[Bug 1481289] [NEW] PHP 5.5.9 Default socket timeout being not honoured by application

2015-08-04 Thread Phil
Public bug reported:

Hello,

There exists in PHP 5.5.9-1ubuntu4.11, a known bug,
https://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=41631 which has been patched and applied
to PHP version 5.5.17 / 5.5.18 and also upstream 5.5/5.6/master
branches.

PHP allows a socket timeout to set which is not honoured in code
execution. This is business critical for the system I work on.

The timeout is set with a single line of code:
ini_set('default_socket_timeout', 10);

A patch exists that can be applied to non fixed PHP versions.

Can the patch, found here: https://bugs.php.net/patch-
display.php?bug_id=41631&patch=bug41631.patch&revision=latest, be
applied to the version of PHP 5.5.9 in Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS and rolled out
please?

Thank you,

[Bug 1380442] [NEW] default vsftpd package no login with pam-pgsql

2014-10-12 Thread Phil
Public bug reported:

1) lsb_release -rd:
Description: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS
Release: 14.04

2) default vsftpd package - apt-cache policy vsftpd:
Installed: 3.0.2-1ubuntu2.14.04.1
Candidate: 3.0.2-1ubuntu2.14.04.1
Version table:
*** 3.0.2-1ubuntu2.14.04.1 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3.0.2-1ubuntu2 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ trusty/main amd64 Packages

3) I expect to be able to log in as a virtual user via pam-pgsql

4) Receive below errors

error received when attempting to log in via filezilla

Command:USER test
Response: 331 Please specify the password.
Command:PASS
Response:   500 OOPS: priv_sock_get_result
Error: Critical error: Could not connect to server

error logged in /var/log/auth.log

PAM unable to dlopen(pam_pgsql.so): libffi.so.6: failed to map segment from
shared object: Cannot allocate memory
PAM adding faulty module: pam_pgsql.so

5) Solution:

 - 1) apt-get source vsftpd
 - 2) apply patches found in the debian distribution (can someone explain why
patched source isn't already in debian zip?)
 - 3) make && make install (requires packages libwrap0 libwrap0-dev)

login works fine after installing from source, meaning the default
vsftpd package is not compiled from its corresponding source. Without
source of the default distributed package, I was unable to debug
further.

6) I can provide configuration files, but will need an email to forward
them to.

[Bug 1380442] Re: default vsftpd package no login with pam-pgsql

2014-10-14 Thread Phil
More info found out today after updating the package 'openssl' then
recompiling.  I received the error:

PAM unable to dlopen(pam_pgsql.so): sqllite.so.6: failed to map segment
from shared object: Cannot allocate memory

I then read online somewhere to add more memory limit via line 22 in
defs.h

#define VSFTP_AS_LIMIT 100ul * 1024 * 1024

Without spending time to figure out how much more vsftpd actually
needed, I arbitrarily appended " * 6", recompiled and the error went
away. This suggests the default distributed vsftpd package could use a
bug-fix along those same lines.

In the end, I've been reading that sftp is the future, so vsftpd might be
obsolete anyway - however for those of us running into vsftpd issues, I don't
see the harm in updating the default package to something that works.

Thanks,
Phil

[Bug 592610] Re: Shared folders (through Samba) when following instructions sometimes does not work correctly

2012-06-07 Thread Phil Headford
I agree with Paddy Landau that a respectable OS is expected these days
to be able to connect to shared folders (on at least the three main OSs)
with little or no user intervention. Once the computer and workgroup are
entered, and perhaps whether DHCP is being used, the configuration files
should be automatically tailored to suit the situation the system finds
itself in.

[Bug 1037037] [NEW] etckeeper not working on Precise

2012-08-15 Thread Phil Dobbin
Public bug reported:

I run etckeeper on several different distros (CentOS, Debian, Fedora) &
it works just fine. However when installing via Synaptic on Ubuntu 12.04
Precise Pangolin i686 & after the installation I run the initial commit
which is OK, it fails to work either via Software Update, Synaptic or
apt.

I've triple checked all the config files, I've switched from bzr to git,
I've purged & re-installed & I've also installed it on three different
physical systems (one of which was a clean install i686 from a Live CD)
but after the initial commit, nothing happens.

The cron job doesn't run & after a Software Update, both `status` &
`log` are telling me the repo's clean when it patently isn't.

>From what I've seen on Google searches pertaining to this problem, it
seems I'm the only one who's seeing this which is why I went to lengths
that I have to make sure it wasn't a problem my end.

I've asked on the Ubuntu User mailing list & have received no responses
so I've filed this now as a bug.

Hi, Serge.

less's output is:

`revno: 1
committer: root
branch nick: ubuntustar /etc repository
timestamp: Fri 2012-08-10 20:07:27 +0100

As you can see by the date that was five days ago & I install all
updates after the cron job job finds any each morning.

