Ron This happened to me a week or two ago on my US 10.04 system, just after update-manager pulled in kernel 2.6.32-61-preempt and called for a reboot. After several failed tries, I eventually tried rebooting to the old kernel 2.6.32-60-preempt, and the desktop came up completely. Last night, update manager gave me 2.6.32-62-preempt, and a reboot into that brought up the desktop normally. It seems to work with some programs, but not with others, and that is with both programs being open at the same time, e.g. from Opera to Firefox has not been working.
