Re: [ubuntu-uk] Mobile internet proxy

2008-02-19 Thread Johnathon Tinsley

You can make apache act as a web proxy, using the mod_proxy extention.
Obviously, you have to be careful with your configuration, as spammers like
using open proxies.

You can then use the standard compression module for apache, and that should do
what you're after...

I've been pondering upon the possibility of setting up a vps as a

It would be good to add image transcoding (to reduce the size of
images on the fly before serving to mobile internet) and also on the
fly gzip content encoding compression to reduce the size of html etc.

Has anyone come across this before in practice? I've hunted around
google for info, and although I've found this squid patch -
http://devel.squid-cache.org/gzip/ for the gzip stuff I don't know
 how
well it's implemented (in cvs only by the look of it) and I can't
 seem
to find anything on image transcoding.

If anyone has any info I'm all ears :-)

2008-02-19 Thread Chris Rowson
I've been pondering upon the possibility of setting up a vps as a
  mobile internet proxy.

I've did pretty much that that, using squid. Instead of image
transcoding, I simply replaced all images with a 1x1 pixel transparent
GIF. The result was effectively a text only proxy, ideal for keeping
laptop GPRS bills down. It was simple and worked rather well.

I stopped using it when I discovered the Image Show Hide addon for
 Firefox!

Note that it is incredibly easy to misconfigure Squid so that it proxies
all kinds of things, like SMTP for spammers. Oops.

Heh - tell me about it. I run a dansguardian/squid web content
filtering proxy at work, and one of the other techies I work with saw
it and thought it'd be a good idea to set up something similar on a
VPS so that his friends and families could use it to keep their kids
safe...

He became quite exasperated his server nearly brought down by the
volume of traffic going through it!

Ive just tried to access mowser.com using my three mobile phone and
got a site blocked message. After querying this with three tech
  support, the chaps says:

Three filters web content using an internet watch foundation blocklist
and so if the website is on the list you are not allowed to access it.

Although I understand why a proxy like mowser.com would be on the
list, its besides the point. This is absolutely bloomin' ridiculous!
How on earth can mobile internet companies get away with content
  filtering?

I dont understand why mowser.com should be on the IWF list. Their list
contains URLs of sites known to contain material relating to child
sexual abuse and mowser.com appears to be a proxy!

You could complain to the IWF!

BTW, I have no problem with anyone blocking access to such sites,
 providing it is accurate!

 Regards,
 Tony.

Hi Tony,

It'll be on the IWF list because mowser would allow someone to access
an inappropriate site through in this manner.
http://mowser.com/web/www.dodgybannedwebsite.com

I just don't think it's three's job to police the internet however...

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Setting PATH and other env variables

2008-02-19 Thread Sean Miller
I think there's some misunderstanding here... if you put .bash_profile in
your home directory the settings will be applied.

BUT, the way that it works is that the settings are applied at the time of
LOGIN, therefore if you simply open new Gnome sessions the script won't be
run, as the new window will simply inherit the details at the time of
login...

You can prove this by adding...

export YYY=1

...to the bottom of .bash_profile, and then typing su - username and
your password...

$ env | grep YYY

...should return...
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ su - seanmiller
Password:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$ env | grep YYY
YYY=1
[EMAIL PROTECTED] ~]$

If you then log out of Gnome altogether and re-login you should find that
your environment is as you wish it to be on every terminal window you open.

Hope that helps,

Sean

Vodafone and BT Mobile also, by default, block non-approved domains. You
can call them to get this restriction lifted.

I hit this when investigating spam in my role as manager of anti-spam
development at MessageLabs!

I've never hit this on O2, however, but then I don't do a lot of data
use on O2.

The mobile companies do have a fair point about this, as a large
proportion of their mobile data users are children. However, any
feature that cannot be turned off is a bug, as they say.

Enter your password at the top of the field (where it says Enter your present

Then click Save Changes

According to a friend of mine...

The IWF watchlist is an optional thing for ISPs to do but they and the govt
have hinted that unless all UK ISPs use it then they might make it law.
It's very difficuly to tell whether the site you are trying to visit is
blocked because it's blocked by IWF, and viewing it knowing that it is
blocked by IWF is illegal. Members of the IWF have a dispensation from the
govt to view the stuff that is blocked, but for anyone else it's illegal.
The IWF list is only supposed to list child abuse and incitement to hatred,
so the site you are after (mowser.com) is probably blocked on some other
list, which your ISP will likely never admit to.

I image that three are blocking that particular site either because a)
it allows people to defeat existing content filtering because it is a
proxy or b) because it is designed to reduce the data transfer
required when browsing the web from a mobile phone (and they won't
want that).

