Re: [ubuntu-uk] A GUI Grub editor?

2007-02-28 Thread Andrew Black (delete obvious bit)
I am quite technical and in general prefer hacking text files rather than GUI
editors.

But I find Grub scary. Partly that I know that if I get it wrong I have a
nasty unbooting machine (does grup mean Get wRong and machins is UnBootable).

If find the file created by debian/ ubuntu really hard to understand. I am
not sure whether the issue is
 - the file is complicated per se
 - the version created by the installer is too general/ complex

I am not sure what the answer is but
 - from my techy perspective I would like to take the file apart and
understand/ simplify it (on a machine that doesnt matter too much if I loose
it for a day!)
 - from a more general perspective some form of GUI would be a good idea.

A parallel - the oreilly book on apache security suggests that you throw away
the all singing / dancing config generated by whatever distribution you have
and construct one you understand.

[ubuntu-uk] (K)ubuntu 6.10 Inspiron 1100 boot up screen not visible

2007-02-28 Thread alan c
I installed Kubuntu 6.10 on a Dell Inspiron 1100 Laptop recently, and
the boot up screens - kubuntu splash logo and the running text(?)
(progress bar?) - cannot be seen.

The live CD for 6.10 has problems with screen resolution and does not
seem to complete even with the Safe graphics mode, I have to use the
boot option F6 and append
live vga=771

As it happens, 6.06 live CD boots normally for the laptop.
With 6.10 how can I influence what screen resolution is used for
initial boot activities?

Background details:
I know that this particular model of laptop has a problem with the
bios not knowing or reporting the screen size, resolution properly -
even a Dell CD install of XP produces a problem to be solved with
particular driver magic.

Anyway, the normal display is fine because I edited the xorg.config

This shouldn't be a problem: If you create a backup of the file before you
start editing it, you should just be able to boot your system of an Ubuntu
CD and restore the file.

You could try booting from the hard disk and editing the GRUB option
to append vga=771 to the kernel line. If this works, edit the file
/boot/grub/menu.lst and add it to the end of the commented kopt
line. Then do a (if I remember correctly) dpkg --reconfigure grub and
it should update all the kernel lines with the specified vga option.

Then Bob's your Aunty's live-in lover.

[ubuntu-uk] UK Patent Laws

2007-02-28 Thread Benjamin Webb
I thought I'd point out
http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page11077.asp , the response to the
petition to stop software patents. Apparently software patents are
already illegal in the UK.

Does this mean that it is legal for us to install MP3 codecs
(including using automatix) or are these patented as algorthims rather
than just software.

Thanks, I'd like to know whether what I do is legal :)

Don't believe you can patent an algorithm either.

yes software patents arn't and have never been acknowledged by the uk
government, that petition was about keeping it that way. you can install
mp3 codecs and the like just fine, although i implore you to never ever
use automatix, its unsupported and you will find no help from most other
ubuntu users, its caused us a lot of headaches in the past.

Yes, you should just follow https://wiki.ubuntu.com/RestrictedFormats in
future; or at least until Feisty and easy-codec-installation is out.

Well according to the patent office the following is not patentable:
 (c) a scheme, rule or method for performing
a mental act, playing a game or doing
  business, or a program for a computer;

Of course I Am Not A Lawyer.

Then the 'DRM' they need is only allow UK IP's to view the content; much
like they already have for some news features.

I know this can be easily worked around with a proxy server; but it's no
easier than than the DRM they are planning.

I suspect another major issue is the 'self[ish]-destruct after a fixed
time period. The BBC can avoid this with an agreement, the users
promises to be bound with - to delete the content after x days.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Can't install Ubuntu

2007-02-28 Thread Dave Walker
Hi Fredy,

Some people do find that the 'live cd' install does have problems with
certain hardware. In these cases it is recommended to use the
'alternate' cd.

For version 6.06 this can be downloaded from:
http://ubuntu-releases.datahop.it/6.06/ubuntu-6.06.1-alternate-i386.iso

Kind Regards,
