So far I have had no trouble with Ubuntu 12.10 Studio 64bit quite
nice.. For standard use I have 12.04 LTS 32bit and have been useing it for
quite awhile.. For Music tho.. the studio would be best.. and there is no
'plug and play' for that to be done anywhere...

I voted for Ubuntu12.10 + KXStudio

It works so perfectly well for me, that I doubted, that qjackctl failed
to catch xruns after the upgrade from 12.04 -- it does not, there simply
are no xruns anymore...

My vote is "Ubuntu Studio 12.04 LTS, Ubuntu 12.12", the later is a typo
and should be 12.10 ;). It seems to be, that Ubuntu/Ubuntu Studio users
prefer the LTS, so do I.

For me it's reasonable that so many people use Arch Linux. I only
dropped it (perhaps temporarily), regarding to the transition to
systemd.

FWIW, the release model is discussed in the Xubuntu mailing list.

Re: [Fwd: [Poll] Changing permissions on raw1394]

2007-11-30 Thread Pietro Bergamo
Hi, Andrew.
I don't know if it would be the case to deal with what I'm going to write
about in this app your are developing. If it isn't, please just ignore this
post. My trouble is to set jack to accept the 4 outs my Audigy soundcard has as
independent channels. I've been trying to do so since I first started using
Linux with Demudi about 2 years ago with no luck. Alsa recongnizes and adresses
them correctly (with speaker test and alsa mixer), but I can't make it with
jack nor with pd. I found some changes to be done at the .asoundrc file at the
Alsa unofficial wiki, but that didn't work either. I've been doing the best I
can, but being a musician and not a computer programmer, it's been quite a
tough time trying to unveil all these magic spells to configure things by hand.
I'd really apreciate it if this could be done in a more intuitive way. Or maybe
I just should start saving money for another soundcard. :^)
  Thanks anyway.
  Best regards,
  Pietro

Hey everyone!

If you have not heard about it already, the Ubuntu Studio team is
looking at creating an app that would easily allow users to change
common settings that they may be currently editing by hand.[1]

One of the features that we are considering is changing the permissions
on raw1394 /etc/udev/rules.d/40-permissions.rules from disk to audio or
video. This is a necessary change currently to enable firewire based
devices to work as a regular user, such as firewire sound cards and
video cameras.

The other alternative solution is to add the user to group "disk",
though this may also cause problems.

The issue with this is that it creates a rather large security risk for
the system, in that any device on the firewire bus can run with root
privileges. This risk is less of an issue for stand-alone machines that
do not use Ethernet over firewire, but is still something to consider.

I would like to stress that it _will not_ be changed by default. All
that we are considering is providing a more accessible way to modify
those settings.

In the future, when Ubuntu and by extension Ubuntu Studio move to the
new firewire stack in the kernel, this issue will be an non-issue. The
new kernel stack provides much finer granularity and control over
permissions on specific devices.

The question then I am posing to you guys is this: How many of you
already change this setting by hand?

Thanks,

Andrew

IIRC, it is needed to control the camera via firewire.

While uncommon, the support for Ethernet over firewire does exist.

If you have any suggestions for items that you are currently editing by
hand, consider adding them to

Video cams also? Quite strange - I can download easily from a
mini-dv-cam whithout any hassle. First time I mentioned the
permission-issue was when I used a firewire-soundcard first.

I did this and do not have any problems right now - of course I do notdo
that on a server, it is my Laptop on wich I use the FW-card for mobile
recording. Seriously: I do not see a realworld useage-scenario, whre
adding the user to group disk could be a problem

I never saw a machine using firewire to connect to a network - USB yes
for stuff like Zaurus but FW?

Very good idea: PLUS: such a tool should allow to set stuff like
max_user_freq and limits.conf also...

Hi,

Laurent from France, on my 2 computers, i'd done it each time by hand
with a 1394 pcmcia card Pinnacle + video camera Canon MV10 or standard
pci/1394 and the same video camera.

Many friends have to do the same by hand

Laurent
