For web browsing and email I'm almost entirely using a Linux desktop

For music production I'm almost exclusively using a tablet PC.
For my taste it's more or less impossible to do both on one machine or
to do it vice versa. Without doubts, other people have different

I whole-heartedly agree with this approach (and I know you and I don't
agree on a lot!).

Living in a travel trailer, I have limited room for huge setups, so I
have 2 laptops. One is a 2-in-1 that I use casually, and the other is a
gaming laptop that I use as my media production and development (read:
software packaging) powerhouse.

Not all computers are suited for all needs. As you so eloquantly put,
you can't have a sports car and a minivan do the same task.

Best,
Erich

Hi,

IMO an AIO approach always requires a rotten compromise. Not only
related to the chosen Linux distro, but also to the chosen hardware.

You either chose climate protection or you chose a super-computer with
a super-instruction set, that anyway is not used by packages provided
from repositories. For sure the super-computer still has got advantages
over an energy-saving computer.

You chose the advantages of a desktop PC, but at the same time the
disadvantage caused by e.g. the need for a graphic tablet, that can't
hold a candle to the latest generation of 12.9-inch tablet PCs and
modern pencils for graphic tablets.

You either maintain your own install by using a lot of packages from
official repositories of a distro, but also by compiling your own
packages or you only use packages provided by repositories. Both ways
have got their pitfalls.

You could do this or that...

This could become a very long list of an ambivalent point of view.

For other reasons than yours, I'm using two kinds of computer.

Perhaps you should use two computers, too. One for networking and
another for media production.

We usually use a dishwasher and a washing machine and not just one of
those machines to wash dishware and clothes. We can not have a Ferrari
and a family car in one car.

For music production I'm almost exclusively using a tablet PC.
For my taste it's more or less impossible to do both on one machine or
to do it vice versa. Without doubts, other people have different needs.

Btw. to listen to music or to watch a film, I'm usually not using a
computer at all. I'm still in favour of a hi-fi system with amplifier,
turn table etc. and to watch films I'm still using a television set.

Regards,
Ralf

Hello Helios,

Greetings!

I must recognize i have been away some time trying out a different
distribution which proved itself way more stable for navigation and
everyday tasks than Ubuntu Studio, beyond media production itself. I
even tried to customize a Linux Distribution from scratch over it,
adding media production software, unsuccessfully.

I refer to Kali Linux Distribution, a
Penetration Testing distribution also based on Debian which meant a
lot more stability about networking to me, which i use a lot. It's
repository is somehow blocked. I intended upgrading and/or adding
packages without fruitful results. I mention it because i would love
to have the same stability i enjoy on it within our Ubuntu Linux
distribution, although i myself could not grasp even upgrading
packages into it without having to reinstall from scratch a few
times, until i simply surrendered stating i don't seem to be prepared
enough for the task. There is plenty of documentation on the site
about configuring a custom distribution from it. I'm sorry if this is
not the place to contribute in this way, but i really would
appreciate somebody taking a look at it as a possible core to media
production distro, which i tried myself without positive results. It
has not substituted at all Ubuntu Studio distribution for media
production and design, but switching from distro to distro sometimes
turns awkward as i would rather avoid reseting and bootstrapping each
time a change of functions is needed. Sorry again if there's no
disposition about it or I misplaced the scope.

I would have to say this is outside of the scope of Ubuntu Studio. We
only support adding Ubuntu Studio onto Ubuntu and its flavors via
Ubuntu Studio Installer, which you can find the instructions for at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuStudio/UbuntuStudioInstaller.
It does all of the configuration the old wiki documents did
automatically.

Any documentation that is on the site that adds Ubuntu Studio to an
existing Ubuntu installation is severely outdated except for the page
about Ubuntu Studio Installer.

We don't support adding Ubuntu Studio to Kali Linux or any other
distribution outside of Ubuntu and its flavors. Remember, Ubuntu Studio
is Ubuntu, not a separate distribution.

Thanks,
Erich
