Thats timely, since I just woke this morning and I thought:

"Wouldn't it be a great idea to invite an Open Source Developer from the
(k)Ubuntu community to join the #ubuntu-uk once every couple of months
and we can do a questions and answer session ? Very much in the style of
the Ubuntu Open Week." My very specific aim was to help people gain some
insight into how people get involved and to try and increase awareness
of how we can be reporting back and staying in contact with the upstream
developers. The partiuclary helps us focus on the Mentoring idea Popey
put forward at LWE.

I'll add this to the agenda for this evening.

[ubuntu-uk] A couple of things..

2006-12-18 Thread Michael Wood
Hello ubuntu uk

Got a couple of things i've been thinking about.

--

A guy came into #ubuntu-uk asking how to get involved in open source
software yesterday. We helped him out and pointed him in the right
direction hopefully, but it struck me that the easiest way that we
explained it was through our own experience.
It would be good if people here could note down/blog/send in how they
got involved in any open source projects, especially if you're a
developer as that can be quite confusing.

Then we could compile a list and use that as a resource for helping people.

--

I would also quite like to discuss what people think the role of
ubuntu-uk.org is or should be and if they are interested in the site
being ubuntu.com'ed see http://www.ubuntu-uk.org/dev/new/ for a mock-up

maybe we could stick this on the agenda for the meeting today ?

if lsmod | grep raw1394 lists anything then the module is loaded and
the permissions on /dev/raw are incorrect. sudo chmod 777
/dev/rawwill give you the necessary permissions, although you'll
have to set this manually each time you restart your computer and wish
to use your camcorder. If it still doesnt work then sorry but I'm out of
further ideas.

Followed your instructions and, sure enough, there was the file with
some entries, so I added raw1394. Then I rebooted but, I am sorry to
say, I still get the following error on selecting capture:-

That should allow you to edit the file. If that file is empty then just
type raw1394 on a line by itself and save the file.

It's certainly true that employers don't want to pay for training
unless they have to. If the workforce comes pre-trained in windows
then it's considerably cheaper to use it.

I understand that red hat has 50% of the server market. This doesn't
seem to be known by careers or college staff...

I agree that proprietary unix will die out - but having played with
open bsd I'm really impressed by its quality. I think there will be
(or should be) a future for free unix..

This hasn't filtered down to outside academia. I first used unix at
University, if you've never been to University you may have only ever
used windows.

It appears that the more impressive your set up, the more likely you
are not to be using windows. The poorer your are, and the less
educated your staff, the more likely it is that you are using windows
on the server. *nix is harder, but superior.

> Personally I know both Windows and Linux, my Uni forces me to use
> both.

My adult education college and my Cisco course require me to use
windows. I naturally use linux at home and convert formats as needed.
I've had some concern from staff that my presentations may not be as
good as they see me using what they see as inferior tools.. (In
practice this hasn't been a problem..)

As a future network admin I don't see myself having to deal with
bloody windows 2003 server if I can manage it. I know linux and bsd
are superior.

> To say we can't teach people Linux and Free/Open Source software
> because it isn't used is rubbish.

Mainstream jobs never require linux skills on the desktop - IT at work
for non technical staff *does* mean windows and office alas. It
doesn't mean it always will, but currently microsoft is the defacto
standard.

The fact that it shouldn't be doesn't alter the fact that it is. It's
the fact that IT college staff are telling people that it's the
standard *on the server* is a problem. It clearly isn't, even if
people with windows qualifications would like it to be..

I can only share my own experiences here, but hopefully they will be of
some use to you.

I now run Edgy (6.10) on my laptop and since the upgrade from Dapper,
I've had to do some tweaking of kernel boot options in order for my
IEEE1394 adapter to work. In the output from dmesg, I saw an error
along the lines of "nobody cared, try using irqpoll" (apologies, I don't
have the exact message available now as I've cured, or at least worked
around the problem), which is exactly what I did -- I supplied the
irqpoll option to the kernel from the grub boot screen -- and the
IEEE1394 now seems to work correctly.

If you wanted to try an alternative to Kino, purely for getting the DV
data from the camcorder onto your machine for later processing, you
could try dvgrab. As for video editing, I'm afraid I'm not of much
help, as I haven't got as far as that yet!

Hope that helps,

I personally wouldn't. I wouldn't want the other person to get a negative image
of Ubuntu. Users
shouldn't have to use the command line unless absolutely necessary, and having
them type obscure
commands in a terminal doesn't look particularly nice. IMO.

As I said, I wouldn't upgrade at all if I were you. Dapper works. As the adage
goes "If it ain't
broke, don't fix it".

It's an almost virgin Dapper install with only a couple of extra
applications installed (Thunderbird and Gnomebaker, IIRC), so I should
be OK in this respect.
