[Bug 1318317] Re: openipmi startup script removes kernel modules
** Description changed: I need some IPMI kernel modules, so I load them during startup. This worked quite well until I upgraded to Ubuntu 14.04. As you can see I have the modules in /etc/modules: # grep ipmi /etc/modules ipmi_watchdog ipmi_devintf ipmi_poweroff ipmi_si Right after reboot, the modules are there: # lsmod |grep -i ipm ipmi_si53257 2 ipmi_poweroff 14366 0 ipmi_devintf 17572 0 ipmi_watchdog 24912 0 but disappear after a few seconds/minute. I found out, that the cause is the /etc/init.d/openipmi script. The behaviour of the script is quite strange because a stop/start will behave differently then a restart. I loaded the modules manually using modprobe: ipmi_si53257 2 ipmi_poweroff 14366 0 ipmi_devintf 17572 0 ipmi_watchdog 24912 0 when I execute: # service openipmi stop the module ipmi_devintf gets removed: ipmi_si53257 2 ipmi_poweroff 14366 0 ipmi_watchdog 24912 0 starting the service again with: # service openipmi start will remove ALL IPMI kernel modules: # lsmod |grep -i ipm # One of the reasons seems to be the module ipmi_msghandler. This is already integrated and causes some of the problems. When I remove it from /etc/init.d/openipmi like this: 65,66c65 < #MODULES_BASE="ipmi_msghandler" < MODULES_BASE="" --- > MODULES_BASE="ipmi_msghandler" 325,326c324,325 < # modprobe ipmi_msghandler > /dev/null 2>&1 < # modules_loaded ipmi_msghandler --- > modprobe ipmi_msghandler > /dev/null 2>&1 > modules_loaded ipmi_msghandler stoping and starting the service works again. But restarting the service will still remove all modules and will not load them anymore. + + [Impact] + Issuing `service openipmi {start, stop, restart}` failures lead to unloading of IPMI modules that were previously loaded. Particularly on OpenPower systems, but also on others, this will result in 'ipmi_devintf' being unloaded during boot, and in-band IPMI being non-functional (amongst other IPMI functionality). + + [Test Case] + On an OpenPower machine (this also happens on an appropriately configured (meaning without IPMI support) Intel qemu instance), load IPMI modules (in particular, ipmi_devintf, but any of them can be affected). Attempt to start the openipmi service with `service openipmi start`. Without the fix proposed, here, the ipmi_devintf module is unloaded. With the fix, the module stays loaded. + + [Regression Potential] + The primary risk of regression is if an end-user was relying on the behavior of an error during openipmi initialization resulting in disabling of all IPMI functionality. I don't think that is reasonable behavior to rely on, though (and is not clearly documented anywhere as expected). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1318317 Title: openipmi startup script removes kernel modules To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openipmi/+bug/1318317/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1546312] Re: Please update to open-vm-tools 10.0.7
Hi Robert, I asked the developer, and this is the description. The utility also give a usage information. Let me know if this helps. Description: The namespace tool exposes VMODL and Guest side API for a publish/subscribe mechanism which enables reliable/persistent communication and reliable asynchronous notifications to/from VMs without networking. The core of this mechanism is VM Namespace DB (based on SQL lite database) which is an entity that resides in ESX and facilitates the bidirectional communication between Guest Operating System and the Management application. The information exchanged can be key/value pairs . Namespace tool uses secure guest rpc channel to store data into namespaceDB (sqlite database) and provide two way communication between VMX and guest side. [Bug 1559079] [NEW] swiftclient.service upload leaks filehandles for large files
Public bug reported: When uploading large files (i.e. multi-segment ones) using the swiftclient.service functions, if you pass a file path instead of a file object it seems to leave the files open after upload. For example: tmpfile = "/tmp/wibble" obj = SwiftUploadObject(tmpfile, object_name=tmpfile) swift.upload(container="mycontainer", objects=[obj]) After this, lsof shows /tmp/wibble is still open (multiple times) This approach works around the problem: with open(tmpfile, "r") as f: obj = SwiftUploadObject(f, object_name=tmpfile) swift.upload(container=container, objects=[obj]): While I've seen this on the wily packaged version, it also appears to be a problem in the upstream (3.0) python module. $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 15.10 Release:15.10 $ apt-cache policy python-swiftclient python-swiftclient: Installed: 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu1 Candidate: 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu1 Version table: *** 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu1 0 500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ wily/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ** Affects: python-swiftclient (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to python-swiftclient in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1559079 Title: swiftclient.service upload leaks filehandles for large files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python-swiftclient/+bug/1559079/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1558310] Re: Latest updated stopped exim4
I don't follow this - simply restarting exim after the patch fixes the security issue. keep_environment and add_environment will be unset, so you'll get warnings in the logs, but both will be empty by default, so no environment will be kept, which will work unless there is some environment needed by some sub-tool in which case it will have to be configured for. It's quite possible something will be broken if it needs the environment, but that is hardly worse than ensuring that the server is left down…? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to exim4 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1558310 Title: Latest updated stopped exim4 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/exim4/+bug/1558310/+subscriptions -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 1558565] [NEW] Unprivileged system LXC containers refuse to start after upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04
You have been subscribed to a public bug: System was previously running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64-bit and Linux containers worked very well. Linux containers are unprivileged containers started by the system using dedicated UID and GID mapped ranges, not userns containers. Upon upgrade-in-place to 16.04 LTS using "do-release-upgrade -d", the LXC containers will no longer start.
