request for release notes translations

2010-04-20 Thread Steve Langasek
Greetings to you, O Ubuntu microcosm of linguistic variation!

We're at that time of the release cycle again where the release notes are
coming together, and your help is needed to translate them. The Ubuntu
10.04 LTS release candidate is coming Thursday, so we want to make sure our
users get useful information when clicking that link from within the live
CD installer.

Draft release notes for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes. While these are not
yet final, I expect that all the issues documented there will be included in
the final release notes.

And as for past releases, please use
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes/langcode
for your translations. When you are ready to have these translations linked
from the Ubuntu website, please post a link to your translation on this wiki
page:

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes/Translations

Using this format:

  [[link-to-translation|LANG]] completed date by person

Thanks,

apt.conf does not exist by default. However, I'm not sure we want to give a
specific command for this in the release notes, as opposed to leaving it as
a question of using your editor to make the change; generally speaking,
turning off auto-installation of recommends is not going to give very
satisfactory results for the average user, so if a user doesn't already know
how to edit config files on their system, I don't think we should be giving
them a loaded gun to shoot themselves in the foot with.

is there a deadline for translators/translations or the sooner the

The sooner the better. Translation links can be added even after the
release, but of course the longer this is delayed, the less effective it

//In accordance with the Debian Policy Manual (which says The 'Recommends'

packages listed in the Recommends: field of other installed packages as well
as Depends: by default. If you want to avoid this for specific packages, use
apt-get --no-install-recommends; if you want to make this permanent, set
APT::Install-Recommends in /etc/apt/apt.conf. //

The Tamil equivalent is in progess an I need a clarification here on the
above cited paragraph.

Is it right,

//If you want to avoid this for specific packages, use
apt-get --no-install-recommends; if you want to make this permanent, set
APT::Install-Recommends in /etc/apt/apt.conf //

Or should it be,

//If you want to avoid this for specific packages, use
apt-get --no-install-recommends; if you want to make this permanent, remove
APT::Install-Recommends in /etc/apt/apt.conf //

It appears that by default 'apt' will install the recommended packages,
which means entry for it will be there in /etc/apt/apt.conf

So to override that, a User has to remove it from the file? Please clarify.

request for release notes translations

2008-10-22 Thread Steve Langasek
Hi folks,

With the Ubuntu 8.10 release candidate coming up, efforts are underway to
flesh out the release notes so that our early adopters get useful
information when clicking that link from within the live CD installer. And
a part of that is that we would like to have the release notes translated as
widely as possible.

Draft release notes for Ubuntu 8.10 are available at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseNotes. While these are not yet
final, I expect that all the issues documented there will be included in the
final release notes.

Please use https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseNotes/langcode for your
translations, and coordinate with Matthew Nuzum
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (cc:ed), when you are ready to have these
translations linked from the Ubuntu website.

Thanks,

If you need all the po files used in Ubuntu, you could easly get them by
downloading language source packages (French translations for example) :

apt-get source language-pack-fr-base language-pack-kde-fr-base

While I understand your point about ensuring that the known
upgrade/install issues are properly documented, I have a certain
amount of sympathy for what the Italian team has done, which appears
to be to make a more user-friendly version of the release notes. I
think it's probably true to say that the release notes currently come
across as a bit technical, and I've seen complaints about that here:

http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5580/

Am I right that there is currently a separate approach towards
producing technical release notes and a more marketable set of
release features with the marketing team? If so, is there any way to
merge these approaches to produce a user-friendly release document
which includes the detail of known upgrade/install issues? If so, is
it desirable?

(Maybe something to think about after release is out the way).

Yes, basically we intend as release notes those informations... we are
targeting only the final release and make use of informations from Beta

For the final release, the release notes document known upgrade/install

It's not a problem! I think we'are going to use a subpage of that page,
we are going to keep that NoteDiRilascio for general use.
