[Bug 1349949] Re: Juju's mongodb does not need to log every command in syslog

2015-07-28 Thread Christian Reis
The code which sets up the role lives here:

https://github.com/juju/juju/blame/8da94246468a4da71e62894f7a8a1bbbce112697/mongo/admin.go#L136

The roles we are setting up are:

Roles: []mgo.Role{
mgo.RoleDBAdminAny,
mgo.RoleUserAdminAny,
mgo.RoleClusterAdmin,
mgo.RoleReadWriteAny},

Why do we need RoleClusterAdmin and RoleReadWriteAny (in particular,
because they don't seem to be defined in the database)?

[Bug 1246236] Re: pxe boot from maas fails due to time out

2015-02-03 Thread Christian Reis
Okay, we did a lot of debugging and tracing attempting to find the
problem. In the end, it was hardware.

I upgraded manually to a newer version of syslinux and pxelinux which
/did/ appear to be working, albeit VERY slowly. It seems that the 6.x
syslinux network stack is more tolerant of errors, as it seemed to keep
limping along.

I tested tftp from a MacOS and Ubuntu 14.04 host on the network, and it
was able to download the image fine.

It turns out that the issue was actually a bad USB NIC that was
generating a high amount of RX errors; the ifconfig output showed:

   RX packets:1380 errors:2758 dropped:1379 overruns:0
frame:1379

We had swapped out the switch, cable and tried other client nodes before
realizing it.

Moral of the story is that pxelinux's network stack tends to be more
sensitive to networking problems, and the symptom is that tftp fails or
works very slowly. I'll add that to my collection of release notes.

[Bug 1246236] Re: pxe boot from maas fails due to time out

2015-02-03 Thread Christian Reis
Static ARP did not help.

Setting the MTU to 1200 caused pxelinux.0 to fail transferring with
similar, but different behaviour:

12:12:50.699971 IP 10.0.0.12.2071 > 10.0.0.1.tftp: 32 RRQ "pxelinux.0" octet
blksize 1456
12:12:50.773393 IP 10.0.0.1.59263 > 10.0.0.12.2071: UDP, length 15
12:12:50.773775 IP 10.0.0.12.2071 > 10.0.0.1.59263: UDP, length 4
12:12:50.774211 IP 10.0.0.1.59263 > 10.0.0.12.2071: UDP, length 1404
12:12:50.774226 IP 10.0.0.1 > 10.0.0.12: udp
12:12:51.774349 IP 10.0.0.1.59263 > 10.0.0.12.2071: UDP, length 1404
12:12:51.774387 IP 10.0.0.1 > 10.0.0.12: udp
12:12:54.775554 IP 10.0.0.1.59263 > 10.0.0.12.2071: UDP, length 1404
12:12:54.775592 IP 10.0.0.1 > 10.0.0.12: udp

I'm curious as to why the blksize is set at 1456 by pxelinux.

[Bug 1246236] Re: pxe boot from maas fails due to time out

2015-02-03 Thread Christian Reis
Oh, I'm mistaken -- it's exactly the same as before. I hadn't noticed
that the machine had replied once before going offline.

Gavin looked up the ARP issue and it turns out that pxelinux doesn't
respond to ARP when in the keyboard read loop and when in the tftp
send/recv loop, so that's why there's no ARP response. But I wonder,
could the issue here be that the ARP cache is being blown away for some
reason? While the transfer hung, I looked at the arp cache and it had an
 entry.

2015-02-03 Thread Christian Reis
I installed a newer version of pxelinux to see if that is the culprit.
It doesn't work, but /some/ traffic between the nodes now happens when
transferring the kernel:

11:54:03.181388 IP 10.0.0.12.49164 > 10.0.0.1.tftp: 77 RRQ

11:54:14.240251 IP 10.0.0.1.52379 > 10.0.0.12.49162: UDP, length 26

and then it stops.

We're not on a bridged network (nor are there VMs) so we may be seeing a
different bug, or perhaps both situations trigger the same symptom. I'll
try playing with the timeout.

