Re: [ubuntu-uk] NVIDIA X Server Settings
I have tried all sorts, including the suggestions in the parallel thread. I have been able to save an xorg.config file with the correct settings and yet Ubuntu still boots up in 800x600 resolution. Strangley enough, however, as it is booting with the chocolate screen the resolution is correct. then shortly after I sign in the screen blanks for a second or so then changes to 800x600. Strange! [ubuntu-uk] [OT] Hackerspace in South Wales
Hi all, I'm looking into starting a hackerspace in South East Wales (Newport/Monmouthshire area) and thought I'd see if anyone here was in the area and/or interested. I realise that there are hackerspaces in Birmingham (1hr 1/2 away) and Bristol (45 minutes and £££'s for the bridge away), however I can't travel easily to either of those places so thought I'd start my own! [ubuntu-uk] Manchester Global Jam - Lucid Lynx 10.04 - Call to arms
Hi All :) So the Manchester global jam is tentatively planned for the weekend of 26th - 28th March 2010 at Madlab Manchester, 36-40 Edge Street (Northern Quarter) - see the wiki page for more info - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/ManchesterJam10-04 Madlib has plenty of space so don't hesitate to invite as many people as you want and of course, everyone is welcome, no matter what your level of expertise is :) What we are really interested in planning now is the general outline of the jam, Does anyone have expertise in translations/bugs/testing/packaging/documentation writing/advocacy or anything else, that could possibly do a small presentation to get the rest of the people up to speed? does anyone want to make a presentation about anything else? Also if there is anything you would like to ask or bring up, now would be the time/place. -- Gordon Allott Canonical signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

[ubuntu-uk] Xorg screen error
Hello guys, On my net book last week I connected a pair of vuzix glasses to see if view worked out of box with ubuntu. They worked fine, however when I unplugged them I lost my main screen so restarted the net book. And got a x error saying no screen so I reconfigured my conf file, to no avail. I've plugged back in the glasses and even this doesn't give an output. Live cd is working, anyone got any ideas on how to fix this. [ubuntu-uk] NVIDIA X Server Settings
A couple of months ago I treated myself to an All-in-One PC with a large touchscreen monitor. I couldn't use Ubuntu on it because it has a Realtek wireless card which Ubuntu doesn't recognise and, as far as I can tell, nobody has been able to get around this. Also, as the PC's OS is Windows 7, wubi won't install either. Over the weekend, however, I had the bright idea of using a TP-Link wireless dongle. This works a treat and now I have 9.10 up and running /almost/ perfectly. There is one fly in the ointment, though, and that is the display. Ubuntu defaults to 800x600 every time I boot up. Naturally I reset the display to the monitor's preferred mode, 1920x1080 but on trying to save this setting I receive the error message "Failed to parse existing X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf'!". I wonder if anyone can advise me how I can save the configuration permanently. Ahh, problem is, it won't fit on the 300GB drive. dd will copy everything on the drive regardless of if there is data there or not. You'd need a 400GB or larger hard drive, ideally possibly larger unless it's an identical model drive (I've found in the past that some drives from different manufacturers despite being listed as the same size, they can be slightly different in capacity). If you're really stuck you could possibly use gzip to create a backup image of the drive to your 300GB drive... dd if=/dev/sda | gzip -9 > /media/harddrive/backup.img.gz where /media/harddrive is the location of where the 300GB drive is mounted, if you mount it from Gnome then it's likely to be mounted on a folder in /media To be honest though if you can afford it, you could well be worth getting another drive to back it up on to just in case. The output of your fdisk -l command shows that there are no partitions on /dev/sda so you can't mount it anyway. I'm not sure of the applications you'll need, but follow the advice of previous posters: Boot from a LIVE CD and then install the system tools you need to try and repair the disk.