I don't believe that viewing sites on a block list is illegal in
itself (i.e. if a proxy was on the IWF blocklist, and you use it to
view bbc.co.uk you aint' breaking the law) but if you where to view a
site from the child abuse section you of course would be breaking the
law (but because it's a child abuse site and not because it's on the
IWF watchlist).

Because part of the job I do at the mo involves providing internet
access to the public, every now and again a situation occurs were
someone views something illegal. We can only make a copy of that
material for evidence purposes on the instruction (and usually in the
presence) of a police officer.

This thing with three has got up my nose though lol!!!

Looks like Elonex are rebranding these PCs. At least there's a bit
 more techie info here.

IMHO compared to the eee they look _awful_. Looks like it would be top heavy
having all the gubbins in the screen (given it _is_ an digital picture frame
with a keyboard attached). I can't imagine it would be ergonomically
pleasant to use on anything other than a flat table. Given it has a brace
(as you'd get with a picture frame), and _all_ the weight is in the screen,
I can't see it standing up on its own without that brace.

Also having the wired net connection come into the device half way up the
screen just looks like a recipie for a strained connector resulting in rapid
deterioration.

Cheers,
Al.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Notebook Problems

2008-02-19 Thread Jai Harrison
Hey All,

I believe I've solved the problem and that it would be useful to share
my solution in case anyone else encounters the same problem (and to
also help Andrew Oakley track the errors down for Hardy).

I selected Do Nothing for When laptop lid is closed under Power
Management and since then I haven't encountered any problems. Blank
Screen seems to be the cause of the problem.

It's probably also worth noting that I have Display and Computer
inactivity inflicted sleep settings also set to Never but the
problem still occurred after that but before modifying the When
laptop lid is closed setting.

I'm probably going to backup my home folder and reinstall Ubuntu.
After doing so I'll make sure NOT to copy over everything from my home
folder but only essentials (in case something in there is the cause of
  this).

Unless anyone has an easier solution?

Create a new user under your current install, and start from scratch. If
the system still fails then it isn't something in your ~

 Cheers,
 Al.

When Be first implemented this they (allegedly) used the rather crude
method of turning the specific URLs provided by the IWF provided into IP
address. The effect of this is that completely innocent sites which reside
on the same IP as dodgy sites were blocked along with the bad stuff.

I completely agree, however, as a £99, very lower power, x86 PC to run
IPCop on, it's making me grin already...

Main points -
USB port to plug in a USB adsl modem - Check...
Wired ethernet port to connect to a network switch - Check...
Onboard 54G wireless to WPA connect to the laptop - Check...
Plug in a USB wireless dongle for a crippled WEP connection for the kids
Nintendo DS's - Check...

Bonus points include -
The thing is tiny (around the size of my adsl router)
Very low power
No Hard drive
7 monitor :) built in
No fans - no noise.

Hmmm

Yes, it was on the fontastic site that I saw the wifi is an optional extra.

I've got a little boy (nearly 4, starts school this year) who is
always trying to play with mummy and daddys computer. I think one of
these would be a pretty cool present for him to muck about with. As a
serious PC though I don't know that it'd be much cop.

It makes me laugh that all the screen shots have IE6 on them. We have
no idea about the GUI of the OS...

 Nope, easier than that ;)

 Go here:
 https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk

Scroll to the bottom of the page, enter your email address into the box to
the left of the button that says Unsubscribe or edit options

 Click the button

Enter the password that you set when you signed up to the list (you can
use a reminder if you want)

You can now change your address in the top-left two fields, just enter the
new email address, and click Change address and name.

 HTH,

 Johnathon

Does anyone have any ideas why Synaptic and add/remove programs would
both be insisting on using a proxy that is no longer configured? I've
not only disabled, but removed the configuration information for the

information (in fact Synaptic seems to have deleted it). Sadly using
aptitude on the command line was also insisting on using a proxy until I
rebooted! I can now upgrade things, but not through Synaptic. That's
fine by me in terms of being able to use things, but wouldn't be so good
for a normal end user, and does leave me wondering what else may be
 broken.

If you use proxy or firewall, don't forget to open port 53.
It's used by Ubuntu to get update from Repository Server

If you use iptable for your firewall, you can open using command below:
# ALLOWING DNS to Access to your firewall
iptables -A OUTPUT -p udp -o eth0 --dport 53 --sport 1024:65535 -j
ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -p udp -i eth0 --sport 53 --dport 1025:65535 -j
ACCEPT