Also I ran `sudo apt-get install libboost-dev` successfully just before
the above less output was sent to STDOUT.

Cheers,

  Phil...

Sorry. My mistake. If I run `#apt-get install qemu-kvm` I now see:

`revno: 2
committer: Phil Dobbin
branch nick: ubuntustar /etc repository
timestamp: Wed 2012-08-15 23:37:16 +0100

  +qemu-utils 1.0+noroms-0ubuntu14.1
  +seabios 0.6.2-0ubuntu2.1
  +vgabios 0.6c-2ubuntu3`

Just dumb luck (& not a little dumb in general) on my part: I'd seen all
other distros updating something that obviously had impacted something
in `/etc/` but for the last five days this hadn't been the case on Precise.

Extremely sorry to waste your time. Apologies.

Cheers,

  Phil...

[Bug 908605] [NEW] mod_wsgi fails to log python errors

2011-12-25 Thread Phil Stone
Public bug reported:

mod_wsgi based python apps that generate python errors, like divide by
zero, should send a 500 error to the browser and log the python errors
in the applications' log.

In Ubuntu 11.10 a regression was introduce where the Apache VirtualHost
must be specified as *:80 for this expected behavior to still work.
Anything else sends the 500 error to the browser, but leaves nothing in
the apache log file.

Here are the 2 files needed to reproduce the problem...
To reproduce you also need an entry in /etc/hosts for www.hello.loc to be
127.0.0.1,
and an otherwise working apache server.

--- The standard mod_wsgi Hello World App, modifed to force a divide by
zero error... ---

#!/usr/bin/python

def application(environ, start_response):

a = 5/0 # This line added to induce a deliberate error. Hide this
line to always see Hello World! in browser.

status = '200 OK'
output = 'Hello World!'

response_headers = [('Content-type', 'text/plain'),
('Content-Length', str(len(output)))]
start_response(status, response_headers)

return [output]

--- The Apache Configuration file for this same application ---

WSGIRestrictEmbedded On

ServerName www.hello.loc

WSGIProcessGrouphello.loc
WSGIDaemonProcess   hello.loc processes=1 threads=10 display-name=%{GROUP}
WSGIScriptAlias  /  /www/hello/website.py process-group=hello.loc
application-group=${GLOBAL}

LogLevelwarn
ErrorLog/www/hello/logs/error.log
CustomLog   /www/hello/logs/access.log combined

--- NOTES ---

The 2 files given above are SUPPOSED to generate an internal error to the
browser (a 500 error)
AND log into the error log the python traceback showing the line and file where
the divide by zero
error happened.

It does not work because of the 127.0.0.1 in the VirtualHost...

Also broke are Named Virtual Hosts of any form, as in...

The work around is to use "*" instead, as in...

I found this bug on an upgrade of Ubuntu Server to 11.10.

Note that the form that works, serves the site on all IP
addresses on a
server. This is the "toy" form of this command. Real servers are often
multi-homed.
The parameter on the Virtual host when not *:80 is supposed to indicate the IP
or named server that
is being used.

NOTE... ONLY ERROR LOGGING is impacted by this bug, NOT normal display.

A website impacted by this bug, especially after a system upgrade to 11.10,
will serve
"Internal Server Errors" to client browsers and NOT log the error to the error
logs
for discovery later by an administrator.

(As I found out to my trouble on a much, much bigger system than this
example.)

Technically the work-around given above is a potential security issue depending
on the networking
involved, so be careful if you're reading this and hacking your server to get
it working again.

[Bug 239704] Re: package slapd 2.3.35-1ubuntu0.2 failed to install/upgrade:

2008-06-13 Thread Phil Lello
I managed to get the package to install correctly after changing my
/etc/ldap/slapd.conf, to update the include for evolutionperson.schema
to /usr/share/evolution-data-server-2.22/evolutionperson.schema.

This had been left pointing at the pre-hardy path of /usr/share
/evolution-data-server-2.22/evolutionperson.schema

As a minimum, I'd recommend that missing schemas shouldn't cause the
slapd upgrade to fail, although I don't know what action should be taken
(if any) to correct this. In this case, I guess includes from different
packages should be checked for before anything gets uninstalled, but I
have no idea how complex this might be to do.

Phil

[Bug 316441] [NEW] PHP session garbage collection

2009-01-12 Thread Phil Bayfield
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: php5

Use of the Debian cron job for PHP session garbage collection removes
the default ability of PHP to clean up old sessions in non-standard
paths and custom modifications to the session handler such as database
driven session storage.

Although the defaults can be restored by modifying the php.ini it would
be nice to see this funcionality restored in Ubuntu.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2009-02-03 Thread Phil Bayfield
In the [Session] section of php.ini there is the following:

; Define the probability that the 'garbage collection' process is started
; on every session initialization.
; The probability is calculated by using gc_probability/gc_divisor,
; e.g. 1/100 means there is a 1% chance that the GC process starts
; on each request.

