Re: [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] About bosnianuniversetranslation Project
Hello Samir, thanks for getting back to me. I added Jeoren, Laura and David in CC, they are all involved with translations in Launchpad and Ubuntu, and might give you an idea of what can be done or what are the issues we are facing. What you are doing is remarkable, we really do not want to stop you from doing it, I hope my first message was not misleading on that front. As it stands today, though, some of that work might be void due to how "universe" translations work in Launchpad. As long as you are actively sending "upstream" (to the original projects) all the translations done, that's fine, but that will be a manually task, probably even in the future. The problem we are facing is on how you set up the project: https://launchpad.net/bosnianuniversetranslation And in particular the translation part: https://translations.launchpad.net/bosnianuniversetranslation If I go there, at the translation link, I can start translating even into my own language, or even into your own language: the translation policy is set to open. This can, and probably will, lead to work that will never be used if somebody discovers the project and starts translating into their own language. What is possible to do, might be this: - Set up a new translation *group* dedicated to this task - Add the Bosnian translation team as member to this group, or even set up a separate Bosnian translation team for the universe packages, administerd also by the Bosnian translation team - Ask your students to join the Bosnian translation team, or the newly created team - Set the permission of the translation to Restricted, so that only the people in the group and the team can translate With time, it would even be possible to grow this group into a full translation group dedicated for translating Ubuntu universe packages. Some links about translations in Launchpad and Ubuntu: https://help.launchpad.net/Translations https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations Let us know what you think! [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] Project bosniauniversetranslation
Hello everyone, yesterday on IRC we had a discussion with Laura (in CC), David and Jeroen regarding this team on Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/bosnianuniversetranslation I contacted the owne of the project, what follows is his reply: ## Quoting Milo Casagrande : Well, let me give some bit of history. I teach Operating Systems course at University of Sarajevo, and my students can choose kind of homework for 10% of the final grade. The most of students prefer to translate Ubuntu to Bosnian language. Yearly they are about 60 students who participate in this project. In previous years, Launchpad allowed translation of KDE and big part of GNOME, so there was enough job for all of them. Launchpad is wonderful for coordinating such project, it has big translation memory, and I do not need to send po files to every student. And it is much better and faster than Pootle. But Launchpad Ubuntu started to decline, it first dropped XFCE, then ekiga, then synaptics, then Firefox, then many GNOME applications, then KOffice and finally all of KDE. In Ubuntu repository alone there is no enough strings for all participants. As sending po files by E-mail is not practical, I set up this repository. Currently I use it for translating KDE (Bosnian only), until yesterday 4.9, and now I started to translate 4.10. My students used this repository to translate KDE 4.9 and I uploaded it on December 21 to upstream KDE (about 35000 new strings), so it is not true that is was not used anywhere else (however only for Bosnian language). I have also access to LibreOffice upstream, and currently I negotiate with GNOME. I had one problem with exporting, though. After exporting, Launchpad Contributors in Your Names field is messy, and repeated after each exporting. So, I had to manually fix it. The semester is approaching to its end, so I do not expect large activity on bosnianuniversetranslation after January 24. However, is there any hope, that this "wait a litle bit" for general universe translation site will be ready before September 2013? There are promises for it since 2008, but I am only witness of reduction of main repository. ### The project seems also, in some way, reasonable, looks like they are working with upstream too. Only they are importing an enormous amount of PO files, for one team's sake. I'm not so sure how to deal with it in this case... any suggestions? [Ubuntu-translations-coordinators] [Bug 213457] Re: The "Boot Options" (F6) string does not fit in given space for all languages
** Package changed: gfxboot-theme-ubuntu (Ubuntu) => gfxboot (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Translations Coordinators, which is subscribed to Ubuntu Translations. Matching subscriptions: Ubuntu Translations bug mail https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/213457 Title: The "Boot Options" (F6) string does not fit in given space for all languages Status in Ubuntu Translations: Triaged Status in “gfxboot” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: Binary package hint: gfxboot-theme-ubuntu When pressing F6 on the boot menu, the boot options appear. There is the string "Boot Options", a small space and the kernel options follow. For many languages the string "Boot Options" does not fit in the given space, and the translated text is cut-off. Also there is no space between that an the kernel options, making the latter hard to read. I attach 2 screenshots, one for English (correct) and one for Greek (incorrect). The Greek text should be "Ρυθμίσεις εκκίνησης" and it only shows "Ρυθμίσεις εκκί".
