Yes, the purpose of the 'winbind' package is to provide integration with a Windows domain or AD realm; that extends to enabling pam_winbind by default now that this is supported. Of course, any problems this causes for you being able to use your local system accounts is a bug. I have just had this same problem, I think, installing 10.04 beta from 9.04. I believe that apport reported it twice today but those are anonymous as far as I can tell. I did try to save some other output data but looking at the report it appears that everything relevant is there. One symptom that may not show in the report - when dpkg tries to either install or remove mysql-server, the program 'start mysql' hangs This is also true of manually running 'service mysql start' (I think - I just ran manually again and it returned 'mysql is already running' ). As a result, dpkg never ends until I kill the start program, at which point dpkg will finish some things and then end with errors. Lucid Lynx Beta 1 i386 Desktop 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename' or by checking in Synaptic. As of the time of posting all updates are current. The bug happened after a recent update so maybe that's a good place to start looking. 3) What you expected to happen Login to system. 4) What happened instead Can't login to system either through gdm or the CLI, can't create a new user (with password), can't change a password on an existing user. And here's the whole story: Yesterday I updated my system and put it to sleep. When I tried to wake it I was presented with the dialog to enter my password (the lock-screen). Numerous attempts to input my password failed. I rebooted and the same happened on GDM. I entered recovery mode and updated again (this happened today morning). No change in behavior. I tried using the recovery mode to expire and blank the password. passwd -e username and passwd -d username Those commands worked but when I tried to login with username the attempt failed "System Error". The same message is shown when I try to change/set the new password for username. passwd username Right now I'm stuck without access to my system. I can only control the system through recovery modes root shell. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: ntp When ntp is started (or restarted) it produces in syslog messages of the form: Mar 26 11:03:26 ecube ntpd_initres[7854]: host name not found: pool.ntp.org for all of the servers I have put in the /etc/ntp.conf file. A workaround is to use "dig" to get internet addresses for these servers and put them in my /etc/hosts file. When ntp is then restarted, a time adjustment is finally made. Other programs line filefox and dig seem to have no problems finding network adresses for hostnames. Dustin: I'm not sure that's a bug :) uec-component-listener watches for new announcements, so it won't re- register your node unless you stop and start the publication again (or restart the node)... which to me means that you want the node to be re- registered. It will also register your node again if you restart the uec-component-listener process. I think the classic use case is the following: You want to remove a node from your cluster. You will shutdown your node and unregister it. If you restart it and you have autoregistration enabled, for me it means you want it to be used again. Otherwise I don't see the point in restarting it. If you don't want node autoregistration to happen, you can disable it at the CC level. Using a blacklist would just prevent a specific IP address from being autoregistered ever again. I'm not sure why I would want that.
