[Bug 1313393] [NEW] dnsmasq lockup at 100% cpu

2014-04-27 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

I hit a case where dnsmasq was running at 100% cpu and not responding to
requests.
This is a freshly installed and updated trusty VM which has just been
dist-upgraded to utopic.

At boot/login it seemed OK, but then I bought up firefox and it couldn't get to
it's home page, top showed dnsmasq eating cpu.
strace'ing dnsmasq showed it doing:

select(8, [0 3 6 7], [], [6], NULL) = 1 (in [0])
recvmsg(0, 0x7ba98110, 0) = -1 ENOTSOCK (Socket operation on
non-socket)
accept(0, 0, NULL) = -1 ENOTSOCK (Socket operation on
non-socket)
select(8, [0 3 6 7], [], [6], NULL) = 1 (in [0])

constantly.

fd 8 is a pipe (not sure where to - back to another thread?)

This is the dnsmasq kicked off by a default network manager setup; not
changed any networking settings.

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 14.10
Package: dnsmasq-base 2.70-1

[Bug 1313393] Re: dnsmasq lockup at 100% cpu

2014-04-27 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi Simon,
  1) Apparently so - I just rebooted the vm to see if I could repeat it, and it
was already stuck at 100% and non-responsive.
(and blueskaj who confirmed it was seeing the same problem on irc)
  2) /usr/sbin/dnsmasq --no-resolv --keep-in-foreground --no-hosts
--bind-interfaces --pid-file=/run/sendsigs.omit.d/network-manager.dnsmasq.pid
--listen-address=127.0.1.1 --conf-file=/var/run/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.conf
--cache-size=0 --proxy-dnssec
--enable-dbus=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.dnsmasq
--conf-dir=/etc/NetworkManager/dnsmasq.d
(typed so typos are probably mine)

sudo killing the dnsmasq and then reenabling the network interface on nm
gets it working again.

It would be better if you could upload this bug info with apport-collect
and that will get a full set of diagnostic logs.

You might also want to install the -dbgsym package (
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash ) that will get a much
more detailed backtrace if you can't upload the crash logs directly.

2012-12-29 Thread Dave Gilbert
Medium - Moderate impact on core application

Thanks Alistair,
OK, so it is a little chatty in syslogd - but it's still only about 1 or 2 a
minute; I wouldn't have thought that would be the cause of your system load,
perhaps that's something separate. Anyway, I'll leave this to someone more
knowledgeable about irqbalance to look at.

2012-12-23 Thread Dave Gilbert
Triaged: Because the reporter describes the problem exactly
Medium: I was thinking originally low since It's got an easy work around and I
think this is a very unusual situation,
however to someone not experienced it's going to be hard to understand and
I actually don't know how unusual the situation is.

(Frankly I'm surprised your machine booted at all, but Intel's site does
seem to suggest it might be supported, and the kernels check seems to be
based on whether the boot CPU has the feature, which yours doesn't).

I'm also going to add qemu-kvm since I think they should at least be
aware of this if they aren't already

[Bug 1080369] [NEW] FreeDOS fails to boot in Qemu/kvm

2012-11-18 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

To repeat:
  * Grab freedos ISO from from http://www.freedos.org/download/
  * Add it as a CD to your KVM guest
  * Boot and go through the defaults (I'm using a small - ~90MB - IDE hard
drive raw image as the 1st IDE disk)
  * Go through all the defaults
  * Install FreeDOS to MBR (option 1 at the last question in the install - I
also tried syslinux - it didn't help)

Watch it fail to reboot off the hard disk.

It hangs for me at 'Booting from Hard disk...'

(I also tried chainloading it off a Grub iso - didn't work, and I'm
seeing the same symptom with OpenDOS).

