I got a Dell with windows. 6400 1.6ghz dual core, 1gb ram, 256 ATI gfx...
The machine is amazing. The build quality is substantially better than any
of the other currently available laptops. I am so glad I got this little
machine.

[ubuntu-uk] Gutsy release party: The Pembury Tavern

2007-10-08 Thread John Levin
Hi all,

I visited the Pembury Tavern, the venue I suggested for the Gutsy London
launch party.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/GutsyReleaseParty

It's a nice large pub, one room but with a spur to the right that we
could ensconce ourselves in. No music, jukebox or piped; no tv; very
good beers reasonably priced.

Travel is quite good; no underground nearby but plenty of buses and
Hackney Central / Downs overground stations are close. There is some
parking (but not advisable if you're drinking):
http://www.individualpubs.co.uk/pembury/where.html

Interest whetted?

John

There where 3 main reasons I bought it.
1. I wanted to support a big manufacturer putting linux onto
desktop/laptop machines, as unless people support it, it won't take off.
2. It was fantastic to have a machine turn up at the door that worked
with what I wanted out of the box. No more opening the box then
reformatting/sorting out hardware problems etc
3. I didn't buy it. Being a penniless student my old man purchased it
for me. He trusts Dell with his card details rather than some other name
he might not have heard of.

Mainly though I got it for points 1 and 2, though having it as I wanted
it more or less out of the box was a really big boon for me as I enjoy
being lazy :-)

well pay the extra and get the 30 days support just incase an update causes

Also, if you're considering a laptop as an addition or replacement to

There's also the fact that you're showing Dell support. Proving that
there are people out there who will buy a PC with non-Windows.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Who's got/ordered Dell Ubuntu Laptops?

2007-10-08 Thread Daniel Lamb
Why buy the Dell laptop then?(and not another cheaper or maybe more
expensive but better model)

Surely the point in buying a Dell Ubuntu laptop is that there is support
with it to help setup the pc, isn't this is more an end user thing?

Or am I being stupid?

Regards,
Daniel

No idea, but since I didn't buy into the support package, I don't
suppose it really makes any difference to me. The only reason I'd need
to contact Dell is if there was a hardware fault. Most OS/Software
faults I can diagnose/repair myself.

Alan,

From the meeting notes page "This is the 14th meeting of the UKTeam,
starting at 20:30 GMT and finishing at 21:30 BST". Which is it GMT or BST?

Apologies. If you think it needs editing, edit it. :)

I love wikis :)

Not quite on topic, though not far off, but I wonder... what's the situation
regarding support from Dell if you choose to upgrade your Ubuntu or tweak
the settings?

Is it possible to invalidate a warranty or lose support by moving away from
the version that comes pre-installed?

Hi Rob,

That's only Java 7, which isn't released yet. Java 6 is still under
proprietary license, although it's available for Linux distros to
bundle.

Hi Alan,

Just one point about the announcement template. Our cousins across the
pond use the verb "table" to mean that something won't be discussed at
a meeting. I wonder if it might be better to find a different term, in
order to keep the meaning clear?

I certainly didn't have any problems. It upgraded to the Gutsy beta
