[Bug 510171] Re: connection from windows clients only works using IP, not using hostname

2010-01-21 Thread Thierry Carrez
Could you confirm that it used to work for all clients and stopped working
recently for Vista and W7 ?
Do you know any specific windows update that might have broken those specific
clients ?
Any chance you could try a Samba server on 9.10 or Lucid (3.4.x) to see if it's
affected as well ?

it seems closer to what you experience. I'll see if I can spend some
time getting a patch in a PPA for you to test the fix.

Obviously libvirtd should have removed the stale pidfile (process not longer
running), by itself on
subsequent restart.
Furthermore an warning should have been emitted in some logfile, that the stale
pidfile was removed.

Best regards,
Arnd

Also tried from PPA:
5.4.0.40134-1~ppa1~karmic1

Installation Method:

1. Direct from Ubuntu Repo's.
2. Added PPA repo to /etc/apt/sources.list, imported key and installed via
'apt-get install'.

NOTE: I also cleared all packages in /var/cache/apt/archives and re-
downloaded and re-installed fresh with the same results.

Issues:
-
Ubuntu Repo Packages:
---
1. In order to login, 'lsassd' dameon must be restarted.
2. 'lsassd' seems to be starting before the 'networking' and 'network-manger'
dameons (Change of boot priority could solve the issue?).

PPA Repo Packages:
---
1. When the new packages were installed, the system booted much slower, I guess
about 5-7 seconds longer.
2. In order to login, 'lsassd' dameon must be restarted.
3. 'lsassd' seems to be starting before the 'networking' and 'network-manger'
dameons (Change of boot priority could solve the issue?).
4. My simple command line no longer works in /etc/rc.local, not sure a bunch of
upstart stuff in this release, that could cause that.
5. A bad one here, moving the profiles from /home/domain ->
/home/likewise-open/domain, that is a bad idea for those who are upgrading
versions. There needs to be a script included that will 'mv /home/domain/
/home/likewise-open/domain/ && chown &username:&group -R
/home/likewise-open/domain/&username'. This caused some headaches until I
figured out that a new profile was being created. Not a biggie, but it could be
a LARGE mess if that gets to the public.
6. When the packages were upgraded, I had to log back onto the domain, instead
of keeping the existing config.

[Bug 90388] Re: hostname supplied by dhcp server is not used

2010-01-21 Thread Serhii Piddubchak
It's a shame Ubuntu can't get hostname from DHCP server. It's 2010. Bug is
almost three years old.
But before I read the comments I didn't realize that X server may be affected
by hostname change.
Any thoughts how can this be handled? I really want this fixed.

I don't use NetworkManager, for me networking script is preferable.
I read on some forum that people just use another dhcp client to get things
working. Won't it be better to ship Ubuntu with fully working DHCP client?

Hope to see some move in right direction

[Bug 510732] [NEW] OpenSSH server sshd_config PermitRootLogin -> NO

2010-01-21 Thread Lars Noodén
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu does not use the root account directly so the PermitRootLogin
directive in sshd_config should be set to "no" by default. This policy
is backed by the upstream documentation:

"For security reasons, it is bad practice to log in as root during regular
use and maintenance of the system. Instead, administrators are encour-
aged to add a ``regular'' user, add said user to the ``wheel'' group,
then use the su(1) and sudo(8) commands when root privileges are re-
quired. This process is described in more detail later."
From : http://www.openbsd.org/cgi-bin/man.cgi?query=afterboot

Bruteforce attacks against the root account are now continual and have been for
several years:
http://arstechnica.com/security/news/2008/05/strong-passwords-no-panacea-as-ssh-brute-force-attacks-rise.ars

If there are shortcomings in the the documentation and guides for sudo
or how to use key-based autentication, then they should be addressed
there so that this default setting can be set properly.

[Bug 427539] Re: [FFe] Sync libmaven packages from Debian unstable

2010-01-21 Thread Brian Burch
Matthius - I think you are telling me to install the entire lucid
system. Is that right? I think you suggested chroot or a VM as
alternative platforms?

