[Bug 712392] Re: qemu-img convert blocks other tasks
I still haven't had the chance to test this properly. (server is in production), but the problem manifested itself by accident. So, here's a little bit of information. I started downloading (rsync) a qcow image from the file server and noticed it was bit slow. 14MB/sec max - 790kB/s after a while. This is writing to a simple single sata disk. Then the virtual machines started to become unresponsive and I had to interrupt the download, or the server would have gone down. It's not memory pressure. Memory was at +/- 900MB (of 8GB). Only 2 small virtual machines were running, BUT there was a snapshot present. It's not qemu-img that causes the panics. Any I/O will do it. Then the famous messages start appearing in kern.log: [149164.740056] INFO: task kvm:21354 blocked for more than 120 seconds. [149164.740294] echo 0 /proc/sys/kernel/hung_task_timeout_secs disables this message. [...] [149164.740595] [8155d557] __mutex_lock_slowpath+0x107/0x190 Restarting the download without lvm snapshot present yields: - 11MB/s, but more or less constant. - Running virtual machines are responsive as ever - No errors in kern.log -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to qemu-kvm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/712392 Title: qemu-img convert blocks other tasks -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 790774] [NEW] ssh hangs after inactivity (maybe when connection is lost)
Public bug reported: Steps to reproduce: 1. Open a terminal 2. Write: ssh u...@myhost.com where myhost.com is some host where you have ssh access and user is the user name 3. Enter the password when prompted 4. Wait for several minutes or hours without doing anything 5. try to type something Expected: either the connection is still alive, in which case you should be able to type, see what you type, and do things while logged on the remote machine, OR the connection has been closed due to inactivity, in which case ssh should show a message and gracefully quit. Observed: ssh hangs; No message is shown; the remote machine's prompt is still shown and the cursor still blinks, but you are unable to type anything. You can't even quit ssh (typing exit has no effect) and return to normal local terminal operation. The only way out is to close the terminal (or open another one and kill the ssh process) I guess this happens when the connection with the server is lost, probably closed by the server due to inactivity; however the client should detect this and gracefully exit. [Bug 790789] [NEW] KVM Guest freezing following Ubuntu update
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: qemu-kvm UBUNTU 10.04 AMD 64 bit: I have been running a trixbox 2.8 KVM guest on my system since July 2010. This system has worked flawlessly up until this morning. I had a notification that my system needed a reboot, following which the trixbox guest hangs on startup. I have after a number of hours found a workaround which is but there may be a serious regression here bought in by this recent update. My work around involves adding clock=acpi_pm to the guest boot command. The freeze appears to hang just after kvm-clocksource has been installed messages. The guest is using 100% cpu on the host. I am not aware of any other changes to my host system so suspect the update has caused this. [Bug 790837] [NEW] Fails to start inside PV domU
Public bug reported: Xen PV domU's have no PCI bus. libvirt's src/node_device/node_device_udev.c calls pci_system_init which looks for /sys/bus/pci. If it does not find /sys/bus/pci (which it won't in a Xen PV domU) it returns unsuccesfully, which libvirt considers fatal. It's perfectly reasonable to want to run libvirt in a paravirt Xen domU, e.g. for running LXC, QEmu or UML guests. Additionally, the PCI check is disabled on s390, and a failing check is ignored for qemu:///session, so I don't see how it can be absolutely required for qemu:///system on non-s390. ** Affects: libvirt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/790837 Title: Fails to start inside PV domU -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 211631] Re: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown)
