 Understood. I will

Actually for the next version, I'm working on 'configure' and makefile'
generated with the autoconf and automakes tools; so they'll meet more the GNU
standards.

 Thank you for your input.

5 seconds delay is *huge* indeed; does the delay increases while playing? or is
it stable around 5 sec?

If the delay increases, you should try a 'lighter configuration' : a main
window's width at 700 pixels, and a longer time interval (you can find this it
at Menu -> Edit -> Preferences);

If the delay is stable and your CPU is not overloaded, you could try to
re-configure with the '--enable-realtime' option, to allow spectrum3d to have a
higher priority (RR p=50 to be precise); note that you'll have to edit (or
create) the '/etc/limits.d/security/audio.conf' file and add yourself as a
member of the 'audio' group if you do that (it is explained in the doc if you
want); otherwise, you'll have to run spectrum3d as root

Wich kernel are you using? A preempt would probably have better results, but
this is probably tweaking a bit more your system...

Indeed, on this machine, it should rock :-)

There is a realtime audio analysis and display in 3d this is CPU and GPU
consuming...

This concerns me; it should work out of the box with just libgtk2.0-dev
installed. Wich Debian and libgtk+2.0 version are you using?

This is already implemented actually : just set the 'Depth' scale (at the lower
right of the command interface) to 0, and you'll get a 2d view. If you click on
the 'Front view' you should have the good perspective for what you're looking
for.

However, note that there are already other software that show a front view
only, such as JAAA or JAPA.

You are probably looking for libgtk2.0-dev package, which is in the official
packages of Debian ( http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/libgtk2.0-dev ); if you
install this, you should have all it's dependencies installed with it.

You do not need anyaditional PPA for Spectrum3d : everything should be in the
repositories (with an exception for Geis : it is in the repo for Natty; for
Debian, I think it is not available yet unless you build it yourself from
sources in the *testing* version only)

Please let me know if you have any trouble and thank you for your interrest

I'm not involved in ubuntu Studio develepment, though I'm willing to help; but
i can imagine that's a hard work indeed

not helpful for audio production and well it makes me thinks a lot of things

I t seems that having a rt kernel working is already very difficult; I believe
there is already really hard work behind this... Furthemore, in my humble

RE: Spectrum3d : software that displays the harmonics of the sound in 3D

2011-05-05 Thread Victor henri

Hello Mike

Hello

I'd like to introduce Spectrum3d, a new software that displays harmonics of the
sound in 3D, with openGL.

Audio source can be the microphone or an audio file, and it is Jack compatible.
Optionally, it can be run in real-time when not runing with Jack; also
optionally, it can receive multitouch input (either from touchscreen, or from
touchpad).

X represents frequencies, Y represents amplitude of each frequencies and Z
represents time. The perspective can be changed either by rotating or by
translating the display around or along the 3 axis without limitations.

Here is a quick link to a demo video :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCVxDNbcqRE

It can be found here :
http://www.presences.org/download/spectrum3d-0.2.2.tar.bz2

And here is a link to a tutorial explaining how it works :
http://www.presences.org/spectrum3d_tutorial_en.html

It is free and under GPL licence. It uses the Gtk+, SDL, OpenGL, Gstreamer and
uTouch-Geis free librairies. It works on Ubuntu 10.04, 10.10 and 11.04, but
should work on other distributions also. It is still beta; testers are
welcome. Thank you for your attention.

Victor

very nice victor.. is this yours? are you submitting it up to
debian?

Yes I did it myself; i didn't submit it anywhere but I would be very happy to.
Do you think they could be interested? i thought maybe start with Ubuntu since
it is the sytem I'm working on. On the other hand, I think that in Debian the
Xorg implementation doesn't allow multitouch input for now ( but it can work in
the testing branch AFAIK); but the 'mutitouch' is not the main feature of the
software...

Hello both (rt from Falk's and low latency from Alessio's) are probably fine

My personal experience is, since 2.6.33, many improvements have been done in
the low latency kernel; I, as several other people, have reported excellent
performances of the 2.6.37 and 2.6.38 low latency kernel, that seemed to get
much closer closer to the rt performance then before. That allows me, most of
the time to not use anymore the RT kernel and all its related problems...

For the preemptible kernel, I was aware of the "preemptible kernel" and "timer

Could please tell for the @ other otptions:
    - for the cgroups disabled: is it the "General Setup -> Control Group

But when I 'sudo make menuconfig' in the
/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.35-22-generic directory (or the -28-generic) the
RT_GROUP_SCHED option is enabled...

On 11.04 kernel version 2.6.37 was not usable

Is a patch needed for that? Is it not enough to disable the RT_GROUP_SCHED
option then compile or recompile?