I already have a multi-boot system and have even converted to grub2 on
my boot partition. I recently eliminated jaunty (hence my desire to
eliminate hardy as well), so have some unallocated disk space. Wouldn't
it be simpler for me to install lucid as a new bootable system?

If I'm installing a whole new distribution (I am not 100% sure this is
what you mean), what is the point? Do you want me to test maven on lucid
for your own reasons (I will help if I don't spend too much time)?

However, I want to run maven asap under karmic... I have a lot of non-
standard packages because I run ubuntu studio (karmic) on my laptop and
also use the same system for software development. What would I gain
personally from testing maven under lucid?

I'm not interested in any setup which includes packages from a PPA or custom
built packages. If there is a problem, it should be fixed in lucid first, then
updated in karmic

Since the root account is disabled by default, it's impossible to login as root
by default.

Could you elaborate how defaulting PermitRootLogin to no would improve the
default installation?

[Bug 510732] Re: OpenSSH server sshd_config PermitRootLogin -> NO

2010-01-21 Thread Lars Noodén
Hmm. Wishlist is not the right category for a bug.

Mathias, defaulting PermitRootLogin to "no" improves the layered process
of 'security' for the default installation by adding another layer of
protection and not relying on the hope that the root account will always
remain disabled. Correcting the default setting for that directive adds
an additional line of defense should the root account become activated,
something which is easily done by accident, curiosity or misguided
attempts at solving other problems. You can work that out for yourself.

My own recent anecdotes show that, on the Ubuntu forums and when dealing
with about 150 students (from 2006-2009) whom I guided in laboratory
exercises involving Ubuntu, root accounts do get activated.

You can go to the page at the first link above to the people who write
OpenSSH and read what they recommend: defaulting PermitRootLogin to no.

Does that answer your question?

Thanks for your contribution. The current version in Debian is 2.1.0-1.
The difference between 2.1.1 and 2.1.0 is:

 2009.12.11 -- Version 2.1.1

 * Fixed some breakage in openvpn.spec (which is required to build an

[Bug 510732] Re: OpenSSH server sshd_config PermitRootLogin -> NO

2010-01-21 Thread Kees Cook
The issue is a trade-off between three classes of people, I think:
 - People that have systems where root can SSH in (which consists of):
  - Those that want to SSH in as root
  - Those that are surprised they can SSH in as root
  - Those that don't care

http://cheezburger.com/View.aspx?aid=3094191616

By changing the default to "no", we protect the class of people that
don't care, and irritate the people that expect to log in as root. By
leaving the default as "yes", the class of people that don't care are
vulnerable, but irritate the people that think this is insecure.

The choice depends on the perceived benefit in protecting that class of
user while weighed against those expecting to log in as root without
having to also change SSH configs. Is the dark green area larger than
the blue area?

[Bug 510732] Re: OpenSSH server sshd_config PermitRootLogin -> NO

2010-01-21 Thread Lars Noodén
Thank you for the cheezburger link, Kees. From it, I am starting to
understand more about how decisions are made in the Ubuntu project and
the authoritative resources drawn upon to help make informed decisions.
Anyhow, those that somehow get the impression that they want to log in
as root can always set the PermitRootLogin directive in /etc/sshd_config
from 'no' to 'yes'

What use-case is there for remote root login that cannot already be met by a
tuned sudoers?
Use of sudo allows further compartmentalization of access and privilege.

2010-01-21 Thread Jamie Strandboge
"What use-case is there for remote root login that cannot already be met

The first that comes to mind are various backup strategies. Of course,
best practice would indicate to use ForceCommand in this situation.
Another option would be to use 'forced-commands-only' instead of 'no'.
This may be overly-complicating things though

[Bug 510732] Re: OpenSSH server sshd_config PermitRootLogin -> NO

2010-01-21 Thread Kees Cook
"authoritative resources"? I'm inferring that you think my use of a
simple diagram tool to help illustrate this bug is somehow
inappropriate? And yes, I know what layered security is. :)

Please understand that the PermitRootLogin config default is not a new
issue. I'm trying to make sure everyone can have the same language to
discuss it, as this has traditionally been what has derailed discussions
before. Also, I did not mention in my first comment, but I support
changing this setting. That said, Ubuntu tries to make its decisions
via consensus, which this issue does not have. I'm hoping to build such
a consensus.

