Oops, sorry Freddie, I though there were people from here I was still
missing. Thank you.

Now I can't quite figure if I am following you around mailing lists or
you're following me. I'd say it's a draw at the moment! :)

Cheers,
Al.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu-UK forum

2007-01-10 Thread Freddie Ruddick
I have to admit, when I was a new user, I much preferred the Forums
over mailing lists/IRC, mainly (I think) because of the pretty
colours. As time goes on however, I find myself on the forums less and
less, and taking part in mailing list discussions more and more. (I
also seem to end up on IRC most nights).

I think the ideal solution is the one others have mentioned, have it
like ubuntu-users, primarily mailing list, pretty web interface for
those that want/need it.

[ubuntu-uk] Introduction

2007-01-10 Thread Paul Tansom
After my first post I thought I'd better say a proper "Hi" to those that
don't know me. Not sure how active I'll be on here yet, but decided to
join as I'm expecting to use Ubuntu for customer installs (when I can
get them to use Linux on the desktop).

I'm (slowly) coming round to using Ubuntu myself, particularly after
using it on a laptop at a recent event and finding it very quick and
easy to plug a USB key into it and get it recognised. That said I
haven't yet had the time to do and install and get it customised to my
was of working yet - Debian is still far quicker to get setup the way I
like it and works out of the box on more of my machines. I guess I'm
just awkward and like to be too much in control for the 'easy to
install' distributions ;)

All that said, if I can help get Ubuntu working the way I like then it
will soon become my personal distribution of choice as well as my
customer distribution of choice :)

I can almost hear Popey muttering "oh no, who let him in here" ;)

Agreed. I may be a bit slow keeping up on this list at the moment, but
move to a forum (well, one that isn't transparantly accessible via a
mailing list as well) and I'm gone - not a deliberate act of "I'm off",
more a case of I never get back to forums, but do check on mailing lists
as I check through my mail.

Hmm, just though, this is my first post so I ought to add a "Hi" to that
:)

Thanks Robert, I'd forgotten about that site.

Tony, try looking through the contents of that package (which you can
do at the site Robert mentioned if you haven't installed it) to see if
it includes a file like the one Popey mentioned earlier.

I have this package installed together with totem-xine and w32codecs as
suggested by Popey, however, about:plugins reports the Totem Mozilla
plugin but does not list RealVideo as a supported format.

I see there is also a mozilla-helix-player package. Is that relevant?

Tony.

You can look up packages for any version of ubuntu on
http://packages.ubuntu.com/

A search for totem in Dapper:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?keywords=totem&searchon=names&subword=1&version=dapper&release=all

gives the package totem-xine-firefox-plugin

I think this was included in Dapper, but it might be called something
different. Try

apt-cache search totem mozilla

It's the Mozilla/Firefox plugin. Unfortunately, I'm on Edgy so I can't
easily check what the package was called in Dapper.

I'd report this as a bug in Ubuntu 6.10. Include the hardware details
and see what happens.

Have you tried the "safe graphics" option?

IIRC, integrated Intel graphics cards have an open-source Intel driver
available, in other words the open driver supports all functionality
on the card!

You could always try getting a refund since you're not using the
Windows license you've paid for!