[Bug 1246236] Re: pxe boot from maas fails due to time out

2015-02-02 Thread Christian Reis
When we start transferring the kernel over, the machine on the other
side stops responding:

15:59:23.563014 IP 10.0.0.12.49164 > 10.0.0.1.tftp: 77 RRQ

15:59:28.600571 IP 10.0.0.1.44700 > 10.0.0.12.49162: UDP, length 26

It won't respond to pings either, and ARP requests at that point fail:

16:02:58.089006 IP 10.0.0.1 > 10.0.0.12: ICMP echo request, id 5945, seq 1,

16:03:05.952926 IP 10.0.0.1 > 10.0.0.12: ICMP echo request, id 5952, seq 2,
length 64

(I'm not sure pxelinux responds to pings, but the ARP request should
work I assume)

[Bug 1052815] Re: users plugin throws warnings

2015-01-13 Thread Christian Reis
As noted in comment #4, the fix for this is quite straightforward; just
wrap the qw calls (i.e. the argument to foreach) in parenthesis. It's
fixed in Trusty, btw.

[Bug 1368497] Re: AMT Power control doesn't handle some passwords

2015-01-08 Thread Christian Reis
Could this be caused by improper quoting in the script which invokes
amttool?

power_pass={{power_pass}}
[...]
issue_amt_command() {
  LC_ALL='C' AMT_PASSWORD="$power_pass" amttool "$ip_address" "$@"
}

Though if the ShellTemplate is quoting this correctly, it shouldn't be a
problem:

kiko@gasolinux:~$ PASS="abc$$def"
kiko@gasolinux:~$ AMT_PASSWORD="$PASS"
kiko@gasolinux:~$ echo $PASS
abc15306def
kiko@gasolinux:~$ echo $AMT_PASSWORD
abc15306def
kiko@gasolinux:~$ PASS='abc$$def'
kiko@gasolinux:~$ AMT_PASSWORD="$PASS"
kiko@gasolinux:~$ echo $AMT_PASSWORD
abc$$def

[Bug 1382250] [NEW] If IP address of interface doesn't match cluster UI, DHCP fails and no obvious feedback

2014-10-16 Thread Christian Reis
Public bug reported:

After a fresh install of MAAS, I went to set up my cluster, and I
entered an IP address that did not match the interface's IP address. It
succeeded in saving and nothing complained, but the DHCP daemon would
not start, reporting the following in the syslog (but not in any MAAS
log):

Oct 17 00:11:00 ubuntu dhcpd: No subnet declaration for em1 (10.155.15.1).
Oct 17 00:11:00 ubuntu dhcpd: ** Ignoring requests on em1. If this is not what
Oct 17 00:11:00 ubuntu dhcpd:you want, please write a subnet declaration
Oct 17 00:11:00 ubuntu dhcpd:in your dhcpd.conf file for the network segment
Oct 17 00:11:00 ubuntu dhcpd:to which interface em1 is attached. **
Oct 17 00:11:00 ubuntu dhcpd:
Oct 17 00:11:00 ubuntu dhcpd:
Oct 17 00:11:00 ubuntu dhcpd: Not configured to listen on any interfaces!

The IP address in the log was the IP address assigned to em1:

em1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr c0:3f:d5:63:fd:b0
  inet addr:10.155.15.1 Bcast:10.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0

In the UI, it was 10.155.31.1. Damn!

[Bug 1382196] Re: Changing IP address for the region causes the cluster to ignore pserv.conf and endlessly respawn

2014-10-16 Thread Christian Reis
Oh, I see, I need to change the IP in 3 places:

maas-cluster-http.conf
maas_local_settings.py:
pserv.yaml

And restart the cluster. But then, I get an error about the stream not
being accessible in pserv.log, which confusingly is caused by the region
not having been restarted. Weird.

[Bug 1382196] [NEW] Changing IP address for the region causes the cluster to ignore pserv.conf and endlessly respawn

2014-10-16 Thread Christian Reis
Public bug reported:

I installed MAAS 1.7 tip, and once the installation was done I changed
the IP address of the region controller. The cluster controller of
course can't connect to the region and that point, but because it
continuously respawns it fills the log with entries of the type:

2014-10-16 21:24:18+0200 [Uninitialized] Region not available: An error
occurred while connecting: 113: No route to host. (While requesting RPC info at
http://10.155.15.7/MAAS/rpc/).

occurred while connecting: 113: No route to host. (While requesting RPC info at
http://10.155.15.7/MAAS/rpc/).

Ironically, when I edit the file /etc/maas/pserv.conf to set a new IP
address for the region, that doesn't get reloaded nor does restarting
maas-clusterd solve the problem.