I still have a hang on reboot / shutdown even after installing the more recent netbase (4.45ubuntu3) and dbus (1.4.8-3ubuntu2) packages on my Kubuntu 11.04 laptop. I have four cifs shares defined in fstab. If I shutdown or reboot, I see network-manager caught signal 15, then a message about dbus, then modem-manager caught signal 15, then modem- manager restarts and load a bunch of plugins, then restarts again and again loads a bunch of plugins after several seconds' pause, and then the system hangs. If I unmount the network shares before shutting down / rebooting (sudo umount - a), the sequence is the same, except that after the second time modem-manager starts up, there's message about dbus that flashes briefly on the screen just before the power cycles off (so no hang if I unmount the network shares). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/211631 Title: Network is brought down before network filesystems are unmounted (CIFS timeout at shutdown) -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Serge, I will do this if there is a foolproof way of doing so. This is my main machine that runs a number of VM's so I would need to know there is a sure fire method of testing this new kernel. Happy to follow a reliable link. By the way, other guests seem OK. Trixbox is Centos 5.5 I . I have a media streamer VM based off the latest debian release which is OK and also a SL 6.0 which is a copy of red hat 6.0 that seems OK. Also a number of Windows VM's. I do not know what timeing source they use though. All I see in syslog is Apr 26 20:04:20 snowman init: dovecot main process (8874) terminated with status 89 here is my dovecot.conf ## Dovecot configuration file # If you're in a hurry, see http://wiki.dovecot.org/QuickConfiguration # -- WARNING --- # If there's a file /etc/dovecot/dovecot-postfix.conf, which is part of # dovecot-postfix package, it will be used instead of dovecot.conf. # Keep in mind that, if that file exist, none of the changes in # /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf will have effect on dovecot's configuration. # In that case you should customize /etc/dovecot/dovecot-postfix.conf. # -- WARNING --- # dovecot -n command gives a clean output of the changed settings. Use it # instead of copypasting this file when posting to the Dovecot mailing list. # '#' character and everything after it is treated as comments. Extra spaces # and tabs are ignored. If you want to use either of these explicitly, put the # value inside quotes, eg.: key = # char and trailing whitespace # Default values are shown for each setting, it's not required to uncomment # any of the lines. Exception to this are paths, they're just examples with # the real defaults being based on configure options. The paths listed here # are for configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --localstatedir=/var # --with-ssldir=/etc/ssl # Base directory where to store runtime data. #base_dir = /var/run/dovecot/ # Protocols we want to be serving: imap imaps pop3 pop3s managesieve # If you only want to use dovecot-auth, you can set this to none. #protocols = imap imaps protocols = imap imaps pop3 pop3s # A space separated list of IP or host addresses where to listen in for # connections. * listens in all IPv4 interfaces. [::] listens in all IPv6 # interfaces. Use *, [::] for listening both IPv4 and IPv6. # # If you want to specify ports for each service, you will need to configure # these settings inside the protocol imap/pop3/managesieve { ... } section, # so you can specify different ports for IMAP/POP3/MANAGESIEVE. For example: # protocol imap { # listen = *:10143 # ssl_listen = *:10943 # .. # } # protocol pop3 { # listen = *:10100 # .. # } # protocol managesieve { # listen = *:12000 # .. # } #listen = * # Disable LOGIN command and all other plaintext authentications unless # SSL/TLS is used (LOGINDISABLED capability). Note that if the remote IP # matches the local IP (ie. you're connecting from the same computer), the # connection is considered secure and plaintext authentication is allowed. #disable_plaintext_auth = yes # Should all IMAP and POP3 processes be killed when Dovecot master process # shuts down. Setting this to no means that Dovecot can be upgraded without # forcing existing client connections to close (although that could also be # a problem if the upgrade is eg. because of a security fix). This however # means that after master process has died, the client processes can't write # to log files anymore. #shutdown_clients = yes ## ## Logging ## # Log file to use for error messages, instead of sending them to syslog. # /dev/stderr can be used to log into stderr. log_path = # Log file to use for informational and debug messages. # Default is the same as log_path. #info_log_path = # Prefix for each line written to log file. % codes are in strftime(3) # format. #log_timestamp = %b %d %H:%M:%S log_timestamp = %Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S # Syslog facility to use if you're logging to syslog. Usually if you don't # want to use mail, you'll use local0..local7. Also other standard # facilities are supported. #syslog_facility = mail ## ## SSL settings ## # IP or host address where to listen in for SSL connections.
