I did rather like RedHat manuals... they summed up how Linux operated so
well, especially Red Hat 9 who produced a wonderful manual...

Key is that you don't pay for the operating system, you pay for value added
services... and that's manuals, support, CD/DVDs or whatever.

That's the way to make a living from selling GPL software, although
it's also important to note that there's nothing in the GPL to prevent
someone charging just for the operating system.

I've not changed the database or the application in any way. All I can

Has anybody else suffered a similar problem and/or have any ideas as to a

On my Macbook, since the most recent OpenOffice upgrade, it complains about
having an incompatible or out of date version of Java before starting up. I
wonder if that's the case in Linux. You could try starting it from the
command line (ooffice if memory serves) and see if it complains at all.

Very true, I've noticed that Windows users are very wary of 'free
downloads' - for this reason we distribute FOSS apps and Ubuntu
installation images on CDs or pre-loaded USB sticks to our end users. We
hand these out free at events but charge for mail-order CDs and always
for USB sticks as these are seriously too expensive to give away.

To hand out a few dozen CDs at an event means that a couple of
volunteers have to spend an afternoon feeding CDs into a row of laptops
(we can't afford a pro burner - one of the Councils for Voluntary
Service offered to buy Fossbox one but the cuts kiboshed that), plus the
cost of the CDs, covers and labelling. We're a small non-profit, I can't
really cost per CD accurately, so we charge three quid per CD send out
in an SAE - people are happy to pay it because they don't trust their
own ability to get the right stuff by going online. We don't make a
profit on it, any money we make just goes towards keeping the non-profit
organisation going - if it were a purely commercial decision, I wouldn't
bother, not worth it.

There's no restriction on charging for CDs, and we've talked about
asking for people to contribute to refreshments at our free sessions too
- same thing, in my view.

2010-12-10 Thread Nigel Verity

Hi

In response to Paul Sladen's enquiry, both my laptops run Xubuntu. One is on
10.04 and the other is running 10.10.

On both I run OOO 3.2.1 from the OOO mirror rather than the Ubuntu repository.
However, by way of experiment, I also downloaded the Go-OO version from the
repository, but it made no difference. When the problem first appeared I was
interfacing with MySQL using Connector/J 5.1.12. I upgraded to the latest
5.1.14, but also to no avail.

Because the slow performance has also manifested itself using embedded HSQL
tables, I am pretty certain that the problem doesn't lie with the MySQL side of
things; MySQL DB Browser is working just as quickly as usual.

[ubuntu-uk] connecting to secure network in University

2010-12-10 Thread Graham Smith
Hello,

There has been a change in the security at the University I work at, and
where as before I could connect to the wireless network by simply typing in
password and username (which I can still do with my Macbook Pro) connecting
with Ubuntu 10.10 is defeating me. The netbook is finding
and identifying the wireless network OK.

Selecting the network gives a pop up dialog and filling in the connection
settings (as best I can) simply allows the connection details box to
disappear and then re-appear a few seconds later.

There are instructions available for Nokia S60 phones and Windows (but none
for Linux).

Taking the settings from the windows instructions, I have the following set
up as a network connection

Wireless tab:

SSID: the network name
Mode: infrastructure
BSSID: blank
MAC address: left blank
MTU: automatic

Wireless security:
Security: WPA WPA2 Enterprise
Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
Anonymous identity: left blank
CA Certificate: None (but windows instructions tell you to search for
certficate and authenticate it, The Mac does this automatically)
PEAP version: automatic
inner authentication: MSCHAPv2
username; my username
password: my password

IPv4 settings:
Automatic DHCP

IPv6 settings:
ignore

The instruction for windows says to select WPA2, PEAP, uncheck authenticate
as computer when computer information is available, uncheck fast reconnect,
configure secure password (EAP-MSCHAPv2) to either domain account or local
account, and to validate server certificate.

I have been telling Ubuntu to ignore the certificate request, which from
what I have read should still work.

I would be very grateful if anyone can suggest what I should be trying to
get connected.

Many thanks,

Graham

The *massive campaign of intimidation* against WikiLeaks is sending a

government and corporate attack, but WikiLeaks is only publishing
information provided by a whistleblower. And *it has partnered with the
world's leading newspapers (NYT, Guardian, Spiegel etc)* to carefully vet
 the information it publishes.

*The massive extra-judicial intimidation of WikiLeaks is an attack on

*WikiLeaks isn't acting alone* -- it's partnered with the top newspapers
in the world (New York Times, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, etc) to carefully
review 250,000 US diplomatic cables and remove any information that it is
irresponsible to publish. *Only 800 cables have been published so far.*Past
WikiLeaks publications have exposed government-backed torture, the
murder of innocent civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, and corporate
 corruption.

The US government is currently pursuing all legal avenues to stop WikiLeaks
from publishing more cables, but *the laws of democracies protect freedom
of the press.* The US and other governments may not like the laws that
protect our freedom of expression, but that's exactly why it's so important
that we have them, and why only a democratic process can change them.

*Reasonable people can disagree* on whether WikiLeaks and the leading
newspapers it's partnered with are releasing more information than the
public should see. Whether the releases undermine diplomatic confidentiality
and whether that's a good thing. Whether WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange
has the personal character of a hero or a villain. *But none of this
justifies a vicious campaign of intimidation to silence a legal media outlet
 * by governments and corporations. Click below to join the call to stop
 the crackdown:

 http://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?vlhttp://www.avaaz.org/en/wikileaks_petition/?cl=855181424v=7744

Ever wonder why the media so rarely gives the full story of what happens
behind the scenes? This is why - because when they do, governments can be
vicious in their response. And when that happens, *it's up to the public
to stand up for our democratic rights to a free press and freedom of
expression. Never has there been a more vital time for us to do so.*

[ubuntu-uk] connecting to secure network in University

2010-12-10 Thread Patrick Bulteel
Hi Graham,

there's a bug logged for this against Network Manager:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=632184

I believe this is the same issue you're encountering and in fact it's the
issue that I have with my company's WiFi and certificates. The same
certificate is used for 802.1X on the wired network and this works, but it
doesn't work on the WiFi which uses WPA/WPA2 Enterprise. I hadn't been
digging deeper into this until a few days ago. It seems that it partially
depends on the network driver as a colleague with a different wifi card is
able to get on the network, but I'm not. I'm trying to gather as much
information to see if I can get the developers fix it.

It didn't happen on 10.04 base install, up to about a week or two before
10.10 was out, so you could try using a 10.04 installation and see if it
works for you.

Kind regards,

Patrick Bulteel

Hi Graham,

Are you by any chance trying to connect to an eduroam network? If so,
you may find the instructions at this Cambridge university website
helpful:
http://www.cam.ac.uk/cs/wireless/eduroam/configuring-ubuntu10.04.html

If so, the certificate you need is located in
/etc/ssl/certs/AddTrust_External_Root.pem

This worked for me at Cambridge, but I'm not sure whether the same
certificates are used at all universities with eduroam. Anyone know the
answer to that?

Kind regards,
