[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 562900] Re: Please include translations from Launchpad in the package

2011-11-29 Thread Martin Pitt
Note that this change probably won't be effective yet. The blacklist in
the buildds is apparently modified. I reported
https://portal.admin.canonical.com/48439 a month ago about this, you can
use that URL to track the status.

A lot of strings that are translated and have been displayed in German
in Maverick before but do not seem to have changed are shown in
English in Natty. This includes desktop notifications which are
important and should appear in German. See attached screenshot for an
  example.

Another string is »%n document queued«.
  config-printer/+pots/system-config-
  printer/de/+translate?batch=10&show=all&search=document+queued) This
string has been translated in 2008!

All of these strings have been translated in Launchpad long before the
release of Natty. Therefore it's not a translation bug but seems to be
a package problem or some other bug.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 562900] Re: Please include translations from Launchpad in the package

2011-11-29 Thread Gabor Kelemen
If we want this fixed, update-notifier should be added to the blacklist of
pkgbinarymangler, as a first step.
Next step would be exporting the translations at nonlanguagepackfreeze and
rebuilding the package.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 877195] Re: Move statistics updating outside the web browser code

2011-11-29 Thread Gary Poster
Dirk is right. The fix is in progress. The new bug, given another
number because it is a separate regression and because people are
reporting it, is bug 897565

Title:
Move statistics updating outside the web browser code

Status in Launchpad itself:
  Fix Committed
Status in Ubuntu Translations:
  New

Bug description:
At the moment, we have a lot of problems with translation statistics
not being updated real-time even though we make every attempt to do
so. I am suspecting this fails mostly due to timeouts in POSTs when we
  issue POFile.updateStatistics() call.

We have so far solved this with band-aids like cronscripts/rosetta-
  pofile-stats.py and cronscripts/rosetta-pofile-stats-daily.py, which
have their own problems (bug 622668 and bug 781274). These scripts
became even more important since message-sharing was introduced,
because POFile.updateStatistics() updated the statistics only on a
single POFile that was being touched, even though changes on its
messages affect "sharing" POFiles as well. pofile-stats-daily script
specifically has logic to find these "sharing" files, though it might
  be incomplete.

Instead of trying to fix our band-aids, we should fix the root cause
instead. We know that sometimes it's going to be impossible to both
save all the changes on a single +translate page *and* calculate the
statistics (eg. ddtp-ubuntu templates are over 40k messages total) in
a single POST, and we also know that statistics being very up-to-date
real-time is not essential (we have gotten translators used to them
being a week or so behind; having them eg. 5 minute behind at *most*
  would be a huge improvement).

So, we should instead decouple translation saving from statistics update. I
propose we move any updateStatistics calls from the browser code (though, there
should be only one) to a job which is scheduled to run whenever there are
changes to a POFile. We should also extend updateStatistics call to support
finding all the sharing POFiles as well (all the potentially touched POFiles).
The same should be done for POTemplate.newPOFile callsite which is called
from within the browser code as well.

Other updateStatistics callsites (eg. in model/pofile.py and another
one in model/potemplate.py importFromQueue) are related to imports
which are already de-coupled from the browser code, so can (and
should) stay "inline". Having them fix the statistics for all the
sharing POFiles would be nothing but an improvement.

Once all of the above is done, we should be able to kill rosetta-
pofile-stats-daily.py script, and leave rosetta-pofile-stats.py script
around just in case we want to run it manually (we should remove it
from the crontab or at least make is less common). Since it would go
over all the POFiles, we should ensure that one doesn't try to find
all the sharing POFiles when it's calling updateStatistics on one
  POFile.

Fixing this bug would solve bug 781274 (a critical regression) and bug
622668, thus marking this one as critical and adding notes there.

  Fix up i18n support

Status in Ubuntu Translations:
  Fix Released
Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
This started in bug #775659, where check-new-release-gtk's i18n system
was seen coughing (again). During fixing that bug, It turned out that
many more executables are coughing as well. Let's see what's wrong
  here:

  - check-new-release-gtk: see
  https://launchpadlibrarian.net/85548451/notsupported.png - strings
appear untranslated again, like the window title. This is because my
patch for bug #775659 removed the "from gettext import gettext as _"
line, but later it came back: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
  core-dev/update-manager/main/revision/2153#check-new-release-gtk

This is apparently incompatible with gettext.install(), or more
precisely: the gettext API and the class-based API are incompatible.

Simply removing the mentioned line fixes the localization of strings
from c-n-r-g, but not of those in the popup window. Those are from
UpdateManager/UpdateManager.py, which has an "import gettext as _"
line, like most of update-managers source files do - incompatibility
  strikes again.

I propose to get rid of the use of the class-based API entirely, and
fall back to the gettext one. The original reason to use it was bug
#557804, and that problem can be worked around (with a few lines
stolen from aptdaemon) until Python 3 comes to our rescue.

  - do-release-upgrade, update-manager: these work fine as of now, but
because of the above, gettext.install() must be replaced and the
  --help crash worked around.

  - update-manager-text: this does not use gettext.install(), but
plainly crashes when called with --help.

  - ubuntu-support-status: this has only a stub of i18n support.

Also the last two are not listed in POTFILES.in.

I'll propose a branch to merge that fixes all of these problems.

This is not ideal from i18n POV, because it adds a quite visible string,
which is not translatable, because
  - the policy.in file is not listed in POTFILES.in
  - even if it were, Synaptic is now in Universe, so we have no

I think it is related, but I do not know how big is the difference in
strings between the old and the new version. Roughly, looks like 40
strings.

Also, consider that there is the problem of the statistics not
updating, but this looks like is not the case for Catalan: the 115
strings are real untranslated strings.

Ciao.

Hm, good point. I see that in Catalan there are now 115 untranslated
strings, but I can't remember if it's because we didn't have the chance
to translate it before release or because of the new oneiric-proposed
upload (templates are always imported from -proposed).

Milo, you've been following this more closely, do you think the recent
upload caused the untranslated strings?

Regards,
David.

Ah, excellent, thanks for finding out and subscribing us to it.

It is marked as Critical, so we've got very good chances that it's fixed
soon.

Cheers,
David.

[Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 897654] [NEW] Untranslated strings in update-manager

2011-11-29 Thread Gabor Kelemen
Public bug reported:

There are some untranslated strings in update-manager:
- in update-manager-text, the Updates header and the Changelog placeholder
- in UpdateManager/Core/DistUpgradeFetcherCore.py, status strings visible after
starting do-release-upgrade
- ubuntu-support-status has most of its strings not marked for translations,
now that bug 897276 is fixed it's time to start translating those too.

Proposed branch fixes these.