Yes indeed, I've noticed that; It was such a big and nice surprise to see that
a 2.6.37 or 2.6.38 preempt could do almost the same job as a realtime kernel
(at least for what I do)

It seems that the -generic kernel in Ubuntu 10.10 (and 11.04) is not very
appropriate for that, since the RT_GROUP_SCHED option in the kernel is enabled;
it means that it overrides everything that may have been configured in the
limits.conf. See jackd FAQ :  http://jackaudio.org/linux_group_sched
This seems specific to Ubuntu (according to Jackd FAQ); so it's probably worth
to have a try, but you shouldn't be surprised if you have a lot of Xruns. Then
you should considerr other options (see below)

so just try it, and IF you need lower

Indeed, there is no RT kernel for Maverick in Alessio Abogani's ppa; however,
i've used succesfully the RT kernel for Lucid on my Maverick; it worked fine
and it is probably the simplest; another option is to compile to RT kernel
yourself (wich takes some time but it not so difficult); i have this doc :

http://www.linuxmao.org/tikiwiki/tiki-index.php?page=compiler+un+noyau+2.6RT

Sorry this is in French, but it is quite understandable, I think; the
interesting part is at the very bottom under the title :

Exemple : installation d'un noyau temps réel 2.6.33.7-rt29 sur Ubuntu 10.10

If you want to do it and if you have troubles, I'll be glad to help.

Another option is to wait for Natty Narwal release : in Abogani's ppa, there is
a preemt kernel (which should probably be enough) for Natty available...

I'm using a Fast Track Audio Pro from M-Audio and i'm happy with it. I have
less than 5 msec latency

Hello,

Could you please be more specific on what is missing in Ubuntu Studio to get
that level of setup?

This what I know already :

 - Ubuntu Studio already automatically configure the
/etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf by adding the lines :

 @audio   -  rtprio 95
 @audio   -  memlockunlimited

You just have to add yourself in the 'audio' group manually.

  - However, there seem to be a problem if you use a generic kernel in Ubuntu
10.10, because in Ubuntu 10.10 the "RT_GROUP-SCHED" option in the kernel is
activated. As far as I understand, this means that doing the previous
manipulation (ie configuring the /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf and adding
yourself in the audio group) won't allow real-time erformance for JAck...

"The RT_GROUP_SCHED option overrides everything that may have been configured
in limits.conf and makes it very complex for regular users to get access to the
realtime scheduling that JACK works best with. "

This comes from Jack-audio-connection-kit FAQ
http://jackaudio.org/linux_group_sched

Ok so the only option is to use a precompiled real-time kernel, or a preemnt
kernel having that RT_GROUP_SCHED option disabled (for example in Alessio
Bogani's ppa), (or a "home-compiled" kernel, which is what i'm doing), or use
other solutions like it is said in the jack FAQ page I mentioned .

- The rtirq-init script has to be used;

Is there something else in Ubuntu Studio that has to be set up?

Thank you very much.

Victor

Hello Ralph

Yes i did, without succes; i'll retry in case i did something wrong... but i
did...

On the other hand, i've asked the question ate the RT kernel mailing list; one
of the devolopers of the rt kernel himself tried to help me; but since i was
not able to give enough debug info (i need a serial port to get the debug info
and i don't have it), nothing came out of it...
I'm curious to see if the new rt-kernel will fix this or not...

RE: problem of disk threads whith every rt kernel, except with kernel-2.6.31.11!

2011-01-29 Thread Victor henri

Yes i forgot to mention that is the RT kernel that makes the difference; for
now, it works ok with the generic kernel with optimized parameters, such as
   - preemptible kernel (low latency desktop);
   - timer frequency 1000 Hz

but it works quite ok with Linuxsampler alone; but when i want to add some
applications, for example rosegarden to record, Xruns arrive, even with a
bigger latency in jack

problem of disk threads whith every rt kernel, except with kernel-2.6.31.11!

2011-01-29 Thread Victor henri

(I've posted this already without subject; i allow myself to repost to make it;
please ignore the other one; i apologize for the mistake i made)

Hello:

I have a problem since almost one year now. I'm using linuxsampler, that allows
that load very big sample files (one of my .gig file is 1.6 G for only one
piano sound); this use disk streaming.

I always have such problem only when i use the RT kernel :

0x7f6eef1ee860 Disk stream not available in time!

After several message slike that, i get :

DiskThread: there was no free slot
Disk stream order failed!

Then the sounds clicks, then stops for 10 to 20 seconds, then i can play again,
then it'll come again...

This arrives on both Gentoo and Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits; BUT there is one thing
however : there is ONE kernel with wich it doesn't arrive : the 2.6.31.11-rt
from Ubuntu lucid (RT kernel was in the repositories in Ubuntu untill 10.04
Lucid, then now i have to either take it from Abogani's ppa (for lucid or
natty) or compile it myself with the rt-patch from kernel.org; i've tried all
of that, and nothings works, except for the 2.6.31.11-rt from in the
repositories of Ubuntu Lucid-updates)

Here are some technical details:
- I have laptop Asus Core i7 for gamers (supposed to be very fast);to be
noted : it also happens on another Asus Core I7, but NOT on an another Asus
Core i3; 4Go RAM;
- when i compile myself i choose : real-time preemption (of course) and
Timer frequency 1000 Hz, either on Gentoo or on Ubuntu with kernel from
kernel.org; nothing else is changed in Ubuntu.
- i've tried with the no-op cfq scheduler also; i use ext3 on Gentoo and
ext4 on Ubuntu;
- have a nvidia graphic card, but no proprietary driver installed

i have posted that at the linuxsampler mailing list without succes

Could please someone help me? i LOVE RT-kernel and its capabilities What is
it in the linux-rt package that is not somewhere else and that allows things to
work for me?

Thank you

Victor