[Bug 1382190] [NEW] LXCs assigned IPs by MAAS DHCP lack DNS PTR entries

2014-10-16 Thread Christian Reis
Public bug reported:

As per
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/maas/+bug/1274947/comments/13
we are not generating DNS PTR entries for LXC deployments on MAAS-driven

[Bug 781195] Re: Winbind service stops often

2011-08-26 Thread Christian Reis
I see the same issue reported on my server every once in a while.

The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,
was called for PID 1361 (/usr/sbin/winbindd).

This means there was a problem with the program, such as a segfault.
Below is a backtrace for this process generated with gdb, which shows
the state of the program at the time the error occurred. The Samba log
files may contain additional information about the problem.

If the problem persists, you are encouraged to first install the
samba-dbg package, which contains the debugging symbols for the Samba
binaries. Then submit the provided information as a bug report to
Ubuntu by visiting this link:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+filebug

[Bug 569757] Re: NIS upstart dependency broken for lucid

2011-06-21 Thread Christian Reis
I'm using a slightly modified version of the ypbind file posted in
comment 5 on my diskless clients and it's working fine. The modification
is around the starting condition:

# XXX: the original file checks if net-device-up IFACE=!lo, but I can't
# get that to work. And this seems to race a bit with gdm, because the
# user list isn't updated when it is rendered.
start on (filesystem and started portmap)

The file and my directory are posted online:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~kiko/+junk/init-
diskless/view/head:/ypbind.conf

[Bug 602734] Re: ifpromisc reports PACKET SNIFFER for /usr/sbin/dhcpd3

2010-07-07 Thread Christian Reis
I was referring to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-
bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=525370 but now that I see it it's not exactly the
same issue.

So I think something is wrong in my cron.daily script, then, because I'm
seeing this in my email notifications. Let me check. Okay, so if
cron.daily is running its chkrootkit script as I think it should be,
then this regexp may be broken:

  # the sed expression replaces the messages about /sbin/dhclient3
/usr/sbin/dhcpd3
  # with a message that is the same whatever order eth0 and eth1 were scanned
  sed -r -e 's,eth(0|1)(:[0-9])?: PACKET
SNIFFER\((/sbin/dhclient3|/usr/sbin/dhcpd3)\[[0-9]+\]\),eth\[0|1\]: PACKET
SNIFFER\([dhclient3|dhcpd3]{PID}\),' \
  -e 's/(! \w+\s+)[ 0-9]{4}[0-9]/\1#/' $LOG_DIR/log.today.raw >
$LOG_DIR/log.today

Could that be the issue?

[Bug 602734] [NEW] ifpromisc reports PACKET SNIFFER for /usr/sbin/dhcpd3

2010-07-07 Thread Christian Reis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: chkrootkit

This seems to be a regression from previous versions. Here's what I am
seeing on Lucid:

  ii chkrootkit 0.49-3 rootkit detector

  k...@anthem:~$ sudo /usr/lib/chkrootkit/ifpromisc
lo: not promisc and no packet sniffer sockets
eth2: not promisc and no packet sniffer sockets
  eth1: PACKET SNIFFER(/usr/sbin/dhcpd3[3805])
eth0: not promisc and no packet sniffer sockets

I think dhcpd3 is safe to run, and based on what I've seen in a debian
bug report, this has been fixed before. I just wonder if it's regressed
or if this is a new problem in old clothing.

[Bug 573391] Re: package snmpd failed to upgrade: userdel: user snmp is currently logged in

2010-06-04 Thread Christian Reis
The easy workaround for this problem is just to killall -u snmp before
retrying the snmp install. Of course, once you get past that point, you
may very well run into bug 589056..

[Bug 494015] [NEW] named warns: max open files (1024) is smaller than max sockets (4096)

2009-12-08 Thread Christian Reis
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bind9

When starting up the Jaunty-current bind9 daemon, a warning is printed
out in the daemon log which says:

max open files (1024) is smaller than max sockets (4096)

ii bind9
1:9.5.1.dfsg.P2-1ubuntu0.3 Internet Domain Name Server

You can work around this with a "-S 1024" in /etc/defaults/bind9, but
this has been reported to be a kernel bug that should have been fixed in
2.6.28: http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/max-open-files-1024-smaller-than-
max-sockets/ and yet, this server is running:
