Hi,

It's true, there is no medium in cdrom player, but an usb key plugged!

It ends with a message "Unable to find a medium containing a live file
system" and asks for network booting.

For sure, this old hardware config (hp 640) haven't been tested yet ;-) !

Where is the good place to log this bug?

Thanks,

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] XFCE4 vs Ubuntu Studio 22.04 {External}

2023-04-14 Thread Alan W. Kerr

actually, the reverse...
install Xubuntu then use the Ubuntu Studio Installer to change it.

Then, you basically have the same setup as the 20.04 and previous
versions. or, at least, I haven't noticed any changes...

[ubuntu-studio-users] Yamaha CBX driver ("to Host" port)

2019-08-08 Thread Alan W. Kerr

back in the 90s (and early 2000s), a LOT of Yamaha synths
had a "to Host" port which was an small round 8-pin port that
connected to your computer by a 9-pin serial (COM) port (and on later
models, 8-pin to USB port).

The Yamaha driver was called the CBX driver. This was, basically,
an early version of "midi over USB" (or at least, "midi over serial").

So, is there an Ubuntu (or any linux) version of the CBX driver
available? I've done a lot of searches with *every* combo of search
terms I could think of... nothing.

It seems like it would be rather easy to reverse engineer the protocol
that is being used. So it seem odd that it *hasn't* been done by now...

[ubuntu-studio-users] jack not starting at boot if Zoom L-12 is on

2019-07-13 Thread Alan W. Kerr

OK, I've reinstalled 18.04 (with the backports).
All seems good except for one strange behavior...

I have a Zoom L-12 which is a USB 14 in/4 out, class-compliant,
mixer/recorder/audio interface. If the L-12 is on at boot, jack does
not start. I can go into Ubuntu Studio Controls and "Restart Jack",
then have Patchage "connect to Jack", and everything is normal again.

I've tested this with only USB hardware synths on: normal, MIDI doesn't
trigger this.
I've tested this with only a USB mike plugged-in (bus powered, so it's
not really "on"): normal, so it's not "all USB audio".
It's just when the L-12 is on at boot... if the L-12 is off at boot, it
can be turned on and everything is normal.

So, the obvious "answer" is "then don't boot with the L-12 on" but
that's not a satisfying answer...

What might be causing this?
Has anyone else had a device "block" jack from starting?
Is this some sort of "out of order booting" that only happens when the
L-12 is on?

Thanks for any help/suggestions...

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] kxstudio repos in 18.04 with backports

2019-06-19 Thread Alan W. Kerr

"Oh, Bother!" said Pooh
"I'll go get the 18.04 iso" said Piglet
"I knew something like this would happen" said Eeyore...

In synaptic, using the "Origin" button, I looked at the programs that
were installed from the kxstudio repos... and I didn't *think* there
would be any way to remove them... so, yeah, I'll have to reinstall...

So that no one *else* has to go through all this... It would be useful
if you could edit/rearrange/combine the following three blocks you wrote
and put that on the official pages about the backports...

i.e. If you are using the kxstudio repos, DO NOT add the backports.
reinstall 18.04 (with out the kxstudio repos) and *then* add the
backports. for these reasons [edited stuff].

Thanks for your help and guidance in all this...

This is no longer the case. The apps in the KXStudio repos are built

configuration in a very intrusive manner.

Our official policy at this point is this: adding the KXStudio
repositories to Ubuntu Studio is NOT supported, and we even consider it
to no longer be Ubuntu Studio at that point. What you have is no longer
Ubuntu Studio. Please do not seek support from this mailing list or
other support methods. At that point, you're on your own, and do not
come to us if your system does not behave as expected

You need to do a complete reinstall and delete the ~/.config and
~/.pulse directories if you save your /home partition (or if it's
separate). As stated above, you are no longer running Ubuntu Studio,
and there is no easy way to remove KXStudio.

[ubuntu-studio-users] kxstudio repos in 18.04 with backports

2019-06-16 Thread Alan W. Kerr
I have not seen anything about the "status" of using the kxstudio repos
since the new "18.04 with backports" method has been introduced.

It used to be that it was "suggested" that you add the kxstudio repos to
Ubuntu Studio and add many of the useful apps.

One of the these is Claudia. It is a "studio session manager" and a
patchbay (patchage-like), a LADISH frontend, and WAS the preferred way
of launching jack (not using qjackctl) as an "application autostart"
when logging-in.

Now, in 18.04 with backports, the suggested method of launching jack is
by Carla (also a kxstudio app). I setup Carla to do this but I forgot
about Claudia... Things were *rather* strange for a while until I
remembered and removed Claudia from the autostart list. Many things got
confused when both Claudia and Carla were "setting things up" *and*
launching jack...

So what is the "status" of using the kxstudio repos (and apps)?

1) should we NOT be using them anymore? if so, what would be the best
way to remove them? some apps were installed from "meta packages" and
we don't want to remove anything Carla needs.

2) is it "OK" to use them? if so, are there any to "avoid" due to
conflicts with the new/updated 18.04 plus backports apps?

3) are there apps that are still *preferred* to be used? obviously, the
new Carla is preferred. any others?

Thanks for any guidance in resolving this...
