Quick workaround is to replace i=10 by i=45 and add a sleep 5 just after the while loop. Better workaround is to try euca_conf every 5 seconds for 1 minute, and add proper messages while doing that. Best workaround is to rewrite the initscripts completely to get rid of redundancy and race conditions. I fixed the problem about a month ago after another failed upgrade indicated that the problem was caused by a dhcp configuration file in another location. That file was located under etc/default (I think) and it was largely blank. When the server tried to start using that configuration file it gave the errors shown in the original message. The configuration file in the standard location (/etc/dhcp3?) was correct but not being used. I deleted the blank configuration file and the package updated correctly. This may have been caused when I accidentally selected the option to restore some of the communication configuration files to the defaults during an upgrade. That particular dialog was not very clear about which option preserved the changes I had made in the configuration files. Are we sure that group admin should have sudo rights by default in Karmic? It doesn't in Jaunty. When this bug was submitted, the AMI in question had a comment in /etc/sudoers which claimed that admin should have sudo privs, but the actual line to implement this was missing. The latest Alpha-6 Karmic AMI does not include the comment and looks like the file is reasonable to me. I have been analyzing the differences between my Jaunty server which has the segmentation fault problem, and a Jaunty virtual machine which works fine. I've determined the key difference: The problem machine has package php5-mysql (version 5.2.6.dfsg.1-3ubuntu4.2) installed. To eliminate the segmentation fault, I installed a different (apparently older) version of pdo and pdo_mysql by doing sudo pecl install pdo_mysql which overwrote Ubuntu's installed pdo and pdo_mysql libraries. These modified libraries are found at /usr/lib/php5/20060613/pdo.so and /usr/lib/php5/20060613/pdo_mysql.so. I just built the pdo.so and pdo_mysql.so library files from the Ubuntu source package by doing apt-get -b source php5-mysql and then copying those 2 .so files to /usr/lib/php5/20060613 and restarted Apache. The segmentation fault happened in the same way. I was also using this one on certificates. https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/serverguide/C/certificates-and- security.html What got me messed up was a small, but important point that got lost between the two how-tos. The LDAP how-to takes advantage of the group ssl-cert which has read privileges on /etc/ssl/private. They had the nifty idea of putting the openldap account into the ssc-cert group. The certificate how-to says to put the key into the /etc/ssl/private. This is fine, but while the /etc/ssl/private folder was readable by openldap, the new copied keyfile was not. Unfortunately for me (and probably others) the only error I got was the one the OP was also getting. I have installed the following tomcat packages: tomcat6 (version 6.0.18) tomcat6-common (version 6.0.18) libtomcat6-java tomcat6-admin tomcat6-docs tomcat6-examples The examples run fine but generate no log information. Tomcat installs into /usr/share/tomcat6 Catalina base appears to be /var/lib/tomcat6 I have installed the web application that I want to run as: /var/lib/tomcat6/webapps/myapp.war Tomcat tries to deploy it, as evidenced by it being unpacked when Tomcat6 is restarted using: sudo /etc/init.d/tomcat6 restart Deployment fails however. I determine this via the tomcat6 administration web interface where the relevant application is shown with a running status of false. When I try to use the tomcat web application manager to start the web application the message is: FAIL - Application at context path ... could not be started When I look in /var/log/tomcat6 to see details of why it could not be started, I find that the directory is empty. Any suggestions about how to get tomcat6 to record the relevant logs and where they should be recorded would be very helpful at this stage. It seems peculiar to me to have no logging being generated by the default package install configuration. I've been working with the dovecot-postfix package in karmic koala a5.
postfix seems not to be working properly with rsyslog; e.g. doesn't seem to be
aware of /etc/rsyslog.conf. All SMTP activity is logged to /var/log/syslog even
though the default /etc/rsyslog.d/50-default.conf is configured to send this
stuff to the usual /var/log/mail{.err, .warn,.log}. Furthermore, when I tried
to move IMAP logging to a separate log file by setting
log_path = /var/log/dovecot
in /etc/dovecot/dovecot-postfix, my system stopped accepting SMTP mail
deliveries with the following error message in /var/log/syslog:

I want to be able to keep IMAP stuff and SMTP stuff in separate log

[Bug 294528] [NEW] installing getlive crashed on wizard gui when pressing cancel
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: postfix I installed getlive through the ubuntu 8.10 package manager and it began installing fine. Once the install had got to roughly 50% it popped up with a gui wizard for config but I couldn't be sure which option to go for so used the cancel button in order to follow the walkthrough I'd found for this app online.
