Oh dear, Its my pc, I think I'm having the same problems I was having
with the laptop, and the only way I fixed that was totally reformatting
the harddrive and partitioning. I'm running Ubuntu on Wubi, its the
first installation of Wubi that I had years ago. In an update a couple
of weeks ago, all my flash stopped working.

I dont get anything happening, it just freezes, the same as my laptop. I
cant get any online photo sharing application to work. Its really
frustrating.

I would do the same to this pc, but cant afford to get a hard drive to
copy what I need, to reformat.

I shall just have to use Windows methinks.

One good thing though, I am about to use Ubuntu-One for the first time
to transfer a load of pics I took today, onto my Netbook.

I have tried everything I can think of, as far as the Flash thing goes,
but I have a feeling its not going to work. It seems a bain of my life
this flash problem, its happened on all my computers. g.

I was going to say the same thing... there's nothing to stop you using
Photobucket at least in Linux (no idea of the other)... it's browser-based,

what does it say or what is are the symptoms?

Their whole website is actually very destructive; the implication being that
Linux is not accessible to Windows users which is simply not true.

I think it's actually rather patronising to suggest that Windows users are
incapable of embracing minor differences in an operating system - Apple
doesn't try to do it, they're quite happy to try to lure Windows users away
from Microsoft with something that is so different from everything else that
even I (as an IT person of many years) finds it completely unintuitive. But
it seems that folks who "go to Mac" seldom go back, so clearly differences
in interface aren't as important to people as clearly these Israeli folks
think they are.

I believe it's important to promote the packages that are there on their
merits, not market them as "cheap versions of your favourite Windows
applications".

Openoffice has many advantages over Microsoft Office.

GIMP is an excellent graphics tool.

Evolution and Thunderbird are both great e-mail clients.

Surely when people say "a free office suite that does pretty much everything
that Microsoft Office does" isn't that deriding the product you're trying to
"sell"? Or describe Evolution as a product that does pretty much what
Outlook does?

They're not promoting Linux -- they're promoting Microsoft, by suggesting in
every word they write that what people should aspire to is Microsoft's
products, and this is just a way to save some money.

Talk about deriding your product.

Apple don't do that. They don't say their applications are compatible with
Microsoft, because they realise that things don't have to be.

That's "so 1990s" ;-)

I'd have thought that you need to run the NVidia tool as root. I can't
remember exactly what the command is called, I think it's something like
nvidia-settings. Try opening a terminal and typing:

sudo nvidia-settings

Hopefully with any luck it should be the correct program, when you try
and save the xorg.conf file it should either save successfully or give
you some diagnostic messages in the terminal window (for example
possibly a message to say that it can't access the file).

Looks interesting. I was round at a friend of a friend fixing their
windows pc, was going to install Ubuntu but didnb quite understand
what i was going to do so I left it. Wishing I had now - spent 3 hours
installing .net frameworks remotely! Took forever...

Depending what happens with the rest of the updates i might well
suggest this to them.

Thanks for the heads up.

NoYes

If I click on Yes, it takes me to the NVIDIA X Server Settings dialog. I
can choose the right resolution from that, but next time I boot the
resolution is reset back to 1280 x 1024. There is an option to save to

2009-06-17 Thread David King
An Israeli company has put together a version of Linux based on Ubuntu
and that looks and acts more like Windows, which could be a good way of
getting Windows users to switch. It can also switch to a Mac-like
interface with a simple mouse click or two.

http://www.affordy.com/

However, if you download it, it is a trial version that runs 16 times
only, then you have to pay for it.

But I do like the concept, and the way it can perhaps convert some
Windows users who do not want to lose their interface but want something
faster and more reliable, and free from viruses.

On the downside, currently the link to their online shop only goes to
the shop site main page, which is all in Hebrew.
 http://shop.affordy.com/pl_product~TITANLEV-ENG~2~0.htm

There is a link at the bottom of the page to the English site, which is
at http://shop.affordy.com/?lang=en and it has the Titan Lev linux
distro for sale for only $25.

I am going to try out the trial version in VirtualBox and see what it is
like. If you have friends who are Windows users, you might want to tell
them that they can upgrade to a modern Vista-like OS for just $25 and be
free from viruses. The Titan Lev distro as supplied also has support for
Windows software like MS Office, probably through Wine.

2009-06-17 Thread David King
I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04. When it boots and I log in, I get a
very large screen resolution which makes everything too small. I think
it is 1280 x something. I want it set to 1152 x 864, and every time
after logging in I have to access the Nvidia settings to change the
resolution. If I disable the Nvidia driver, then Ubuntu starts at the
correct screen resolution.

The monitor is an old CRT screen, 41 cm viewable diagonal size. 1152 x
864 seems to work best, anything bigger is no good.

So how do I get Ubuntu to remember my choice of resolution for the next
time I boot?