; This is disabled in the Debian packages, due to the strict permissions
; on /var/lib/php5. Instead of setting this here, see the cronjob at
; /etc/cron.d/php5, which uses the session.gc_maxlifetime setting below
session.gc_probability = 1
session.gc_divisor = 100

The default for session.gc_probability in Ubuntu is 0.

What does work:

Using standard PHP stuff, keeping sessions stored in default path of
/var/lib/php5

What doesn't work:

Changing session path to another folder either in php.ini or using an ini_set
etc (although the cron job can be modified). (For example we use an NFS share
for standard PHP sessions so sessions are valid accross multiple web servers.)
Using session_set_save_handler to modify default session storage functions of
php.

Granted for most users the default functionality provided currently with
php5 packages will be absolutely fine, but for larger, more complex and
distributed PHP applications it breaks the functionality without
modification back to php defaults.

[Bug 1210253] Re: With Havana 2 installed, Launching horizon UI results in the error " NameError: name 'Dashboard' is not defined"

2013-10-01 Thread Phil Frost
The cloud archive does not yet have the fix. It's not terribly hard to
patch the packages locally, though. Summary:

apt-get install build-essential
apt-get source horizon
apt-get build-dep horizon
cd horizon-*
# apply the changes to debian/rules and debian/changelog at
#
http://launchpadlibrarian.net/148082203/horizon_1%3A2013.2~b2-0ubuntu2_1%3A2013.2~b2-0ubuntu3.diff.gz
# (although probably you will want a different version number, so
# the next ubuntu cloud archive version superceeds yours)
dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
cd ..

install the resulting .debs with "dpkg -i", or put them in a ppa, or
some other repo, etc.

I've confirmed that these changes fix at least the problem described
here. I'm then having a different problem: when I log in, I get
redirected back to the login page, with no error in the browser or
apache's error.log that I can find. However, that is probably more
likely something I did wrong upgrading from grizzly to havanah, or a
separate issue.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2010-10-11 Thread Phil Bayfield
I found another issue with this cron job today.

One of our web servers was experiencing very high load, I assumed we had
high traffic and went to take a look at where the traffic was coming
from.

It wasn't website traffic at all.

We had so many PHP session files in the folder that the cron had failed
to delete all the files within 30 minutes, in fact we had 6 cron jobs
running at the same time. This almost brought the server to it's knees.

Yet another reason to loose this cron job.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2011-02-01 Thread Phil Bayfield
The irony of the situation is that the latest Ubuntu PHP packages, in
Maverick and also Lucid I believe (but don't have a running version to
hand to verify) actually do contain the "original" php.net defaults for
garbage collection. So in fact BOTH the default PHP garbage collector
and the Debian cron job are running.

So now not only does this supposed security flaw (according to Ondřej)
now exist in the package, but also the half-assed Debian cron job that
doesn't even prevent multiple versions of itself running and causes
extremely high IO. Replacing one flawed system with another flawed
system is not a solution.

The reality is that Debian are the real package maintainers and Ubuntu
just make a few small modifications and run the auto build scripts,
hence we're probably wasting our breath raising the issue here.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2009-05-31 Thread Phil Bayfield
You're probably better off removing the Debian cron job and modifying
the php.ini yourself to your prefered settings (even if you revert them
back to the original PHP settings).

Unfortunately, it doesn't seam like anyone at Ubuntu is interested in
changing this away from the Debian modifications, despite the fact it is
non-standard behaviour for PHP.

There is an interesting thread on this somewhere on the PHP internals
mailing list, it seams the PHP developers feel the pain of users having
problems with distro modified versions of PHP and get quite a few
complaints from users because of non-standard mods to the source by the
linux distros (obviously not their fault)! Unfortunately couldn't find
it now but it's on there somewhere.

[Bug 316441] Re: PHP session garbage collection

2009-06-01 Thread Phil Bayfield
If you edit /etc/cron.d/php5 you will have something like this:

# /etc/cron.d/php5: crontab fragment for php5
# This purges session files older than X, where X is defined in seconds
# as the largest value of session.gc_maxlifetime from all your php.ini
# files, or 24 minutes if not defined. See /usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime

# Look for and purge old sessions every 30 minutes
09,39 * * * * root   [ -x /usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime ] && [ -d
/var/lib/php5 ] && find /var/lib/php5/ -type f -cmin
+$(/usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime) -print0 | xargs -n 200 -r -0 rm

Just comment the last line to disable the cron job.

