I'm not sure which processes these PIDs belong to, I tried doing a 'sudo ps -ef
| grep {pid}' on them to see, but I didn't find any processes with PIDs matching
those in the logs.

The problem I had is that when I turn on the computer, GDM restarts once (but
only once) and then works fine, which is why I found it a bit strange as most
problems I've had with GDM so far cause either infinite restarts or a lack of
starting at all.

It's worth noting that while it almost always restarts once before working, it
doesn't do it absolutely every time. The reason I think that the client
rejections are probably important is that they are the only difference I can
find between the logs where GDM restarts and those where it does not.

Thanks for the help,

Matt

Matthew,

Sorry, I don't remember reading your original message so I'm not
familiar with the exact problem you're experiencing. Those messages are
generic messages that the X server prints when it stops a client from
connecting to it (for example, it might not be authorised to connect).
"6826" is the PID of the Xorg process, and the last pid in each message
is the PID of the client that was rejected. Do you know what process
these PID's belong too?

Regards
Chris

[ubuntu-uk] Strange GDM Problem

2008-11-25 Thread Matthew Gadd
Dunno if anyone got my previous post about a strange problem with GDM, or if
it's just that no-one has any idea how to fix it. Anyway, I've tried a few
things to see if they make a difference.

I tried changing the theme of GDM (you never know) and disabling and reenabling
automatic login (I use it as there's only me on the laptop and I have disk
encryption anyway, so it already needs a password to boot). I tried reinstalling
the nvidia drivers, as this was mentioned on the internet, which also had no
effect.

Does anybody have any idea what the 'clients' may be in the error I get (snippet
from a /var/log/gdm log) below?

AUDIT: Tue Nov 25 22:10:29 2008: 6826 X: client 4 rejected from local host (
uid=0 gid=0 pid=6862 )
AUDIT: Tue Nov 25 22:10:30 2008: 6826 X: client 4 rejected from local host (
uid=0 gid=0 pid=6862 )
AUDIT: Tue Nov 25 22:10:35 2008: 6826 X: client 4 rejected from local host (
uid=1000 gid=1000 pid=6871 )
AUDIT: Tue Nov 25 22:10:35 2008: 6826 X: client 4 rejected from local host (
uid=1000 gid=1000 pid=6872 )
AUDIT: Tue Nov 25 22:10:35 2008: 6826 X: client 4 rejected from local host (
uid=1000 gid=1000 pid=6873 )

By the way, 1000 is the uid of my normal user, if that helps to explain it.

[ubuntu-uk] Funambol Windows Pocket PC Client

2008-11-25 Thread Rob Beard
Hi folks,

Might be a long shot this but I thought I'd ask anyway...

I'm in the process of moving a local company from Office/Outlook/Outlook
Express to OpenOffice.org & Thunderbird with a central server running
SME Server (can't remember if I posted about it before, I'm still
finishing off the loose ends).

Now I've got Thunderbird & Lightning working and talking to eGroupware
perfectly so it will sync Calendars and Contacts but the MD has got a
HTC Touch phone which runs Windows Mobile.

Now I managed to configure her mail fine, this works rather well but she
also wants to be able to sync her calendar too.

Now I found that Funambol have a Windows Mobile client for such a thing
although I can't seem to get it to connect. I have a feeling it's
possibly to do with the self signed certificate on the server.

I wondered if anyone has any experience of the Funambol client on a
Windows Mobile phone at all and if it is possible to ignore the
certificate error at all? (I seem to have got it to ignore the error on
both Outlook and Thunderbird).

This is the final thing that is keeping them on Windows. Once I crack
this I'll be able to then suggest moving from the mixture of Windows XP
Home and Windows XP Pro to Ubuntu Hardy.

Ta,

Rob

Hi Rob,

I personally don't recommend the Brooktree Bt848/Bt878 chipset, unless
cost is a major factor. This chipset is as old as the hills, and as you
say has really good support in Linux. However, it is a framegrabber
card - which means that it uses CPU cycles to convert it to MPEG. The
Hauppauge PVR 250/350 cards include an onboard hardware MPEG encoder,
and therefore just dumping to disk.

DVB cards get this feature 'for free' because DVB is received as MPEG,
so the cards only need to tune the the MPEG stream. It is worth noting
that the new Freesat should require "DVB-S S2" cards, however I am a
complete noob to Freesat - Hoping to get it before xmas.

Kind Regards,
Dave Walker
