Beryl runs very well on my laptop + intel 915 onboard graphics card. No noticeable slow down whatsoever, unless I use the "blur" plugin (which really isn't worth using IMHO). You don't need a high performance nVidia or ATI card to run Beryl/Compiz, by any means. IIRC, the first demo videos/development of Compiz were done on an intel onboard graphics card. > does have a few issues though - but that's the fun of it - you can get > involved in developing it - like all linux stuff - no matter what level > you are... from the wishlist to giving offerings... > > you're the navigator (or at least 'a' navigator(!) > > good luck! > > > > On Sat, 31 Mar 2007 22:59:34 +0100, STONE COLD <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > wrote: > > > > > hi,Im wanting to install some eye candy on my edgy 6.10. i would like to > > install the flashy cube thing (sorry im new :) The only thing is im > > running a AMD Athlon XP2000+. Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu cube graphics
The 3D desktop is really cool and once you turn down some of the more extreme features it becomes a positive improvement to productivity. Your big problem is the VIA chipset. There is a big black hole/blind spot, Linux has little or no support for "Chrome" graphics cards. My laptop is new and there is no drivers what so ever. If you are running a older kit you may be in luck. You should be able to get the 2D drivers working with a lot luck and work you may be able to get the 3D working. I'm not sure if this will be enough for Beryl to work, as I gave up on getting the drivers for my laptop I didn't investigate any further. I'm stuck with the standard Vesta drivers! If your motherboard has a AGP slot your in luck and a cheap card should do the job nicely. http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-FX2128 £26.44 On 4/1/07, baz <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > On Sat, 2007-03-31 at 21:59 +, STONE COLD wrote: > > hi, > > > > Im wanting to install some eye candy on my edgy 6.10. i would like to > > install the flashy cube thing (sorry im new :) > > > > The only thing is im running a AMD Athlon XP2000+. Consequently, his memory's very poor - the equivalent of about 128 meg of RAM by today's standards! I'm convinced that if you had some sort of forum that's more likely to appreciate the context of the challenges you face with your computing, you'd become less 'thickie' faster, not least because you'd benefit from, and be able to contribute to, its collective wisdom. I'm a bit disappointed with the apparent lack of any follow-up on this. I'll keep an eye out for people who might want to chase it up. I don't know about you, but the seniors I know would love to have this option. I personally am happy, for the moment, to stand on the side lines of the exotic discussions that go on because they are sampling what may happen to me in the future (providing my thickie problems are solved for me when I ask for help). But to someone coming fresh to the computer world, who are potentially the vast majority, the exotic discussions could be very discouraging. Possibly the dedicated telephone support would be taken up more enthusiastically by the average poor communicator. After all we all have to start by asking if the power is switched on at the wall.
