[ubuntu-studio-users] Upgrading from 16.04.2

2019-02-16 Thread Jerry Reed
I am preparing to upgrade a desktop that is currently running Ubuntu Studio
16.04.2. I have hesitated upgrading for so long primarily because of
issues with the newer version of GIMP. I think I am ready to bite the
bullet so to speak and go for 19.04 when it is released. Rather that just
run an upgrade, I want to do a clean install when the time comes. My
hesitation has to do with
configuration files. The machine is networked in the home and serves at
the main hub in my network. Can I just save and move the smb, cups, and
fstab config files for a seamless transition? In past upgrades I have had
to spend hours tweaking these files to get everything running smooth
again. Appreciate any input that can help guide me in this.

You *can* update NOW from 14.04 to 16.04 via cli by using this:

"sudo update-manager -d"

... without the quotes of course.

See the link below for a more verbose discussion:

http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2016/04/how-to-upgrade-ubuntu-14-04-to-ubuntu-16-04-lts

Which has already been suggested, recommended and debated earlier in this

ISPs use Deep Packet Inspection.

They give detailed information that is beyond believing. It's not
necessarily clear on what stage the traffic gets shaped, but it most
likely gets shaped. Yo spread doubt, without giving any evidence for
that doubt.

Regarding the topic you also recommended against

https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/installing-upgrading.html

Please, underpin why the OP should first upgrade to the non LTS and
then to the LTS?

>The best way to know for sure is to try. I tried and torrent works

This claim is absolutely nonsense, it just implies that I get
information from somewhere.

There are tons of sources, some might be false others might be true,
the averaged claim is similar to this one:

https://torrentfreak.com/is-your-isp-messing-with-bittorrent-traffic-find-out-140123/

I just didn't provide more information, since it's off-topic and I
don't want to provide more off-topic information.

Again, it's off-topic, lets stay with the topic, since some users
really use the mailing list archive to get help and it's not good if
they have doubts what to do, to upgrade from 14.04 to 16.04.

IMO the Ubuntu Studio FAQ should answer this, but at the moment they
don't and editing Ubuntu help pages became a PITA, so I send a request
to the Ubuntu Studio devel list. Hopefully next time somebody wants to
know how to upgrade to 16.04 or 16.04.x we simply can reply by posing a
link to the Ubuntu Studio FAQ and avoid off-topic discussions and/or
different opinions that make it unclear what to do.

It's absolutely not efficient, if the download is throttled.

Here is a worldwide list of ISPs known to shape torrent traffic,
https://wiki.vuze.com/w/Bad_ISPs .

For example only one of the listed provider in Germany throttles, but de
facto all of them shape torrent traffic in Germany by the Tier
hierarchy, https://wiki.vuze.com/w/Bad_ISPs#Germany .

AFAIK torrent is efficient for a minority of Internet users only.

No, the OP still should consider to follow official advises.
"do-release-upgrade -d" does the job, so for what reason shouldn't the
OP do a LTS upgrade, but instead first upgrade to a non LTS release?

If a torrent version is available, it is the most efficient way to download
because you are getting pieces of the file not from a single server but from
other users who are also downloading or who have already downloaded the file.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Upgrading offers only 15.x :-(

2016-06-29 Thread Roberto Verzola
Whenever I make a fresh install, I usually repartition my hard disk and, under
manual partitioning, create 3 or 4 8-9 Gig partitions and one big partition
which is mounted as /home. I use the 3 or 4 smaller partitions for various
distros. One for my old working distro, the others for a new version of the
distro or even another distro altogether. Thus, I can retain my old version
while installing a newer version, and my old data, mounted as /home, will still
be there. This also allows me to try other distros, in case they turn out to be
better.

You are correct that some ISPs throttle torrent speed downloads. But mine
doesn't and I believe that most ISPs will not do this, especially as the
torrent site used for Ubuntu Studio is not a known "file-sharing" site.
Using a torrent is worth a try. If you find it to be slow, you can always
cancel the download and just go back to a regular mirror site.

PS:

JFTR there are several pitfalls caused by lists, e.g. some software
might be split to more packages, than it was split by an older Ubuntu
release and the new packages might have become suggested and not
recommended packages, so some functionality of software could only be
available, if the user cares about it. Reading release notes of
the most important software doesn't harm.

The package management provides tools to make such lists.

Consider to read all follow-ups of

since there are several ways to get such a list, with pros and cons
depending to the way you set up your install.

Re: [ubuntu-studio-users] Upgrading offers only 15.x :-(

2016-06-29 Thread Lawrence H. Bulk
Dear Mr. King,

It's best to wait until the 'official' update which will come when the
first point release (16.04.1) is made available. This will occur on July
21, 2016. I myself will wait a few days after that before updating as the
servers will probably be overloaded with everyone trying to update at the
same time.

