Re: New Ubuntu Server Guide Live
Hi all Sorry this is quite a delayed update, but the publishing issue for the server guide was fixed by IS on 29th April, and has been building daily ever since. You can always find the latest version of the PDF with the link https://assets.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server-guide. The guide now includes text at the very bottom saying e.g. "PDF generated on 2020-05-07 03:53:16", so you can see how fresh the content is. Let me know if you find any more issues with this. There was an issue with a big spew of the URL stuff on the navigation page from the discourse source. That was late last night (pages 4-6): https://assets.ubuntu.com/v1/59989c24-ubuntu-server-guide.pdf But I see the entire navigation page is gone this morning, which makes sense as the table of contents tab can be used. ... Re: New Ubuntu Server Guide Live
Hi all Yes I'm afraid our script broke because of a change in the Discourse API a while ago, but now it turns out there were a couple of issues on top of that too. A couple of months ago IS put a new content-cache in front of our sites and it further broke the script in two ways. We will be adding a date to the PDF so you can see when it was generated, so you could notice that it wasn't updating every day and let us know. The last blocker should be the resolution of this RT, which will hopefully happen today: https://portal.admin.canonical.com/C125530/ I'll let you know when the job is working again, at which point the PDF should hopefully be published daily again. I found Robin (on CC now) who was able to point me to the PDF conversion job. It would run once per day, but fails since ~1.5 months. We talked about fixing that as well as adding a "generated at " into the PDF to spot such issues more easily. At the top of the post (if it is a wiki type as our guide posts are) there is a little counter which shows the number of versions. It is a Number followed by a "pen on a paper" icon. That opens up the history and you can switch through versions. For example I see you adding the self-link to "Introduction" as last edit. Josh before did change "virt-* tools" to "virt tools" and so on. > I could not see my attempt to include that page at the time, > it still went to the discourse source page instead, but I > do see it this morning. > I wonder if a new html page needs time to actually create or something, > just like the PDF is only daily. IIRC html usually rendered sub 30 minutes for me, mostly almost instantly. And that seems to be true as your [2] has your last changes. I haven't checked the PDF in the past so I don't know what to estimate. But I agree that there the whole section of virt-tools is missing. PDF directly goes from uvt to lxd skipping virt-tools. Maybe that is why Josh updated the link? There might be something missing on the virt-tools page. Other than the majority of pages around it it was created by me (a split from other virt* pages). I have added the tags to the page and links from the introduction to finally confirm it was rendered into HTML. But I never checked the PDF, maybe there is some other tweak yet unknown to me needed to properly render it into PDF as well. I'll ask around and let you know if I find anything. > > [1]: https://ubuntu.com/server/docs > > [2]: https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/virtualization-virt-tools > > > > -- Christian Ehrhardt Staff Engineer, Ubuntu Server Canonical Ltd -- ubuntu-server mailing list ubuntu-server@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server More info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam

In the context of being the libvirt page it was overflowing and hard to find actual libvirt centric information. First of all I have to admit that I do not like virt-inst too much (but that is my personal problem I guess). virt-install is only in universe but people tend to rely on it (too much), causes continuous problems (silly/odd bug reports often come from this area), and tends to get people not realizing the much more consumable cloud images. But nevertheless what you are missing isn't gone forever anyway. I have a set of further todos here to go further in this cycles doc update, that will probably: - split out virtinst/virt-clone to an extra page (as it is an alternative to uvtool / multipass that have extra pages as well) - There I plan to bring back that content that you are missing atm - Split virt-manager / virt-viewer to their own page as well (then it might have space for some screenshots) - For the libvirt page itself there are other topics that much more make sense there (not sure how much of them I'll get covered) - apparmor integration in libvirt and customizing it - huge page usage through libvirt - some extra content on passthrough - ... (those are aligned to questions/bug/mistakes) that I've seen over the last years > I guess I had better get a 20.04 server going so that I can test > that these thing still work or maybe got changed. > > I'll be back at a later date. > > [1] https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-doc/+members#active > [2] https://ubuntu.com/server/docs/service-ftp > [3] ??? > > ... RE: New Ubuntu Server Guide Live
Hi Josh, Thank you for getting the site up. I'll add the note and link from help.ubuntu.com On 2019.11.19 09:32 Joshua Powers wrote: > The new official home for the Ubuntu Server Guide is now live: > > https://ubuntu.com/server/docs > > On the bottom of each server guide page is a link to the specific > Discourse page that contains the raw content. I ask because this is a very restricted list [1] for help.ubuntu.com, on purpose. Additionally, I almost always publish on my own web server first, to check, and have others (typically Gunnar) check before going live. I worry about the potential for abuse, while at the same time welcome the ease of use. Actually, I only see the edit button available me for some pages. Why is that? > Please continue to help revise the server guide with the latest > information as we prepare for the Focal Fossa release! > > A PDF of the current version is coming soon. Great. One of the reasons we were anxious to see the compiled and published web pages was so that we could see if those internal links that were "???" would get sorted out. They don't, so that'll have to be figured out. Example: The first paragraph of [2] the ??? is supposed to say this: "Remote Administration" And the link is supposed to be to ... huh? ... Oh, that chapter cover section is gone. Oh!, maybe that is why the link is busted (it just so happened to be the first one I tried). O.K. So I went to look at the edit I did under the virt-install page, But it is gone. What the hell? I see some recent edits deleting very very important stuff. Why? I wrote that stuff and want it to stay. I guess I had better get a 20.04 server going so that I can test that these thing still work or maybe got changed. I'll be back at a later date. New Ubuntu Server Guide Live
Hi, The new official home for the Ubuntu Server Guide is now live: https://ubuntu.com/server/docs On the bottom of each server guide page is a link to the specific Discourse page that contains the raw content. Users can now more easily make suggestions, point out errors, and fix bugs on pages. If a discourse page is updated the change is reflected within seconds on ubuntu.com. Please continue to help revise the server guide with the latest information as we prepare for the Focal Fossa release! A PDF of the current version is coming soon. Thanks, Josh -- Ubuntu Server Canonical Ltd. -- ubuntu-server mailing list ubuntu-server@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server More info: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ServerTeam