[Bug 1048008] Re: tgt needs restart to find LUN

2012-09-15 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi James,
I agree it's likely to be an lvm/udev race; some observations:
 1) It doesn't seem to happen with files
 2) With lvm, It doesn't always happen if the guest is configured with a
single core; most of the time but not always
 3) With lvm it seems to happen (almost?) always when the guest has
multiple cores.

output of tgtadm as requested:

- lvm based, bad ---

[Bug 1048008] [NEW] tgt needs restart to find LUN

2012-09-08 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

I've got a KVM guest running Quantal server (as per CD install 2012-09-01) and
it runs tgtd with a single target
(the target is an LVM lv - I'll attach any configs that apport hasn't attached)

If I just boot the vm, the guests don't see the disc - when they log in they
just see the 'controller' (LUN 0),
if I restart tgtd then they see the disc (LUN 1).

I've edited /etc/init/tgt.conf to add the flag to specify two portals
and to turn on debug.

[Bug 1045027] [NEW] iPXE kills kvm with KVM: entry failed, hardware error 0x80000021

2012-09-02 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

This is a regression - I was using iPXE last night just fine on the same
hardware (an i7-860)

I've got a guest (xml attached) with no discs that I'm trying to
netboot, but as soon as iPXE starts I see:

iPXE (PCI 00:03.0) starting execution...

and it stops - the libvirt log shows:

KVM: entry failed, hardware error 0x8021

If you're running a guest on an Intel machine without unrestricted mode
support, the failure can be most likely due to the guest entering an invalid
state for Intel VT. For example, the guest maybe running in big real mode
which is not supported on less recent Intel processors.

[Bug 836329] [NEW] lvm volumes not listed if lvm has command_names option = 1

2011-08-28 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

I have an lvm vg called 'main' in which I keep images for my VMs and a
few other things in. It's configured as a storage pool in libvirt:

sudo cat /etc/libvirt/storage/main.xml

pool type='logical'

  namemain/name

  uuid507fc133-c479-ec69-fb3e-1a2693ce27c3/uuid

  capacity0/capacity

  allocation0/allocation

  available0/available
  source
namemain/name
format type='lvm2'/
  /source
  target
path/dev/main/path
permissions
  mode0700/mode
  owner0/owner
  group0/group
/permissions
  /target
/pool

virsh vol-list main wasn't working for me, after a bit of prodding I
found the issue was that in /etc/lvm/lvm.conf I'd set

command_names = 1

in the 'log' section (having tried to debug some other lvm issues).

I'm going to say also this might be an lvm bug - I think command_names
is actually changing the output format of the lvm commands, not just
what's logged, and for an option in the log section of /etc/lvm/lvm.conf
that's probably wrong.

[Bug 831628] Re: squid upstart script doesn't check for filesystems

2011-08-24 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hmm I wonder if this is what I'm seeing, I run a local squid on my
desktop (and push apt through it so that all my machines only download
once).

In the last few weeks of oneiric I've noticed accesses to squid after
boot, hang until it's restarted.

There is a squid process:

but the only log file that's changing is the /v/l/squid/cache.log that

[Bug 717837] Re: sshd fails to restart after /dev/null is changed to regular file

2011-02-12 Thread Dave Gilbert
/dev/null must always be the correct character device; if it's a file
then it's perfectly reasonable for things to fail.

Now, it shouldn't have changed to a file - it's possible you hit bug 387189
is there a /dev/null.1 which is the original character device?

[Bug 694953] Re: missing i386 libraries on amd64

2010-12-28 Thread Dave Gilbert
I've added ia32-libs to this bug since that's where most 32bit
compatibility libraries go on 64 bit systems.

(But I left samba since I wasn't sure that the ia32-libs guys would want
to put this in and that the samba guys probably wanted to know).

[Bug 647664] Re: Unhelpful Security labelling error with read-only floppy image

2010-10-02 Thread Dave Gilbert
I can see that it would make sense to allow /usr/lib and /usr/share to
be read.

The wider question is how to give sane errors; the error didn't say anything
about it being the floppy image, so it was luck
that this was the only thing I'd changed other wise it would have been
difficult to track down.
Tracking down that it was the /usr/lib would have been non-trivial as well for
those of us not familiar with the rules it has.