Then in /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini search for the [Session] section and
modify any of the following to your requirements:

session.save_handler = files

How php stores session data, leave this alone unless you want to change
the save handler, e.g. to memcache

;session.save_path = /var/lib/php5

Change the location of where php saves session files. Either a local
path for 'files' or a url in the form of "tcp://1.2.3.4:11211/" for
memcache etc.

;session.gc_probability = 0
session.gc_divisor = 100

You will need to uncomment session.gc_probability and set it to 1 to
enable the default garbage collection behaviour of PHP. This means that
approx every 100 requests PHP will perform garbage collection, you could
decrease session.gc_divisor or increase session.gc_probability to
increase this but default should be fine.

session.gc_maxlifetime = 1440

This is how long sessions remain active, 1440 seconds is not long, only
about 20 mins (24 to be exact) so it is often worth increasing this
value, depending on your needs.

There are other variables in the [Session] section but you shouldn't
need to change them.

[Bug 39249] Re: (Dapper, Hardy) can't create /var/lib/dhcp3/dhclient.eth0.leases: Permission denied

2010-03-14 Thread Phil M
I just noticed this on a Hardy server installation while investigating a
network outage. It's apparently unrelated, since this bug has been
appearing at least a week (according to syslog), while problems only
cropped up today.

I have dhcp3-client version 3.0.6.dfsg-1ubuntu9.1 installed.

Syslog entries:

Mar 14 13:12:13 style dhclient: DHCPREQUEST of on eth0 to
128.174.252.4 port 67
Mar 14 13:12:13 style dhclient: DHCPACK of 128.174.236.247 from 128.174.252.4

$ cat /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

$ ls -l /var/lib/dhcp3/

I'm not going to try to reproduce this, because this is a production
system and attempts might be disruptive to users. I'm happy to provide
more information on request.

[Bug 494141] Re: CUPS starts after SAMBA; printers are not available

2010-04-23 Thread Phil Salkie
I see this problem in Kubuntu Karmic as well. I've worked around it by
adding "/etc/init.d/samba reload" to /etc/rc.local, since I'm not sure
if there's a valid reason to start Samba way before CUPS. Probably
adding a check at the end of the CUPS startup script to see if "smbd" is
running, and if so then tell samba to reload would also have fixed
things nicely.

[Bug 447099] Re: No password set on install of slapd-2.4.18-0ubuntu1

2010-04-29 Thread Phil Bull
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 463684 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/463684

Hi atom88,

Publishing documents on a wiki isn't always appropriate. While it may be
easier for people to make corrections, there can also be a negative
impact on quality control. As I am sure you will agree, quality control
is particularly important for server documentation. The documentation
team lacks the resources to maintain an editorial team for the wiki on
the scale that would be required and so we keep the server guide as an
"official" document.

We are always happy to review and accept patches, although we are
limited by the need to go through the SRU process when we change
documentation for stable releases (we can't just push changes
immediately). If you are interested in contributing, please get in touch
with us; details at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DocumentationTeam and we'll
be happy to help you get started.

[Bug 1163927] [NEW] indent/puppet.vim required by vim-addons-manager registry but not in package

2013-04-03 Thread Phil Frost
Public bug reported:

installing the package vim-puppet results in a VIM addon that can't be
enabled:

$ sudo vim-addon-manager -w install puppet
Warning: ignoring 'puppet' which is missing source files

Seems to me that the addon requires indent/puppet.vim:

$ cat /usr/share/vim/registry/vim-puppet.yaml
addon: puppet
description: "Syntax highlighting for puppet"
files:
  - ftdetect/puppet.vim
  - indent/puppet.vim
  - syntax/puppet.vim

but indent/puppet.vim is not installed by the package:

$ cat /usr/share/vim/addons/indent/puppet.vim
cat: /usr/share/vim/addons/indent/puppet.vim: No such file or directory

(unlike the other two files referenced):

$ ls -l /usr/share/vim/addons/ftdetect/puppet.vim
/usr/share/vim/addons/syntax/puppet.vim
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   85 May 16  2012
/usr/share/vim/addons/ftdetect/puppet.vim
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5334 Jul  6  2012 /usr/share/vim/addons/syntax/puppet.vim

Removing the reference to indent/puppet.vim in vim-puppet.yaml seems to
be an acceptable solution.

[Bug 1264910] [NEW] Tmux backend can't handle spaces in window name

2013-12-29 Thread Phil Pemberton
Public bug reported:

When hitting Ctrl-a A (ctrl-a shift-a) to rename the window, if I enter
a name with spaces, Tmux briefly displays an error "Usage: rename-window
[-t target-window] new-name" and the window retains its current name.
Entering a window name without spaces works fine.

Similarly, the window name cannot be set to an empty string - this
results in the same error message.

This seems to be a regression of #1224352.

The problem with the F-keys is that Byobu's binding of them makes it
somewhat difficult to use Midnight Commander... hence why I prefer the
