[ubuntu-uk] Schools

2011-07-10 Thread Phill Whiteside
hiyas,

sorry I have not been to active of late, life is a little hectic. but I do
recall a discussion about the software schools use.

In america or canada they can use
http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/edu/index.html which is a pretty awesome
suite of apps. The only problem being it is not available to UK.

Well, after much digging, it may well be :)

(02:17:59) d.W.b: I have some good news for your friend Daniel from Austria
(02:18:53) PhillW: good news would be nice :) Been one of those sort of days
:/
(02:19:02) d.W.b: Oh boy :-(
(02:20:28) d.W.b: Well, I found out about that school. They can apply for a
Google App Edu edition. All they need to do is file a 504(c)55.3-Edu with
the Department of Education and thus able to apply for the Google App Edu
:-)
(02:20:40) d.W.b: A little loophole... due to student exchange programs :-P
(02:21:06) d.W.b: The filing fee is free
(02:21:29) PhillW: I do so love it when a plan comes together. Thank you
ever so much for finding that out
(02:21:38) d.W.b: You have Jay to think for this... he was using the laptop
when he discovered the loophole
(02:21:43) d.W.b: thank*
(02:22:03) PhillW: I'll thank him.
(02:23:23) d.W.b: We were both talking about it and he brought up that a lot
of colleges in other nations are able to get the .edu TLD. I asked how it
was possible as .mil .gov and .edu are for US only. He told me if it's
US-based-registered they can bypass it
(02:24:00) d.W.b: Thus he discovered the school could also apply for US
status since we accept Austrians as student exchange.

If anyone wishes me to pursue this for a UK school / college etc., I would
be happy to do so.

As for Jay, well he is top of class at his University averaging 97% on
exams. Two of the 'upstream' teams are now going to be using
http://phpwebsite.appstate.edu/ from a different university, there does seem
to be a F/OSS option available for schools.

Regards,

Phill.

Would it not be best to eat first? I don't particularly want to
carry food around the library, and they routinely do bag checks (not
that I'm suggesting that they will prevent us going in with food,
just that it will be a hassle to have to empty bags full of food).

Cheers,
Andy

[ubuntu-uk] Next meeting Saturday 23rd 9PM

2011-07-10 Thread Alan Bell

Hi all,

just to mix things up a bit I have scheduled the next meeting for
Saturday 23rd July, the day before the Geeknic at the Library so we can
go over any last minute adjustments and clarifications to the plan. Also
we can decide whether we are ready to put the team forward for
reapproval on I think the 27th.

[ubuntu-uk] 14 sleeps to the geeknic and the British Library SciFi exhibition 11am 24th July

2011-07-10 Thread Alan Bell

http://loco.ubuntu.com/events/ubuntu-uk/1032/detail/

looks like we have somewhere between 13 and 19 people coming so far. The
plan is to meet at the British Library entrance at 11:00 on Sunday 24th
July, wonder round the exhibition http://www.bl.uk/sciencefiction and
having had our cultural experience for the day to go somewhere and eat
food that we will bring with us.

http://www.bl.uk/whatson/planyourvisit/openinghours/index.html

It isn't a particularly complex plan so I think we can make it work.
Please note that the event was set up with a time of 10:00 and I just
updated it to 11:00 because the library opens at 11 on Sunday.

That sounds reasonable for a social networking site. What constitutes
a 'public profile'?

Well, rather they set the rules *now* so that people know what they're
getting into than fall into Facebook's trap of getting told off every

improve the Group/Our Lives/whatever. Diaspora contunues to be a bit of a
damp squib :(

Google+ is very underwhelming at the moment, all I have managed to do so far
is spam people in my address book (only one mail, but to a lot of people!).

You're going to get a flood of people asking for invites now. ;)

(me included! :D )

Done. Email inbound

Apparently the method of starting a circle and adding people via email
works when inviting doesn't.

I suspect you could be correct there. I needed to add you to a circle,
then view your profile, and then "Send and Invite".

Any chance of an invite?

Strange, I was invited on Friday evening - straight in.

Since then I've invited 4 others - they are all straight in too, as they are
all now signed up.

Sent you an invite anyway Jason - ignore it if you already have one.