I always recommend downloading and burning to a disc (or transferring to a
USB drive) that point release PRIOR to actually updating, just in case
something goes wrong (and that has happened to me). By preparing an
installation medium, you can effect a re-installation with the new release.
(On July 21, it will be much faster if you download the new release via a
Torrent.)

ALWAYS make sure you have backed up EVERYTHING to an external hard drive
PRIOR to upgrading the operating system. That way, if something does go
wrong, you will still have all of your folders, files, etc. and they can be
transferred to your new fresh installation (if that is required).

I also make a list of all of my extra installed programs (it is not
necessary to list those which are installed by default) and I also create a
screenshot of all of my extra PPAs so I can easily add them as well. In my
case I make my program list on paper but one could also create an ODT or
PDF document. Either way, with a list of these programs and a list of the
PPAs, it is easy (if a bit time-consuming) to restore your computer to the
state you had previously.

I hope this helps you.

No, the OP better considers to use methods that are described by "quasi
official" manuals. IOW one way is to add the -d option to do-release-
upgrade:

  sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Maybe sudo isn't needed and the script asks for the password, however,
it shouldn't harm to run sudo ;).

Anyway, there is a reason that by default the upgrade is offered for the
first dot release, so the OP should consider to wait for the dot
release. Reading the explanations provided by manuals and howtos is
strongly recommended and it doesn't harm to backup the complete nstall
first, not only the user data.

Consider to use a search engine and to read the Ubuntu
Wiki/help/askubuntu/mailing list archive. By default upgrades from one
LTS release to the next LTS are only possible, as soon as the first dot
release of the next LTS is available. IOW as soon as 16.04.1 is
available.

It's explained here and each good search engine provides it as one of
the first hits:

https://help.ubuntu.com/lts/serverguide/installing-upgrading.html

"For further stability of a LTS release there is a slight change in
behaviour if you are currently running a LTS version. LTS systems are
only automatically considered for an upgrade to the next LTS via
do-release-upgrade with the first point release. So for example 14.04
will only upgrade once 16.04.1 is released. If you want to update
before, e.g. on a subset of machines to evaluate the LTS upgrade for
your setup the same argument as an upgrade to a dev release has to be
used via the -d switch."

And by the mailing list archive I already explained it this year:

Ralf

Hello

The software updater hasn't offered an upgrade from my current 14.x
version of Ubuntu Studio. I have tried to coax an upgrade to version 16.04
in the settings, but all it is offering me is version 15. Any ideas as to
how to fix this to get the latest upgrade?

Usually the upgrade option from LTS to LTS will not be triggered until the
first .1 release, 16.04.1 which is due release late July (I think).

Most people on this list don't own a crystal ball, so posting more
information, e.g. messages you get, when doing it in a terminal wuld be
useful.

Ralf, exactly what people expect though.work with the public everywhere
doing anything, and its mind reading time.

I successfully upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 via update. It took me a couple of
tries though
as update told me I had to have so much space on my /boot partition. I cleared
out one kernel
leaving the one that was running and it went along just fine. It could be a
partitioning
or lack of space problem.

I had to slow the message down to be able to read it however, because it was
just flashed and went
away as update shut down. If you don't know what is going on, you can easily
miss the error message.

It's an upgrade, so there likely are messages available by a log file.

https://startpage.com -- apt-get log file ubuntu --
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=28627

https://startpage.com -- upater log file ubuntu --
http://askubuntu.com/questions/98359/does-the-update-manager-have-a-log

In addition run the software you're using for the update in a terminal
and post this messages.

If the update fails regarding to issues that aren't related to the
update software, what does ~/.xsession-errors say or any other log, e.g.
for running daemons etc. pp. in /var/log/?

I had to revive a laptop that got the package management stuck because
of that (update process aborted, package management state in need of
manual rescue). I cannot believe that ubuntu has no simple option to
clean up old kernels. I had to dig out some shell scripting with apt /
dpkg. Even without a /boot of limited size (because of full-disk
encryption, for example), this is a serious omission which bloats
installations over time. I'm all for not removing old kernels without
user's consent, but I'd expect ubuntu to give the average user (the
ones who this distro is designed for) a way to clean that up.

This is not ubuntu-studio specific, but since it came up, I had to vent
a bit. Old kernels and their modules occupy quite some space. Mind, I'm
not necessarily talking about upgrades to new distro release. Each
little kernel update litters the hard disk. Did ubuntu folks really
miss that?

Alrighty then,

Thomas
