I'm looking around, it seems to be possible. But it needs to be
portable, (on my flash drive {no privileges}) so it's kinda hard. Maybe
impossible. I was just hoping someone else had done this.

For the Users list this is a fine question. Problem is, I don't
 think
you can. Maybe with some rsync or wget magic?

One can make an archive and split it into smaller files, but winrar is also
software that needs to be installed, to my knowledge.
There happen to be more and more windows programs that can be run off pen
drives (flash drives) without the need for installing. That stuff seems to be
modern right now. Maybe you are lucky.

Custom UbuntuStudio-Audio

2008-04-25 Thread Daniel Green
Hello,

I've been trying to lure my producer friend away from Windows and
Ableton Live and towards UbuntuStudio and Ardour2. However, I want to
eliminate the need for post-install tweaking (like setting up the
realtime kernel and memory locking permissions). I also wanted to
experiment with a pure jack environment where jack (and the
connection kit) start up by default and applications are already
configured to use it. As this is intended for a machine devoted only
to recording and production, I'd also want to do some streamlining.
For starters, no compiz or effects (the ubuntustudio theme, however,
is a necessity). I would also like to assemble a collection of online
tutorials and documentation and store them locally as the machine will
not have internet access. I'd love to get him on the bandwagon! If
all else fails, at least this will be a fantastic learning experience.

So now I'm trying to figure out the best approach to delivering this
little abomination I have planned. Ideally it'll be something that
others can benefit from as well...

I look forward to hearing your suggestions and feedback,
Dan.

Re: OT: How to split the ubuntu-studio iso file

2008-04-25 Thread Christopher Stamper
I just found an application that should work: Power ISO Portable.

http://www.google.com/search?q=power+iso+portableie=utf-8oe=utf-8aq=trls=org.mozilla:en-US:officialclient=firefox-a

Funny thing is, it's only available on torrents. H... :-)

But I'm going to try it. Looks like I can download the iso on the computer,
split it and copy the splits to my flash drives.(PowerIso should run off my
flash drive just fine) A little more work than I was hoping for, but I think
it will work.

Thanks so much for all your help! I don't exactly like running to the
library every day, so I am going to wait until Windows XP SP3 is released,
and get it all at once. (Apr 29, afaik)

Thanks!

Thanks :-)

But I have no idea how you would do it.

Me neither, hehe. I know I can build an image locally, but I don't
know how I'd turn that into something that can be installed without a
bunch of leg work... perhaps I should check out how the LiveCD of the
boring* ubuntu versions work. hmm... I could download a live cd, mount
the image, chroot into it, and customize... I think I'll give that a
shot. I can use qemu to track my progress.

Funny thing is, it's only available on torrents. H... :-)

But I'm going to try it. Looks like I can download the iso on the
computer, split it and copy the splits to my flash drives.(PowerIso should
run off my flash drive just fine) A little more work than I was hoping for,
but I think it will work.

Thanks so much for all your help! I don't exactly like running to the
library every day, so I am going to wait until Windows XP SP3 is released,
and get it all at once. (Apr 29, afaik)

 Thanks!

One can make an archive and split it into smaller files, but winrar is
 also
software that needs to be installed, to my knowledge.
There happen to be more and more windows programs that can be run off
 pen
drives (flash drives) without the need for installing. That stuff
 seems to be
modern right now. Maybe you are lucky.

upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04

2008-04-25 Thread Matthew Polashek
Hi!

I have a super stable 7.10 box that I'm considering upgrading to 8.04.
Good idea or bad idea? I have several things I've built form source on
here.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