[Bug 648120] [NEW] Squid doesn't start at boot

Public bug reported:

Squid doesn't start on boot. Yofel on #ubuntu+1 spotted a single character
typo in /etc/init/squid.conf

It looks like that local-filesystem should be local-filesystem*s*

[Bug 647664] [NEW] Unhelpful Security labelling error with read-only floppy image

2010-09-25 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

I tried to add a floppy drive to a kvm/qemu image and attach it to the
/usr/lib/grub-rescue/grub-rescue-floppy.img file.

On boot of the guest I get the following box:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/engine.py, line 814, in run_domain
vm.startup()
File /usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/domain.py, line 1296, in startup

if ret == -1: raise libvirtError ('virDomainCreate() failed', dom=self)
libvirtError: internal error Process exited while reading console log output:
libvir: Security Labeling error : internal error error calling
aa_change_profile()

Since this mentions absolutely nothing about floppy permissions it's
pretty useless to a user; further more since the image is marked read
only it should be able to use that floppy.

Attaching config file.

In reverse order; no I'm not running SDL - I'm running metacity.

Config attached; it's doing it on all my guests that have sdl and doesn't on
the one that uses vnc.
OK ok, so it's pasted below - Launchpad for some strange reason believes this

[Bug 615077] [NEW] [Maverick] SDL local window broken in last update

2010-08-08 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

I've got a few guests that are setup to use the local SDL window rather
than VNC. With the last update to kvm it has broken in one of two ways
(which one it decides to use seems random)

1) My whole console goes black and the music player I'm running stops
2) The guest fails to start with an error of 'failed to retrieve chardev info'
from qemu

In /var/log/libvirt/qemu/fiddle2.log I see:

LC_ALL=C PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/bin
XAUTHORITY=/home/dg/.Xauthority DISPLAY=:0.0 /usr/bin/kvm -S -M pc-0.11

This was working fine yesterday prior to the kvm 1:84+dfsg-

that landed at the same time).

[Bug 604092] Re: package drbd8-source 2:8.3.7-1ubuntu2.1 failed to install/upgrade: drbd8 kernel module failed to build

2010-07-14 Thread Dave Gilbert
Ah well, with Maverick life should get more interesting; drbd is part of
2.6.35 so in principal if it gets enabled then there should be no need
for the separate -source package.

It's listed as one of the kernel options that need turning on in bug
589439 for Maverick, and I've just added a comment to that.

2010-07-12 Thread Dave Gilbert
I think the smoking gun here is the kernel version; that's the drbd8-source
package from lucid, but lucid is 2.6.32-23;
the reporter has a much newer (2.6.36-020634) kernel, and not too
unsurprisingly the old patch doesn't work against it.

[Bug 345485] Re: libvirt does not remove interfaces on stop

2010-05-16 Thread Dave Gilbert
not sure if this should be a separate item or not, but as well as the
interface it doesn't restart dnsmasq.

For anyone else trying to do that I believe the steps needed are:

  stop libvirt-bin
killall dnsmasq (assuming you don't have another)
  ifconfig virbr0 down
  brctl delbr virbr0

now, if you start libvirt-bin it will restart dnsmasq

[Bug 581369] [NEW] No diagnostics on incorrect network xml file

2010-05-16 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

If you screw up the xml file /var/lib/libvirt/network/default.xml and then
restart it doesn't tell you what you did wrong
or indeed there was any mistake - it just rewrites it with its best parse.

I'm ok with it rewriting it but it should give some diagnostics to let you know
what's going on!
I don't see anything logged anywhere, and there is no /var/log/libvirt entry
for libvirt itself.

(I can see an argument that says if it hit things that were unexpected it
shouldn't start and rewrite the file, it should tell
you and get you to fix it - but that's not my primary issue).

It might not be a bad idea if it pointed you at:
/usr/share/libvirt/schemas/network.rng

[Bug 560377] [NEW] [lucid] Stuttering mouse

2010-04-10 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

This seems to be a regression in the last week or two.

