 Hi,

Just looking at updating from 9.10 to 10.04 and was wondering...

 - has 10.04 got an rt kernel?

NO for the i386 and a preemptive for the 64bit version, also available RT
kernels at abogani PPA

 - has 10.04 incorporated the new firewire stack?

 NO

 - does ffado use the ne firwire stack?

No, FFADO project doesn't use yet

 - does 10.04 have the latest ffado, jack, and Ardour?

No the latest, FFADO is quite up to date, jack is a stable version, because
its on the main repos, and ardour is on 2.8.6

A -rt kernel is available in the official Ubuntu repositories, however, it
is based on the 2.6.31 kernel. This should be contrasted with the -generic
kernel that is also available but is based on 2.6.32.

So, you could choose to use the 2.6.31 -rt kernel but you would chance
loosing the improvements that the 2.6.32 affords.

Lastly, I would point out that I have been recording with the 2.6.32
-generic kernel and have been having a smashing good time with it. With an
M-Audio Delta 44 (and even the Soundblaster Live) card I have been recording
with a latency of 11 msecs and not having any xruns (except when starting
another application of course).

If, however, you find that the -generic kernel is not enough for you,
Alessio Bogani (the Ubuntu Studio Team kernel guru) has suggested trying the
-preempt kernel next, especially on laptops because this kernel flavor
doesn't sacrifice power saving features (important for battery life). This
kernel may not be available for 32 bit machines as Ricardo mentions.

If the -preempt kernel isn't enough, then Alessio suggests using the
-lowlatency kernel next.

And lastly, if nothing else scratches your low latency itch, then you can
try the -rt kernel.

I hope you find this information helpful.

Hello all,
Quick question... I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 and I've retained the RT
kernel (is that right?)... Since upgrading I've been having issues (e.g.
Ardour crashing because it is too slow, JACK crashing or experiencing xrun
errors, etc.). Should I just do a fresh install and use the generic? I'm
using a firewire device (Edirol FA-101) to multi-track. What are other
advantages with fresh installs over upgrading?

Thanks in advance.

Craig, Do a fresh install. its better and less time consuming than fiddling
around with some problems, there are some changes between the 2 versions.
I am using the generic Kernel and also the FA-101 without problems in here.

With the -rt kernel, how is JACK set up? Since were using the same device,
could you send a screenshot with your JACK setup screen(s)? I'm just
worried that all my fiddling will be for naught if I perform a fresh US
 install. Thanks for your help.

at the moment i dont have here the FA-101, but serely I can share my settigs
with you. and yes it was with generic kernel. Just install it, jack will be
pre configured. then go to ubuntustudio controls and enable raw1394. On
qjackctl create a new profile on the setup, choose firewire as the driver
and then use the periods as 3 (2 doesnt work with me on firewire devices)
and then try it.
