifconfig etc) is deprecated on GNU/Linux for
decades already in favor of iproute2.
Openvpn is capable to work with iproute2 if compiled with ./configure

iproute2 instead of net-tools.

[Bug 1130232] Re: Implement GenericIpAddressField in MAAS rather than django.

2013-02-20 Thread Raphaël Badin
I'm not sure fixing this in the packaging is the right solution here.
If we have a patch to add the new classes (plural, there is the field
model and the form model), then we will have to update the upstream code
to match that (everywhere where it's imported plus in all the migration
files where it's used). This mean that the packaging for Quantal (which
will also use the same 1.2 upstream version) will have to contain that
patch too. This leads me to the conclusion that changing this upstream
is probably better. This would mean embedding a copy of the needed
classes in our code and using them instead of the ones provided by
Django.

Also, if we keep trunk as is, we will have a problem when upgrading from
quantal to raring because one version will use the version of the field
in Django and the other our own copy. A solution would be to have a DB
migration in raring but, for reasons we already discussed (see the dev
ml), we don't want the DB migrations to diverge like that. So the
solution would be to keep using own version of the field (i.e. something
like maasserver.generipfield.GenericIPAddressField), which, in trunk,
could be a simple copy (as in
GenericIPAddressField=django.db.models.fields.GenericIPAddressField) of
the version in Django.

[Bug 653405] Re: rabbitmq-server fails to start if hostname is unresolvable or has changed since first starting

2013-02-20 Thread shahar
In case it's relevant here:

I installed rabbitmq today (2013-02-20).
 - My machine's hostname is resolved also before installation, and it didn't
change since the server was first installed few days ago.
 - in any case, i revised my /etc/hosts - it seems to be 100% ok (just in case)
 - i'm on Ubuntu 12.04, 64bit.
 - it's hosted inside VirtualBox
 - The log files mentioned in the files are empty (0 bytes)
 - erl_crash.dump is also empty.
 - I repeated the installation process (apt-get remove, autoremove, clean,
autoclean, and then install) , to no avail.

after installation i (re)tried to start the server manually:
# service rabbitmq-server start
Starting rabbitmq-server: FAILED - check /var/log/rabbitmq/startup_{log, _err}
rabbitmq-server.
#

according to someone here, i ran rabbitmqctl status, and got all funny
messages:

still unresolved, and no workaround found.
it's probably another misreported bug, and i'm still looking for solutions.

[Bug 1130232] Re: Implement GenericIpAddressField in MAAS rather than django.

2013-02-20 Thread Raphaël Badin
Julian suggested another way to do this: carry a packaging patch with
the field and the changes required to the source to use it. My main
concern is that this field (as a string
'django.db.models.fields.GenericIPAddressField') is used by South in the
migration code and, although this solution is a bit simpler than the one
I suggested, we need to make sure it will work and the upgrade from a
patched version to an non-patched version will work.

Re: [Bug 1130232] Re: Implement GenericIpAddressField in MAAS rather than django.

2013-02-20 Thread Dave Walker
Does it make sense to monkey patch if django required version?

Either way, this shouldn't be solved in packaging.. it's core support
needed in MAAS for backwards compatibility.

Thanks.

Does it make sense to monkey patch if django required version?

It's also a possibility, but given the way Django plays with imports,
this could be a dangerous game.

Either way, this shouldn't be solved in packaging.. it's core support
needed in MAAS for backwards compatibility.

Fixing it in the packaging would be very similar to what was done in
https://code.launchpad.net/~andreserl/maas/precise.sru.jslibs/+merge/146252
for ths js libs we can't SRU in precise though.

2013-02-20 Thread James Troup
Yeah, that's not going to happen. The debug log contains private and
sensitive information.

If a standalone test case is a hard requirement, I can probably work
something up, but it seems like an unnecessarily high bar to set for a
bug report which gives pretty explicit symptoms and log info that
demonstrates what I'm saying.

You'll notice that JuJu overrides PYTHONPATH with 2.7 paths when lxc-ls is a

This in turn causes the python interpreter to fail as can be seen below:

So the bug is actually in juju which doesn't pass a clean environment to the

On 02/20/2013 03:54 PM, Dave Walker wrote:
Does it make sense to monkey patch if django required version?

It's also a possibility, but given the way Django plays with imports,
this could be a dangerous game.

That being said, the monkey patch solution is appealing because it means
we continue to import the field from django.db.models.fields and we use
'django.db.models.fields.GenericIPAddressField' in the migrations in 1.2
*and* in trunk, thus avoiding all the upgrade issues.

By making sure the monkey patching code is called at the top of the
src/maasserver/models/__init__.py file (which is imported by Django at
start up time), it seems we can solve the import issue.

I've created a patch that does that and includes the
GenericIPAddressField (plus all the required utility methods):
http://paste.ubuntu.com/1691108/

Testing against a Django package without the genericipaddressfield.diff
patch, I get the entire test suite to pass. Now I need to test the
created package because we've seen that the import pattern differs
when a Django application is loaded in a wsgi container.