I've got Beta2 (64bit) booted on a 64bit host (upto date as of today
10th Apr).

The mouse is erm stuttering - it's a bit hard to describe but if I move the
mouse slowly it will stop and a few seconds later
suddenly move quite a distance - probably to where it should have been if it
had been following it all the time.

Neither the host or guest are doing anything much at the time, and I'm
pretty sure this didn't used to happen.

From /var/log/libvirt/qemu/fiddle2.log:

LC_ALL=C PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/bin XAUTH
ORITY=/home/dg/.Xauthority DISPLAY=:0.0 /usr/bin/kvm -S -M pc-0.11 -enable-kvm -

This is on an i7-860 host.

2010-03-12 Thread Dave Gilbert
Hi Dustin,
That seems to work - thanks Bernhard, Dustin ; just done a lucid3 install in
it (64bit) - worked fine!

(Note I realised the test I did today has my host is currently running
2.6.33-999-generic #201002211003 from the daily kernel ppa rather than
the standard one, I'll try and remember to redo this test using the
standard kernel tomorrow - but I doubt this kernel helped).

Thanks for the great work!

2.6.32-15-generic #22-Ubuntu and the
lucid-alpha3 desktop amd64 iso for the guest, and the problem is the same.

The backing disk is a raw lvm2 logical volume (/dev/mapper/main-fiddle2disk),
it's in a normal volume group with
a single physical volume of /dev/sda3 which is a partition on the SATA disk.

The failure seems to be 100% repeatable - the block number it fails at
is non-repeatable - I have tried this about 5 times now (once with this
latest version, a few more times with previous versions) and have not
had a successful installation. I have managed an installation using an
emulate SCSI disk rather than virtio.

One thing I saw today which I don't believe I had previously seen is in
the host dmesg I'm seeing some audit entries:

[10772.370241] type=1503 audit(1267889473.222:28): operation=capable

but it's not clear to me that's related and you would have thought it
would have failed earlier if it couldn't do any IO??

Todays failure happened about 5% through the install and the errors in
the guest's dmesg were:

end_request: I/O error, dev vda, sector 25702959
Buffer I/O error on device vda1, logical block 3212862

SMART on the host disk still looks good ('No Errors logged').

[Bug 511620] Re: write errors on virtual disc during install

Have you got a pointer to something on how to ask it to do qcow2? I've
been using the libvirt manager and I have a choice of raw devices or
file backed.

I agree, that bug you reference looks like the same one.

Including a dmesg from the guest, on the host in
/var/log/libvirt/fiddle2.log it ends with:

[Bug 511620] [NEW] write errors on virtual disc during install

2010-01-23 Thread Dave Gilbert
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

(This may be #420423 but we're running a much newer kernel on lucid).

Host: Lucid 64bit uptodate as of 23rd January - i7-860 - 2.6.32-11-generic
#15-Ubuntu
qemu-kvm: Version: 0.12.2-0ubuntu1

Guest: lucid alpha 2 64bit iso (having pressed update-installer on it on
23rd Jan).

Symptom: During install at a non-repeatable point the root filesystem of the
guest becomes RO
and there are dmesg logs on the guest says that there were write errors on
vda1. The block numbers
are different on repeated installs.

There are no errors on the hosts dmesg. The disc is backed by a lvm
lv, and I've tried writing it with dd if=/dev/zero
of=/dev/main/fiddle2disk bs=1024k and the whole disc writes OK.

[Bug 511620] Re: write errors on virtual disc during install

2010-01-23 Thread Dave Gilbert
Two more data points:

1) This still happens with the host running todays 2.6.33 daily
(2.6.33-999-generic #201001221151)
2) It works if I give the guest an emulated scsi disk rather than a virtio disk.

That's a little odd - can you explain exactly what you did? the
'Interrupt' is normally what you get by hitting ctrl-c - but I doubt you
did this if you were just watching it?
