Hello, Andy.

Oops! I install "ubuntu-desktop" + "linux-server", not "ubuntu-server":

There was discussion about an "ubuntu-server" metapackage, but it never
made it into the repositories as an official package...

No idea: I'm still running 6.06 LTS on some of our servers, and I was
worried about the recent EOL statement for Dapper on the desktop. I now
just install the desktop edition from CDROM, then add what I need:

aptitude install linux-server openssh-server
aptitude install mysql-server apache2 libapache2-mod-php5
aptitude install nfs-kernel-server

Boot the server kernel, and I've got a LAMP + NFS server + GUI.

Bye,

   Tony.

It was pointed out that this was perhaps best asked on the
ubuntu-server list, so I have:

I presume that everything on the Server CD image is supported.

Will this package need to be installed to maintain support on hardy after

I'm guessing that things like Firefox, Xorg and other such things that
you generally wouldn't have on a server would be supported until 2011,
whereas I guess things like bind, openssh-server, samba, mysql and
things that you would generally find on a server would be supported
until 2013.

Could be wrong though.

Hello, Andy.

I run Ubuntu 'server' by installing from the 'desktop' CD, followed by:

   aptitude install ubuntu-server

The only real difference is the kernel you run and if you want LAMP.

There is a list of the 'server' packages that will still be supported:

   http://people.canonical.com/~ubuntu-security/dapper/supported.txt

On a related note, can someone tell me officially what defines an
install of Ubuntu Server? I ask because this page:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

says that 8.04 LTS has an EOL date in 2011 for desktop or 2013 for
server.

Assuming I installed it from debootstrap or similar pointing at
hardy repositories, does that make it a server?

IBM used to make a mouse with a joystick instead of a scroll-wheel.
Based on the same technology as their track-points pointers on
thinkpads it sounded like a great idea... however I have used them and
prefer a scroll wheel...

Don't show this thing to Steve Jobs. It may well finish him off.

Seriously, though, I thought this was what keyboard shortcuts were
for? Surely if I'm typing I don't want to move my hand to the mouse to
press a button just to make some text bold?

Though having said that I love the idea of a built-in joystick.
Scrolling, for example, would be much easier with that, whether in a
document, webpage or in an RTS.

If you go to the podcast page, eg
http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/fricomedy , the MP3 download link
is the green box about halfway down on the lefthand side.

Where ? I can't find them. I'm interested in stuff on Radio 7 and Radio 4.
The best I can find on R4 is their 'Podcasts' page and they don't have
