Are you actually using this thing as an ADSL modem or just as a router?

If you're not using the ADSL functionality perhaps it's time to invest in a
cheap switch.

Some routers have an ADSL modem built in ... one way to tell if this is
the case is to see if there is a socket on the router that the adsl

Sorry if you've said this already, but do you have a 3rd machine to test
with (preferably one which you know has no network issues) - it may help
with eliminating which link in the chain is broken.

[ubuntu-uk] How to back up Dovecot IMAP?

2008-05-16 Thread Andrew Oakley

I currently have all my email stored on a Dovecot IMAP server on my
Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 server. I intend to upgrade this to Hardy using a
total wipe, reformat and clean install (I have lots of crud on Dapper,
such as Beryl, Automatix etc).

First I would like to back up everything on the IMAP server. How do I do
this please?

Then, how do I restore this to a clean install of Dovecot?

Ideally I'd like to write a nice cron-able script that creates a .tar.gz
file, but anything that works will do. For the longer term, how can I
perform incremental Dovecot IMAP backups (say, only the last 7 days
worth of mail)?

If it makes a difference, I am the only IMAP user on the server.

Couldn't find anything immediately relevant with Google, but links to
RTFM-esque articles would much appreciated. Thanks,

[ubuntu-uk] Desktop wallpaper, icons and bluetooth broken in Hardy

2008-05-16 Thread Jack Knight
Well, wallpaper and icons *were* working, until yesterday's package
updates. I get a message about HAL failing to start on login now also.

I 'm running compiz-fusion on dual head with NVidia 7000 series card
with 512Mb. Both screens are at 1280x1024. Apart from the above, cube
etc. works OK. Only google results I can find relate to a similar
scenario using different resolutions on dual screens.

Since upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy, now unable to send files over
bluetooth TO the PC from a phone. Can do in opposite direction.

Any ideas welcome.

My honest advice would be a move back to 7.10. There are so many issues
with 8.04 it is untrue and for an LTS release that would suggest well tested
and stable, it is nothing more than a bad joke I'm afraid; and I have placed
an embargo on the release until it is stable and hopefully a cd respin i.e.
8.04.1 is done that I can use without hassle and I can recommend to others.

I personally use rsnapshot [1] to backup my /var/mail folder which is
846MB, I have been backing it up for 6 months using rsnapshot and that
weighs in at 1.6GB a cost I consider worthwhile.

Then, how do I restore this to a clean install of Dovecot?

Throw the directory structure back in at /var/mail and set up the
configuration again.

Thanks - so basically there is no magic to Dovecot other than the
configuration file?

How does Dovecot know which mail belongs in which folders? Is this
metadata stored in the /var/mail/username file?

(I'm using Sendmail, if it matters)

2008-05-16 Thread Pete Stean
Popey, thanks for the opportunity to contribute. My question is this:

With Hardy being very solid now, and the kernel being very good in
terms of hardware support, isn't it time that there was a focus on
Ubuntu's look and feel, both in terms of theme and usability issues.
Being mindful of the fact that the forthcoming artwork refresh seems
to have been shelved indefinitely (clarification on this issue would
be welcome) a visual makeover is definitely long overdue IMHO...

It's not simply eight bits per byte for ethernet packets, it's more
complicated than that and you're not taking into account collisions.

Im a bit confused now...

so how...

I mean

a Byte is 8 bits, a bit being either 1 or 0... I thought that was a
fundemental of computer science.

Am I wrong?

In a typical technical response, yes and not.

There are 8 bits in a byte (well an 8 bit byte anyway), an ethernet
packet usually* holds 1500 bytes.
However, the packet has to know where it's going, so that uses some
extra data, and where it's come from, and have a checksum, to it can
tell if it's been corrupted in transit. Then there is the problem that
networks aren't perfect and problems (collisions) do occur, and packets
need to retransmitted, a packet retransmitted is a packet lost...

So while a 100 MEGA Bit/Second link can in theory send 12.5 Mega
bytes/Sec, in practice you lose up to 30% of the throughput in
overheads. So you're looking at around 9 MegaBytes/sec. With poor wiring
and non-switching hubs you can lose even more...

Wireless network lose even more of the headline rate, as the bandwidth
shared among the clients...

It gets very complicated very quickly, but if you are interested, have a
google for the ISO 7 Layer model... :)