The primary concern I have is for the safety of Ubuntu users, though it
must be balanced against usability. A default system doesn't even have
openssh-server installed (it is, of course, installed on nearly all
server systems). A system _with_ openssh-server does not allow root
login because the root user's password is locked. Therefore, the bulk
of Ubuntu users are protected already from root-targeted SSH brute-force
attacks.

This bug is explicitly about the behavior of an already non-default
system (openssh-server installed, root password enabled). For this
minority of Ubuntu systems, the PermitRootLogin setting currently
creates a problem for the people that aren't thinking about how brute
forcing might compromise them (i.e. people that did not understand the
implications of enabling the strongly discouraged root password).
Changing the setting protects these people and gets in the way of people
that do not know how to change PermitRootLogin to "yes".

[Bug 510732] Re: OpenSSH server sshd_config PermitRootLogin -> NO

2010-01-21 Thread Colin Watson
If upstream are so convinced that this is a bad idea, then I doubt they
would have made PermitRootLogin default to yes! I do not intend to
deviate from upstream in the Debian or Ubuntu packaging on this matter.
If you want this changed, convince upstream.

We wrote down our thoughts on this in openssh's README.Debian file some
years ago.

[Bug 116773] Re: logcheck in dapper+hardy reports normal syslog restarts

2010-01-21 Thread Loïc Minier
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: logcheck

- Logcheck from default install in Ubuntu Dapper reports cron driven
- restarts of syslog daemon like this:
+ Logcheck from default install in Ubuntu Dapper through Jaunty reports
+ cron driven restarts of syslog daemon like this:

- System Events

- =-=-=-=-=-=-=

- May 25 06:25:07 medea exiting on signal 15

- May 25 06:25:08 medea syslogd 1.4.1#17ubuntu7: restart.
+ System Events
+ =-=-=-=-=-=-=
+ May 25 06:25:07 medea exiting on signal 15
+ May 25 06:25:08 medea syslogd 1.4.1#17ubuntu7: restart.

-
- Of course this should definitely be ignored as it produces verbose wrong
alerts every night. The patch should go to:
-
- /etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/syslogd
-
- As dapper is LTS and therefore installed on servers this patch sould
- definitely be applied to dapper.
-
- The following lines should fix the issue:
-
- ^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ exiting on signal 15$
- ^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ syslogd [.0-9]{5}#[0-9a-z]+: restart\.$
+ Workaround:
+ edit /etc/logcheck/ignore.d.paranoid/sysklogd and replace the regexp with:
+ ^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ syslogd [.0-9]+(#[[:alnum:].~+]+)?:
restart\.$

logcheck (1.3.5ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * rulefiles/linux/ignore.d.paranoid/cron: make /usr/sbin/ optional in
pathnames to cron; apparently a difference between syslog and rsyslog;
LP: #463471.
  * rulefiles/linux/ignore.d.paranoid/sysklogd: more specific matching of
upstream version and optional Debian/Ubuntu revision (DEBRELEASE), also
allow all allowed chars in revision fixes matching of Ubuntu versions;

[Bug 448674] Re: VM is suspended after live migrate in Karmic

2010-01-21 Thread Graeme Humphries
Here's an interesting addition to this problem:

In my cluster, one system is based on a core2duo CPU, while the other is
based on an i7 920 CPU. When the VM is originally started on the i7,
migration doesn't work. When it's originally started on the core2, it
does. From this, I'm guessing that the VM tries to use more CPU features
available on the newer CPU when starting, and then when it tries to
migrate to the older CPU some of those instructions fail, and that
causes the lock ups I've been seeing.

I imagine this is also why this hasn't been reported a ton, since for
people with matched systems they wouldn't see the problem.

Can anyone else still experiencing this confirm / deny mismatched CPUs?