Re: [ubuntu-uk] wacom bamboo

2009-06-17 Thread mac
norman wrote:
> # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)

Yes, your old xorg.conf has got all the normal wacom stuff commented out
(but it looks as though it never had the 'pad' section that makes the
circular pad work).

In 8.04, my xorg.conf has these four wacom sections near the top:

Section "InputDevice"
   Driver"wacom"
   Identifier"stylus"
   Option"Device""/dev/input/wacom"
   Option"Type" "stylus"
# Option"ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY
# Option"USB" "on" # USB ONLY
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
   Driver"wacom"
   Identifier"eraser"
   Option"Device""/dev/input/wacom"
   Option"Type" "eraser"
# Option"ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY
# Option"USB" "on" # USB ONLY
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
   Driver"wacom"
   Identifier"cursor"
   Option"Device""/dev/input/wacom"
   Option"Type" "cursor"
# Option"ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY
# Option"USB" "on" # USB ONLY
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
   Driver"wacom"
   Identifier"pad"
   Option"Device""/dev/input/wacom"
   Option"Type" "pad"
# Option"USB" "on" # USB ONLY
EndSection

But in order to work, it has to have the wacom in the ServerLayout
section *at the end* of the file, thus:

Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "Default Layout"
   screen "Default Screen"
   InputDevice "stylus" "SendCoreEvents"
   InputDevice "eraser" "SendCoreEvents"
InputDevice "cursor" "SendCoreEvents" # For non-LCD tablets only
   InputDevice "pad" # For
Intuos3/CintiqV5/Graphire4/Bamboo tablets
# InputDevice "touch" "SendCoreEvents" # Only a few TabletPCs
support this type
EndSection

However, this is a problem in Jaunty, which - as the comments in your
old xorg.conf file show - is now using HAL instead of the xorg.conf
method.

You'll have seen that says,

"Of course, it is always possible to revert to the old configuration
method with /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but you will loose hotplugging support"

but when, on my Jaunty machine, I added the ServerLayout section, X
wouldn't start at all , and the boot process popped my out into a
text-based login, from where I was able to restore may backed-up
original xorg.conf (don't forgt to do a backup before you change anything!).

In fact, the proper method for Jaunty appears to be to use a cusotm .fdi
in /etc/hal/fdi/policy/, as the Ubuntu Community HowTo above indicates.

But... but... I was trying to install much newer hardware, with a
linuxwacom driver that may not be playing nicely with the Jaunty kernel.
You're using hardware for which the driver does seem OK. I suggest
you create a backup of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, then add (or edit in)
the four wacom sections, add the ServerLayout section at the end, and
reboot. If X fails to start, you can always use the command line to

sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf

(I am assuming here that you've got the right driver and kernel module
installed. But as I think you said the stylus was working, I guess you
must have.)

HTH

(and let us know how you get on!)

Can I be cheeky and say I would like one too. Joined the list not long
after it was mentioned. Can somebody invite me? Can use my e-mail
address that I use for this list.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] wacom bamboo

2009-06-17 Thread Daniel Drummond
Most configuration is now done for x.org with hal, which is why a lot of
the options in your old x.org config file have been commented out. Look
in /etc/hal/fdi/policy to see if there are any files relating to the
wacom tablet. It may be named 10-linuxwacom.fdi, or something similar.

If not run the following command:

sudo cp /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/20thirdparty/10-linuxwacom.fdi
/etc/hal/fdi/policy

This will copy a file which you can then edit to change different
options for the wacom configuration.

hal will need to be restarted before you will notice anything. The most
foolproof way of doing this is by rebooting your computer.

Let us know if this helps anything.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] wacom bamboo

2009-06-17 Thread norman
I am beginning to feel that I am going round in ever decreasing circles
and I am getting worried that I might disappear. I have 2 desktop
machines both running Ubuntu 9.04 one of which is relatively new and the
other which has been running Ubuntu from the day Ubuntu started.
xorg.conf on the old machine has lots of stuff in it including some
references to Wacom which are commented out. On the new machine there
are very few entries in xorg.conf and no reference at all to Wacom. On
neither machine does the circular pad work.

I must be missing something which will be perfectly obvious to you
knowledgeable ones and I would welcome advice on how to proceed.

Norman

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Installing Safari on Ubuntu

2009-06-17 Thread John
Yay, well I hate giving up. I decided to try once more, and as I had my
Maclin folder on the Desktop and trying to install it from there, I
decided to transfer it to a Downloads folder and try again. It worked
that time. I have no idea why it wouldnt recognise it on the Desktop,
but it is now installed.

The only problem is now, I am trying to add a root application launcher
to the top bar, but when I try clicking on it it says Nautilus doesnt
exist. But I have nautilus open. It worked ok on my Netbook. Would
anybody know why Nautilus wont open?

Well, I decided to remove it from the system. I like it, but until I get
used to Ubuntu more, I will keep it stored then install it some other
time. It looks good though. I'm glad that I found it.

Thanks everybody.