[Bug 1130467] Re: 'g' argument in combination with 'e' causes Dial() to return to 'h' extension in a different context

2013-02-20 Thread James Troup
*sigh*, fine. Here is an example config, steps with which to
reproduce and messages output with debug turned all the way up.

| apt-get install asterisk sip-tester
|
| From the example-config.tar.gz copy into /etc/asterisk/:
|
| * asterisk.conf - set verbose and debug to 10
| * extensions.conf - dummy extensions to demonstrate problem
| * logger.conf - enable logging of debug and verbose messages
| * modules.conf - don't load AEL or Lua extensions (not strictly necessary)
| * sip.conf - two dummy users, one for sipp and for a SIP UA
|
| # /etc/init.d/asterisk stop
| # rm /var/log/asterisk/messages
| # /etc/init.d/asterisk start
|
| Configure SIP UA (e.g. empathy) to register to local asterisk server.
|
| $ sipp -i 127.0.0.1 -d 100 -s 5550 -m 1 -sn uac -timeout 30 127.0.0.1
|
| Answer the call in SIP UA and hang up.
|
| Notice in asterisk console output:
|
| -- Executing [h@macro-test-e-only:1] NoOp(SIP/sipp-, I'm in
h@macro-test and TESTVAR is foo) in new stack
|
| $ sipp -i 127.0.0.1 -d 100 -s -m 1 -sn uac -timeout 30 127.0.0.1

Good point, that's another argument in favor of the monkey patch
 solution.

Sadly I think it's the only viable solution :(

[Bug 988173] Re: maas-import-isos fails

2013-02-20 Thread Tobeus
I know this is almost a year old since the status change, but it would
be nice to have that as a hint in the error message if that is possible
to insert as com4 suggested. Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in.
Thanks for the tip on the fix though! Worked like a charm after fixing
the IP.

Do people have a view about whether this should apply to ~ubuntu-dev

grounds that ubuntu-docs is in main, as are the packages that make up
the subject matter of the serverguide, so this seems consistent, and
for the reason given by Scott says there is an implicit trust that the
project gives core-devs.

I think it should be ~ubuntu-core-dev generally and perhaps ~ubuntu-desktop
and ~kubuntu-dev (and others similarly) for their respective docs. I do not
think it should be ~ubuntu-dev because it includes people with PPU (per
package upload rights) who may have little familiarity with broader Ubuntu
processes and requirements.

Thanks for being open to the change. I agree submitting a merge proposal is
not THAT much more work, but, at least for me, it's enough more that I don't
do it.

rdiff-backup is it best openSource continous backup solution?

2013-02-20 Thread Rajeev Prasad
Gurus,

need words of wisdom adn experiecne on backup solution for my ub server 1204 LTS

a quick seacrh produced many results and this continous backup
solution(rdiff-backup).

is rdiff-backup currently managed?

need something which:

1. actively managed/devloped. (dont want to commit to dead end/dead/dying
software)

2. does continous backups.
3. backup atleast last 3 versions of a file/folder.
4. backup to network drive.
5. backup other connected PCs, Macs and Unix hosts.
6. backup my complete LAMP ubuntu server with other modules/apps installed. (so
that with one restore operation I can get my crashed server back up to a
working status).

kindly suggest the best option out there. command line is fine.

Re: rdiff-backup is it best openSource continous backup solution?

2013-02-20 Thread Tyler J. Wagner
I saw your post to the BackupPC user list. I prefer BackupPC, but it's not
ideal for bare-metal restore. It's ideal for whoops, undelete, and as
poor-man's version control. It can be used for bare-metal restore as well,
but I recommend installing a base OS from the install media, then restoring
over that using BackupPC_tarCreate at the CLI. If you want to continue this
discussion, please take it to the BackupPC user list.

Otherwise, rdiff-backup is great, supported, and works fine. Rsync + diff,
what's not to love?

I personally use rsync to a LUKS-encrypted removable drive once a month or
so, plus BackupPC to get the dailies. I use BackupPC at home and at my
company, where we have ~70 Linux servers and workstations, and 5 Windows
PCs, all safely backed up for the past 3 months, to just 4 TB.

Re: rdiff-backup is it best openSource continous backup solution?

2013-02-20 Thread Rajeev Prasad
Tyler,

I really appreciate the gentleness of responding to the both questions.

I realized that a complete snapshot of the system (my requirement #6), which
can be restored in one go (all OS/Apps/data etc.) is best done using software
like clonezilla (I am looking at clonezilla right now).

the other part of my requirment seem to be met by backuppc. I found the
software after i sent the original email to this list. (So I opened my account
on backuppc and will ask future quest on the product there).

I liked rdiff-backup when i saw it first time, but when i saw last release was
in 2009. I wanted to be sure, if there is devolpment being done on it (say for
another LTS release if any FS changes comes along etc.). So I asked if active
devlopment is happenign on it or not.

with kind regards.
Rajeev

For all OS/Apps/Data, you need only a tool that copies files and your OS
install media. Rsync does that just fine. Clonezilla can also copy
partitions, LVM, and other block-level data structures.

From the website, it doesn't appear to be in active development. There are
plenty of GUI tools that use it underneath.

Raring bind 9.9.2.dfsg.P1-2

2013-02-20 Thread Chuck Peters
I have seen a number of recommendations to use bind 9.9 rather than 9.8
when deploying DNSSEC. It appears the upcoming release of bind is from
Debian experimental, and not unstable. What's up with that?

A while ago I think I saw a page on Debian's site about the issues of
moving to bind 9.9, but I can't seem to find it right now. It might help
to review it prior to trying out 9.9. Anyone have any pointers?

I would like to use bind 9.9 to deploy DNSSEC and DANE prior to the raring
release. Is their any significant difference running it on 12.04 or 12.10?
 Is this a bad idea?

Most recent ppa build I can find of bind 9.9
